Many birds end up isolated, neglected, or abandoned once people realize how complex their needs actually are. Instead, work with rescues to help the many birds already in need of homes, and support efforts to ultimatelyend the exotic pet trade.

I talked to the owner a little bit, and I can tell she is a decent person who cares in her own way about these birds she's holding captive, but I don't think she understands that they are suffering horribly. Folks at Your Basic Bird, please, please stop selling live animals. There is no need for this unethical practice in 2026, and I believe that you are good people. Please do the right thing and give your birds to sanctuaries where they can be rehabilitated and have enough space and social relationships to perform their natural behaviors. This kind of captivity is just plain cruel, and I know you don't want to be cruel to these birds. And folks out there, please don't buy animals in retail stores. Adopt them from local shelters and save a life instead!

Imagine my happiness when I found out they're a local company! Prices are marginally higher than my local Petco, but big box pet stores can't hold a candle to BB's inventory. Binky Bunny has TONS of stuff, even sample sizes so you don't have to commit to a large product in case you have a picky character at home. I would also add that one feels better supporting BB over the large corporations not just as a small local business, but supporting an owner who is so passionate about bunny rescue. I try to buy toys or new chews once every month or two, and I love that these chews come from manufacturers I can trust completely. It can be hard to find untreated willow, for example, and I'm not willing to take the chance with things found at the big stores. If you're local (only if COVID distancing mandates are lifted) you are able to pick up your order, which is awesome! They aren't a brick and mortar store at this time, but I hope in the future opportunity arises. Other major pros: Rewards program-- 1 point for every dollar spent, 100 points = $5 bucks. Feral Change, a nonprofit dedicated to helping the Oakland community control and manage its feral…read moreand homeless cat population, is a great resource for information and assistance if you are struggling with how to manage community cats in your neighborhood. About a year ago, I noticed what looked like a litter of kittens hanging around outside near my home at all hours and in all weather conditions. I quickly developed the habit of looking for those kitties every time I passed by the trash cans where they often congregated. After some months, I posted an inquiry on NextDoor to see if the kittens had a caretaker. No one claimed the animals. Eventually, I crossed paths with one of the feeders of the cats who explained that they were free-roaming animals that neighbors put food out for and that one, in particular, had a serious tail injury. Concerned about the animals' health and their probable rapid reproduction, I submitted an online request for assistance to Feral Change and attended a trap-neuter-return (TNR) training session. After a few months, a Feral Change volunteer contacted me and arranged for a free spay / neuter appointment, if we caught and transported the cats. Trapping night was a nail-biter, but, ultimately, all three cats received spay / neuter and veterinary services, including a much-needed tail amputation. Things to know: If you submit an online request for assistance, it may take some time to hear back since the organization is run by volunteers. Feral Change will lend out traps, but you will need to capture and transport the animals yourself. If you cannot make one of the free TNR training sessions, instructional videos are also available on YouTube. If you make an appointment and change your mind at the last minute or are a no show without communicating with the organization, they will likely not offer you another free appointment since demand is so high and they are often not able to refill a slot without adequate notice.

Jose was great during the pickup and answered all the questions I had and showed me how to cut our new bunnies nails. We took our little guy to the vet 3 weeks later to get a full health checkup and vaccine. They said he is perfectly healthy and to keep doing whatever I'm doing. It's been about a month with him now and he shows no signs of aggression, loves to be petted and is very good with the litter box. We will be considering Bae's Rabbitry when we are ready for another!
