Yay!! The first to write a review for the Dutch!! No pressure…read more.. It was my first week in Italy, about 7 years ago. My ex and I were strolling down a narrow alley and came upon this pub, The Dutch. The bartender was young with barely tamed long hair and an excellent grasp of English. We pulled up stools, ordered a strange red beer called Affligem and struck up a conversation. About the 12th time we asked him to translate something for us, he breaks out the largest dictionary I have every seen and not-so-politely tells us to look it up. We were hooked. The Dutch became our hangout for the next 2 years. But alas, all good things must come to an end... I just returned from a trip to Gaeta, my first in awhile. The Dutch is timeless. Many things are the same as they were...the quality food and drink, the warmth of the owners (it's a Mother/Father/Son enterprise), the regulars--both Italian and American. There were also a few upgrades...wi-fi, wii, a multitude of absinthe varieties and ravioli night! Not your normal raviolis, mind you. It's mama's recipe and these suckers are BIG...2 are the same size as a small plate, filled with meaty, cheesy goodness. Yeah, baby. So enough reminiscing, already... The Dutch Pub focuses on fresh, authentic food in a fun, pub atmosphere. Pizza, pasta, burgers, sandwiches, seafood, soups, dutch food (with 24-hour notice)...the menu is pretty robust for a small pub. Much of the produce is from a local garden. Dough is made fresh daily. Even the sandwich buns are house-made. To the bar. The draught beer is pretty unique for the area--Affligem, Wicske Wheat, Murphy's Stout, and of course, Heineken. They have a large menu of shots, and like I mentioned earlier, several varieties of absinthe. And they serve Illy Coffee, yum. The best thing is that The Dutch is thriving even through the recession...just means they'll be around the next time I visit too!! Thanks Yvonne, Rino and Maurizio!!

What a gem! This place is great. My buddy and I were welcomed in and sat right away. The…read moreatmosphere is what you want in a pub. Good music, a large selection of good beers, and everything on the menu sounded tasty. We got the bruschetta roulette for a starter. The flavor was good and one of them had a surprise habañero tucked in there. I wound up picking that one. Wow! Quite the punch. Then got a super spicy burger and a super burger. They were delicious. You may not find this place unless you're walking down the alley, but I highly recommend stopping in if you get the chance.

The menu is a lot of American options, mixed alcohol drinks, and desert. Our food was okay, I got a smoked cheese dish that reminded me of halloumi. Great dish but I'm not sure who could eat two slices of that cheese it was very heavy. Perhaps this should be an appetizer? It came with hand cut fries which is always a treat. We like food that is fresh not frozen. My husband got chicken wings and a hot dog. Chicken wings were nice and crisp and the hot dog was on an atypical bun but was pretty good for being in Italy. For desert we got pistachio cheesecake and sweet potato fries. This was the highlight of the meal. I've never had better cheesecake in my life. I was expecting pistachio seeds on top of white cheesecake but they gave us this dark green pistachio sauce. It looked like baby poop but oh my good heavens it was the best thing ever. The sweet potato fries were super skinny and crisp. I might go back there just for that. Didn't even get a pic of the two because they were gone before I even thought of it! I will totally be back.

The problem is that I asked twice if he was sure it was a zero one (I'm diabetic) the waiter said, twice, 100% sure, my blood sugar after the drink got almost to 300 (I didn't have anything else than the coke)! Maybe it's just an accident, but for me, and in my opinion, very bad, so I won't go back there again, nor tell anyone to go! For me (having a special device), it's been just a bad evening, but I don't think this is the way to manage a business, and how to deal with customers!
