My friend and I had the best day ever! We're both retired and looking for new adventures. This was our first time doing this so, we didn't know what to expect. We chose to arrive early so to ensure we weren't late. Before leaving the starting point, we were provided clear instructions from the kind staff members, also, they answered any in all of our questions allowing us to choose one of the available bikes on the track. One of us were responsible for handling the electric speed when we weren't pedaling, I believe it was just a lever or a push button, not too fast and not too slow of a speed but just right. This was great to utilize when we needed a break from pedaling, hee. There was also a break lever between us to slow down or stop if needed, great safety option. Each bike was provided one keepsake River Fox backpack that had two waters and a snack for each of us to partake in afterwards, how thoughtful. We took a beautiful ride through a countryside setting. Reaching our turnaround point allowing us to disembark for like under 10 minutes, at this point, you could sip on the provided water or take a bite of the snack provided while the kind staff easily maneuvering each railbikes, turning them back around. My Sister and I loved the Rail Bikes. It was so much fun to peddle on the railroad tracks and have the lights flash and stop traffic when we crossed the street. Toot toot! If you get tired you can switch over to an electric motor and sit back and enjoy. The scenery is beautiful and they provided a bag with a bottle of water, granola bar, Sun Chips and a sticker! So cute and top notch! The rail bikes are located in a cute little "town" and everyone there was polite and helpful. Highly recommend and I will do it again if I am in the area. My only complain is having better information re: timing of the activity. We were asked to arrive 30 mins early but our safety info didn't start until 10 mins past our tour time. We were in Sacramento the end of September to do the River Fox Railbikes, and the day was beautiful. We checked in down at the old fashioned little town area in the barn. At our reservation time, our guides gave a presentation and we walked up to the bikes where there were helmets for those who didn't have their own. We were given another presentation on how the bikes worked, we climbed on and the employees came around to adjust the seats if need be. We were off on the adventure. Others have said they had to pedal a lot as their batteries were dying, which happened to a few, but ours was just fine. We did pedal and occasionally used the assist. The scenery starts next to the river and then enters farmland were we saw fields filled with tomatoes, watermelon, and squash. The sunflower fields had already died off. Once you get going, the rail bikes all space out so you aren't on top of each other. You go out and then stop at the end of the tracks for the guides to turn the bikes around. You have time to take pictures and stretch your legs. Back on the rail bikes we had new views as we were seated on the opposite side. There were wild turkeys roaming about. We had a ball. The entire experience lasted about an hour and a half, and round trip is a little over 10 miles. Parking is easy, they have a dirt lot. Doing this as a couple is a fun date day experience, or with a group of friends to celebrate a birthday would be a blast too. read more

Since moving to Sacramento a few months ago, we've taken our friends and family to this three times! It's a great outing and in the scheme of rail bikes, on the more affordable side (but still pricey, no doubt!) the folks who work here are fun, and we've always had a great time with them. Sacramento is gorgeous and has different seasons so every time we've gone, it's been a different experience/view. I'd say fall and spring are definitely the nicest but the whole trip is fun enough even when not during those times. The trail takes you along the river and past farms, and you even get to be a train at some point (they do a whole train crossing and everything). They give you water and snacks (chips) which are nice to chomp on and then at the end you get to watch them turn around the bikes to bike on back. It's a great way to see the countryside and definitely worth it!! It's good for folks of all athletic ability since they're electric so you could not bike at all and that's fine as well. Pro tip: the left seat doesn't have to do any work to help the bike get going, so if you can't really do much athletics, do that seat! read more

Last month we rode their beer train. This month it was the rail bikes. The bikes were fun. Pedaling was not even needed as you could use the throttle the whole way. Only one set of pedals actually affected the speed. The view was of orchards and empty fields. The whole trip was about an hour and a half. read more

I came here early one morning for a date, and was very excited to try out rail bikes for the first time! The check-in spot was pretty quiet at the time, which I didn't expect (most people come and go as soon as their sessions end). The space looked like a barn themed kid's area, but we had some free time to look around before starting. The directions and safety training were clear and concise, making it easy to understand the signals and how to operate the railbike. The staff was great--they double-checked our seat belts and the rail bike itself, and they were very accommodating with any questions or clarifications we had. You do have to wear a helmet, so if you bring a cap, they'll ask you to remove it. Luckily, there's a little basket in the front where you can store it. If you plan on bringing one, I'd recommend strapping it in so it doesn't fall off or fly away. They also gave us a drink and some snacks, which was a nice touch, but we didn't end up eating them during the activity. Once we took off, it was like all the problems in the world just melted away. The ride was fun and peaceful at the same time, with beautiful views of the West Sacramento fields in the background as you pedal. Since we went in the early morning during the summer, it did start to get a bit hot, but nothing unbearable. Because they don't allow hats over helmets, I'd suggest bringing sunglasses, applying sunscreen, and booking a morning session. This experience is more for the couples or a double date activity as there are only two seats that sits people side by side. We had a wonderful time (just over an hour) and this was one of the highlights of my summer! read more

Back on July 10th, 2020, wifey and I decided to try the Rail Bike experience of West Sac! I think the first thing that stands out is that we had to wear masks (outside) on the bikes during this time. Was it during the pandemic? Yes. Was it for safety? I guess. Ugh Also, I don't know exactly what we were expecting per se, but you most definitely have to pedal. This is not a sit and lounge experience. In fact, our little accelerator feature to assist with incline or speed kept going out and the staff informed us towards the end that they only had 1 left to swap out or basically we'd be doing way MORE pedaling. I feel like this experience was a spin class in leg day for a month. Was it fun? Sure. Was it hot in the middle of summer? F Yes! Would I do it again? Debatable. If those reading this review are looking for a unique, scenic date day idea, then check it out. Just make sure you are in decent shape to get your bike push on. I was searching for fun activities that were out of the ordinary to do with my boyfriend and came across River Fox Train in Sacramento. We arrived half an hour early, as per instruction, to a train station that was cutely decorated with a fake saloon and a gift shop. The courtyard area had jumbo jenga and connect four as well as plenty of picnic benches. The outdoor courtyard was located directly next to a body of water and it was really a great view. Unfortunately, not everyone decided to follow the half hour rule and showed up pretty close to kick off time and we were required to wait on the rest of the reserved spots., thankfully they had great music playing on loud speakers and complimentary water which made the time fly by quickly. We were escorted up to the train tracks where the bikes were ready to go with helmets on each seat. The throttle and breaks of the bikes were explained to us and we tested them out to ensure they were in good working order. One of the handle bar cushions was missing and you had to be careful of hand placement because your fingers would get squeezed by the other persons handle when you were in motion. The resistance on our bike was flashing dead battery so where seemed to be no change in resistance. The ride is approximately ten miles long and it is not a loop. You get to your half way point and get off the bike and the guide will flip the bike around. All in all, it was beautiful scenery and it was a beautiful July day to go out and enjoy. This most likely be an experience I do every couple of years but it was very enjoyable. Tip: the driver ( the one positioned in the right hand seat) is not allowed to have their cell phone out, so make sure your passenger is the good photographer! read more

What a super fun activity! The people were great! The ride was so much fun! If you are the passenger you have the option of just pedaling for fun or if you want to be the "driver" who's main focus is to either pedal or use the electric motor. You also just get the time to relax and focus on the scenery and talk with your partner. This was such a great experience! One recommendation is to wear gloves and super warm clothing and a hat if doing this in the late fall and winter time. Definitely would recommend and do with a group! Really fun activity to do. Everything was explained really well to keep us safe. It was nice to be outside. Bike has a motor, so don't worry if you just want to relax and enjoy the outdoors. They even give you popcorn and water. If you go during the colder months, bring a jacket. I'm glad I didn't bring my purse down. You don't really have anywhere to put it. We booked a rail bike tour through Groupon. It saved us a bit of money which was great. We have never rail biked before and it was fun! With the motorized pedaling system, you can go fast (we went 42mph at one point) and you can choose to pedal or not. It was fun going through the farmland in Sacramento. Our guides were Ethan and another lady (sorry can't remember your name at the moment) and they were great. It was also a nice touch to have snacks and water on each rail bike. My husband and I rode the rail bikes in early May 2024. We chose the morning ride to avoid the heat, as the rails are almost always in the sun. The staff were competent and conscientious about enforcing safety measures. In waiting for the tour to begin we had wandered a short way away from the meeting place. When we came back to begin the tour, the introduction had already begun. Oops on our part for being out of sight, but we had checked in, so staff knew we were present. There was no effort made to locate us before beginning. The snack bag of water, snack bars, and chips was a good idea and much appreciated, but there was no opportunity to enjoy them once the railbikes were underway. Our bike worked well, with the electric motor allowing us to easily keep up to speed when we were not interested in pedaling. The plastic seats were OK, but the required seatbelts seemed an afterthought. The scenery is beautiful, the Sacramento River and Yolo County farmland. When finished, we felt a bit disappointed. We knew no more about the surrounding land than when we started. We had not been encouraged to interact with others on the tour, with the staff, or with the local flora and fauna. I think this tour would benefit from a narration of the local history, the rails we were riding, and the farms we are passing through. When coming through crossings, the staff should use the correct railroad crossing signal, not just a few random blasts on the airhorn. Possibly a stop along the way or at the turn-around spot would be in order for all riders to meet and greet, chat with the staff, and eat their snacks. We took this tour after seeing the ride featured on Rob on the Road on PBS. We had hoped to be excited enough about this unique experience to return with friends and family in tow. For the reasons stated above and the expense (about $60 per person), we will not be back. read more

This is the first time I took the bike rail tour.It was fantastic.The staff explained the rules and there was conductors before and behind the rail bikes.It was uniquique and a rememberance from 60 years ago back home when we used to take the bike rail ride from hometown to school town. There was no electic throttle in those days but manual people who would run the bike(then called railroad trolleys) but it was fun then and today. It was enjoyable and an exciting experience. My companion had wanted to try for awhile so we finally arranged a time to come by. It is a two seater rail bike but does have an area to put your bags. The staff provide a 15 minute instruction plus another 10 minute check. The ride itself is around 30 minute each way plus a 10 minute to rotate the bike around midway. I came across the River Fox Rail Bikes through a Facebook ad. The ad couldn't have appeared at a better time. I chose to celebrate my anniversary with my husband by checking out the rail bikes and it was fun. The staff were great and very helpful. The ride was fun. You'll come across lots of greenery landscape and it's nothing like doing the rail bikes in Fort Bragg but it's definitely worth checking out in you are local in Sacramento. Rail bikes run Wednesday, Friday, Saturday, and Sundays. We booked the first time slot of 8:00 am, since I wanted to avoid the heat. We were asked to arrive 30 minutes before, but it didn't seem necessary. It only took 5 minutes to sign the waiver, and orientation didn't start until it was 8:00. Maybe it was because they were waiting on stragglers that arrived late. Round trip was about 14 miles and we saw a lot of farmland. I'm glad most parts were shaded. I think 90 minutes wasn't enough time and would've liked a more relaxed pace. If you have short legs like I do, it was a bit difficult to pedal. The price for this activity is $250 (not including taxes and fees), which is outrageous. They are offering a special pricing of 50% off this month for Wednesdays and Fridays, but even then it's expensive. It shouldn't be more than $100. Oh and another thing, a bottled drink and a packaged snack is included- the Doritos I grabbed was past its best by date... :/ Even though it was a unique experience, it's more of a one time thing. read more

I found River Fox Rail bikes online. The website is easy to navigate and has all the details you need to make this a successful trip. I booked the early morning trip. Parking is free. Check in was easy. Your given a waiver form to fill out and make your way to the gift shop. While waiting for the other parties to join you can walk around the area to intake the river views and small pumpkin patch in October. There is a brief orientation for instructions on how to use the rail bike and then is off to an awesome ride. There is motor assist if you get tired. The views of farmland are peaceful. I saw wild Turkey, a falcon and squirrels on this trip. There was quit a bit of fog so warm dress attire is advised. Especially gloves. I definitely would recommend this experience. read more

I took my 11 year old grandson here for a date. I love to ride bikes and sometimes he rides with me. I have never ridden an E-bike before but I imagine this experience was similar. It was easy to make reservations from their website. We were told to be there 30 minutes early so we were there. We had to wait over the 30 minutes before they gave us directions. The good thing was they had activities to keep us entertained. I'm short but was I happy that they could adjust the seat to make us comfortable. Once we got started I was surprised how easy it was to pedal. It was more like spinning instead of taking a bike ride. Maybe that had something to do with the motor assist, even though I wasn't using the manual throttle. We pedaled out 5 miles at about 30 mph. When we got to the end we had to get off so they could turn the cars around. On the ride back our battery died. Then I realized how hard it would be to pedal without the assist. They have a guide at the front and back of the group so we stopped and they quickly changed our battery and we were on our way again. We had fun, it was just a little different than I expected. The view along the river and through the farmlands was pretty. We will probably go again! read more

Having ridden rail bikes previously, I am very excited to have this in the Sacramento area. The rail bikes are new, power assisted and easy to ride. (It's not really a workout with the bike rail's power assist). We enjoyed our ride. The process to check in and get oriented for the ride is well organized. The staff are friendly and responsive. They offer a snack and beverage when you check in. During the ride you can see a bit of the Sacramento River, mostly you ride through peaceful agricultural fields. We saw a variety of birds while riding. The only reason I did not give it 5 stars is due to the pricing. We were fortunate and bought our tickets early and paid what I thought was a high price (I recall we paid about $187 for the 2 of us) for the approximate 90 minute riding experience. Now the price has been raised to $249 for two (though I do see they are offering a $100 off of this amount in August 2020). Wow! That is priced well out of the range for many and this pricing is higher than other rail bikes in the USA. This is not a major thing though as a new venture, I hope they will take the opportunity to pitch in an further clean up debris/trash along their rail bike route (water bottles on the tracks and some community cast offs). Clearly some of the debris is not theirs and has been there for awhile but a regular run along the route by their staff to pick up would further beautify their route. Overall, this is a good addition to the Sacramento area recreational scene. read more

I saw this on TV and it is a fun concept. You sign a waiver and get a few minute instruction on how the cars weigh 300 lbs. and the brakes don't work well. They tell you to stay 30 feet apart. You need to stay 100 feet apart as it takes these cars a distance to stop basically by themselves. They have helmets available, loose seatbelts in a basket. They never recommended the seatbelts. I grabbed one and figured I had to wrap it around the entire seat & me since it is not attached to anything. They need orange bike flags attached so when people have cart issues and have to stop like we did 3 times so the man in back can catch up and fix it, you don't want any accidents (rear ending) because unless someone waves their arms (no recommendation to do so by workers) it's hard to tell people are stopped since u don't see their feet peddling, accidents apparently happen. Be prepared to experience whiplash as these heavy carts are no joke and go up to 35mph. Take ur own safety precautions seriously and please wave ur arms if you are stopped so you don't get run into, or get off your cart until you get help. Otherwise, beautiful scenery along the river and peach/corn crops. read more

We paid $130 for each bike that holds two people. We initially booked a year ago for the week of Christmas but it was pouring rain that entire week so we called in to tell them we would reschedule later. We were told we had one year to reschedule. When calling to reschedule, we were asked for a voucher number. Nobody gave us a voucher number. We talked with somebody on the phone when calling to cancel that reservation and they sent us an email at that time with the canceled reservation. We got a big hassle over the phone about not having a voucher number when they could clearly see that we had paid in full last year, had not used it, and were within the year they told us we could use it. Not sure why it became such a hassle. When we showed up, the gal that was there to greet us and give the safety talk clearly didn't know what she was doing. We were uncertain if maybe she was just brand new because she kept giving the instructions while looking over her shoulder towards the road behind her instead of the people who were in front of her and none of us could hear her. We were asked to arrive 30 minutes before our scheduled 11:00 a.m. departure. I can't imagine why that is since the "safety talk" takes less than 5 minutes. Not to mention that they were running close to 30 minutes behind. So we were there for a full hour with nothing to do. And this is December so it was quite cold. There is no place indoors to wait. While this starts off next to the river, you only get this scenic view for about 5 minutes and then you are riding for an hour along dead or dormant farmland. Not scenic at all. The bikes can be fully motorized so there isn't even any need to be pedaling if you don't want to. You go 30 minutes down the tracks and then everybody has to get off so they can turn the bikes around one by one before everybody gets back on and heads back in. This would have been a nice place to offer people a hot chocolate or warm cider while they waited for the workers to do this. In fact, we thought of many ways that this operation could be improved. We would never do it again or even recommend it unless there were some serious changes made. read more

This is a fun idea. This business has custom built two-seater recumbent four wheeled machines that ride on railroad tracks and are propelled by bicycle cranks with assistance from a electric motor to get you going from a stop. The driver sits on the right hand side and has two brake levers and a throttle switch. There is also a speed and battery readout at the drivers right side. Starting point is right beneath the I-5 Bridge where it crosses over the river next to Swabbies out by the airport, but on the Yolo County side of the river. We booked 12:30 p.m. tour. Be aware you must show up a half hour in advance to check in to fill out the liability waiver Etc. The tour operator provides bicycle helmets that they claim are sanitized after each use. There are no seat belts on the machines. Hand grips are a little too low for my taste. I would prefer that the hand grips with the brakes and throttle were a little higher up. I felt uncomfortable practically reaching beneath my seat to reach the brakes and the throttle. Although there is a good-sized basket on the back with a bungee cord and a first aid kit, it would be nice if they could also provide cup holders. The tour itself consists of riding the rails 3 miles out and then the tour guides pick the machines up off the track and reverse them a hundred and eighty degrees and then you ride 3 miles back. Although there is no steering to worry about the driver needs to pay careful attention to the vehicle in front and not run into them because as I have said there are no seatbelts! The route runs through farmland in the West Sacramento area and it is very pretty. It's neat to see these working farms from the inside, so to speak. This operation seems to be professionally run and we were given a complete rundown on the operation of the machines before we set out. The tour last for about 90 minutes and cover 6 miles total round trip. This was a lot of fun and I would love to do it again but the price makes it prohibitive except for a special occasion. During these times of covid-19 restrictions this is an activity that you can do that provides physical distancing while still engaging with a group. Bike riders are expected to be from the same household. They will not put single riders with strangers. If you go by yourself you still pay the full price. All in all a lot of fun and I would recommend it if you can afford the price. One potential up-selling feature I can recommend would be to attach a GoPro camera to a bicycle helmet and rent that out for an additional fee for a souvenir video. read more

Couldn't find River Fox Train on yelp but this is the right place for this review. River Fox Train has rail bike rides. You go out as a group. The guides are at each end of a group of 8 bikes i think. The folks here are super friendly. The bikes are really easy to pedal, but does come with a small motor if you need. Just think of the pedal boats you may have rented before, but this is 5 times easier even without the motor. We will definitely be back!!! read more

I think this location and the one in the redwoods are the only rail bikes offered in Northern CA. Staff offered free drinks and snacks during Check in which was easy and fast. Helmets were provided. They do have Porta potties on site if you need it. Usually the pricing is $250 per bike that seats 2 ppl but I used a promo code which saved me $100. The bikes are electric assisted, meaning that you do still have to pedal but the throttle gives you that extra boost making the ride easy and non strenuous. The scenery is farmland and orchards on both sides which made the ride a little dusty. Overall though, the experience was fun and unique. There is staff that rides with you, front bike and last bike which ensures safety, helps with technical issues if your battery runs low and maintains the pace. Definitely would recommend if you're looking for something different and new to try out. They also have a cute little gift shop with very reasonably priced merch! read more
