CJ's has become the primary place to do this, at least from the folks that we buy from. Every time it's been done, we've gotten a phone call from them and gotten to choose the cuts that we want and how much ground meat we'd like as well. They've always been super helpful with that process, as we are never totally sure what all the options are - but these guys are always friendly and impatient. It's located just outside of Wapato, a bit out in the country. It's relatively easy to get to, and is easy to get in and out of from the road. Inside, the set up is very simple. It's a room with a couple of freezers and a checkout desk. They've always got tons of different cuts of meat available, and the service is always quick. Everybody's always very friendly and each time I've been there, I've been in and out within a couple minutes. What you pay, they have you pull around the east side of the building and load things up for you. It's honestly tough to want to expect much more from these guys. The prices always seem fair, and even with recent inflationary pressures, their prices for preparing the meat seem to be pretty normal. Give these guys - we are always happy when we do!

We have stopped in a couple of times, and the service and especially the meats are excellent. The owner clearly enjoys interacting with customers, and is a pleasure to do business with. The shop is clean and orderly, so you know that they put effort into appearance and sanitation. It's a little out of the way, so pack an insulated bag, and make the trek. It beats supermarket meats by a long shot. Note that The Mountain Valley Butcher Block is not on Yelp, so the address is: 6500 Hwy 35 Mt. Hood, OR 97041. The address is not the same as the Mountain Valley Meats Service in this Yelp listing.

From our initial contact on the phone to the pick-up of the meat, Jason and his crew do a fantastic job! They take time to carefully explain all the choices a novice meat customer has with the intricacies of butchering. They also adhere to their quoted timelines. The wrapping of the meat is high-quality (other butchers have made unwrapping the meat next to impossible because tissue-like paper sticks to the frozen meats). Their staff is very friendly and helpful at the pick-up also! We ordered teriyaki-flavored pepperoni sticks & they tasted amazing- fresh and flavorful! We look forward to more purchases from Mountain Valley Meats & highly recommend them.

This is THE spot. I…read morehad a little trouble finding this place, because there is literally no signage outside, but it's exactly where Google maps says it is. The inside of the store is divided into two main sections: the market, and the carniceria. An entire wall of the market is a fresh bakery section. They had all kinds of pan dulce, cream horns, and Mexican pastries. Near the front of the store were candies and cakes including several flavors of fresh tres leches cake. This store smells so good inside. Even the meat section smells good. This was a major relief since the two stores I'd stopped by before this both smelled like mold. As soon as I saw how long the line was on the carniceria side, without having any idea what they were actually selling over there, I decided to get in line. I figured that if this many people were willing to stand in line for it, then it must be worth standing in line for. The line moved surprisingly quick. Once I got to the front, I got shy about speaking Spanish. I asked for two tamales. "De cual?" "Umm.. what kind do you have?" "Que dijo?" She stared at me like she knew I speak Spanish. (How did she know?) I ordered one chicken tamale and one corn tamale. I wanted some of the barbecue chicken, but there was no menu, and I had no idea how to order it. Maybe I'll figure it out next time. I grabbed a guava drink from the cooler and a coconut macaron from the candy section. Both were super fresh. The tamales were so bomb. The elote ones tasted a lot like tomalito, but less sweet. The shredded chicken tamale was my favorite though. Very tender, juicy, and flavorful.

Hidden gem! Literally. Located in the very large red building across from Rosauers supermarket in…read morethe Heights, there is no signage anywhere. You either know or miss out on some delicious hot Mexican food, pan dulce, and pantry staples. A friend told me about the freshly made carnitas, and his description had my mouth watering. I went the very next day! Upon entering, I was pleasantly surprised with how large this market is, including the aisles. There's plenty of room to walk up and down each to check out the various Mexican sodas, treats, chips, salsas, piñatas, pan dulce, fruit, and produce. I grabbed a few mangoes for 79 cents, then fresh limes and cilantro, a pack of street size corn tortillas, then quickly realized I needed a cart! With cart in tow, I headed back to the deli counter where they have lots of marinated meat, cotja cheese, shrimp, huge trays of chicharron, roasted quarter, half and full chickens, three different kinds of tamales, and carnitas. When ordering a pound of carnitas, which will make our taco dinner so much easier since they did the work, the young man behind the counter even asked if I wanted to include the fat. While many of the local farm workers favor those sections, I opted to go without it, and I was very appreciative that he accommodated. The other foods looked and smelled so delicious that I couldn't resist getting a quarter of the white meat chicken and two jalapeño & cheese tamales, one pork, and one chicken. As I left the deli area, the smell of fresh bread was everywhere, the trays placed adjacent to entice customers! I selected two pieces of various pan dulce. Admittedly, I had a piece of one as soon as I got into my car! The rest is for breakfast, perfect with morning coffee. Makevsurevto check out the bakery and the beautifully decorated cakes. Also the rack of seasoning packs and the bags of dried chile. In spite of what other reviewers stated, everyone working there was very friendly, greeting me with a hello and a smile, offering assistance, showing genuine kindness. Same with the other shoppers. I was using a cane due to an injury, and people moved their carts out of the way and even asked if I needed them to grab items off the shelves. I'm so glad a friend turned me onto Mercado Guadalajara. Our dinner was fabulous and I'm already looking forward to more carnitas, tamales and roasted chicken.

It's hard to explain how cool this little grocery is. I made it here by happenstance. I was…read moreMabton-bound on the 4th of July (Yup, that's right. Mabton's gangsta firework show can hold its own to any big city fireworks!). There was a "big" grocery store just off the small highway, but I decided to drive a block or two into "downtown" Mabton, and happened upon Su Mercadito. This grocery is like taking a trip to Mexico. Situated in a fairly old building on "Main Street Mabton", this is a tiny store, but it has un corazón grande. In this tiny space, there is so much packed in. Sensory overload is definitely on the menu when you walk around. HEARING: There was Mexican music blaring on the speakers (Love it). SIGHT: There are so many items and colors for one to look at here. I could have spent an hour here in this tiny shop, but I didn't want to be one of "those" gringos! SMELL: There was a small carniceria (meat shop) inside here along with a tub of oysters near the entrance, and they smelled fresh. TOUCH: Although I was clearly a stranger here, I felt pretty welcome by the other customers and the staff here. TASTE: Didn't taste anything until later, but I should say that the cans of Tecate and the habenero chips were party hits. So yes, as I walked in the grocery, I was surprised by the amount of people in this small out of the way store. I made a bee-line for the freezer in the back (grabbed a 12-pack of Tecate for $12). While cerveza shopping, piñatas swung in the breeze above me. I liked how most of the products on the shelves were in Spanish. As I was checking out, the woman at the register talked to me in Spanish, and I had to reply in English. She smiled and then switched to English, too. (man, it should be illegal for me to not know Spanish at my age!). She was very nice and helpful. She even translated the name of the store: Su Mercadito :::: "Your Little Store" * * And I'm glad it is
