Not the best hotel, but certainly not the worst either…read more If you plan on driving, be aware that you'll probably have to park at SkyCity or somewhere else in the area. Additionally, even if breakfast is not included in your reservation, food and beverage staff members may imply that it is included by ushering you into the buffet with no warning and neglecting to show you a receipt at the end of your meal. If you fall into the same trap we did, expect to pay $34 per person per day. The room and facilities themselves were fine.

We recently stayed at the Novotel Tainui for 1 night to attend a wedding. After returning from the…read morereception in the evening, we were getting ready for bed. On pulling the sheet back, there was a large mark on the sheet near the pillow, which seemed to be a sticky gum-like substance. We made a call to front desk (unanswered) and then room service (also a 40 minute wait by the way) to address the issue. We then had to get dressed again and wait for housekeeping - who dealt with it quickly and remade the bed for us. They expressed their regret and apologised. They assured us this would be followed up as it was not a good standard. On checkout the next morning, no mention was made from staff around this housekeeping issue, nor the interruption to our stay (and the feeling that our room had not been setup to a clean standard). I brought up the matter and received a quick and insincere apology before being presented with our parking charges. Whilst we were happy the matter was dealt to - and the housekeeping lady that attended clearly was unhappy with whomever had made up the bed with dirty sheets, we were not happy with total lack of remediation at checkout. Paying what we did for a single night, an insincere apology really didn't cut it. To have such a response from the staff member at checkout was both insulting and completely unsympathetic. To add further insult to injury after we sent feedback, we were offered a free breakfast 'on our return'. Since when does a future discount remediate poor service? I raised this again and the hotel disagreed with any kind of cash recompense. This could have easily been satisfactorily sorted by comping the parking but they managed to make it worse. We won't be back. Hotel is tired and shabby and our floor smelled of Ammonia. Note - Housekeeping response and communication was excellent. It's a shame the same couldn't be said for those whose role it is to be frontline customer service.

The landscaping needs some attention. There is this killer lounge that is not being used. Our mini fridge was a little funky. I really do hope and pray that they put some tender love into this hotel, it is very similar to The Coronado in San Diego. Hands down I'm happy that we stayed here, but a little disappointed when walking around the grounds. Bonus is they are extremely close to the Glow Worms cave. We could see it from our bedroom window. You can walk down to the local bar or grocery store. The town is not 100% dead thank goodness. Across the street is a nice park you can run around. There is a restaurant in the hotel, we didn't eat there because I'm a vegetarian and they didn't have options for me.

The windows must have been original as they were single paned and allowed the cold to permeate our room. Important things to us are the shower and the bed. The bed came with a heater for the mattress and was okay. Three stars. The shower needs a lot of attention. The hot water took a great while to get hot and the tub was chipped. In fact if you looked closely, chipped and crumby come to mind a lot. The restaurant on site was closed to us as a large group populated it that evening. They did offer to make a reservation for dinner elsewhere but we opted just to settle in early. There really is not much in town to do here except the caves which our 45 minute tour was just perfect. I recommend you stay in Auckland and day trip it here.

The luxury B&B and Farmstay experience was unique and definitely made our honeymoon in New Zealand much more memorable. In the morning, we drove from Auckland to our Hobbiton tour at 1:30 pm. From Hobbiton, we drove about 10 minutes to check in at de Preaux Lodge. After parking in front of their home, Joy greeted us at the door and helped us get settled in. Their home looks like something photoshopped from an interior decorating magazine. Our first thought was, "This is a farm? OMG." The home was decorated with beautiful furniture and our room was very clean with a comfy bed. We were impressed their home has solar panels and motion lights which was especially nice when we walked through the halls at night to the bathroom. Joy and Ian are very kind hosts who were so friendly and welcoming. I appreciate their flexibility and how they customized our farm stay to our schedule. For example, they made breakfast and gave farm tours at different times since one family wanted to leave early and we wanted to sleep in. The farm tour was so much fun. Ian gave us a ride on his tractor while feeding the cows and let us watch him while he gave a sick cow a shot of medicine. My favorite part was giving Daisy, their friendly sheep, a treat and taking a selfie with her. We learned so much from Ian during our farm tour about sustainability and being able to live off the grid. After seeing Joy's garden, we definitely want to grow our own vegetables once we get back home. If you're planning a trip to Hobbiton or Matamata, I definitely recommend staying at de Preaux Lodge. You won't regret it.
