SHRIMP TEMPURA ROLL
Gavy C.

From the moment we walked in, the place made a great first impression. We were greeted quickly and didn't have to wait long at the door. The lighting was dim but not too dark -- very calming and perfect for a relaxed meal. It also wasn't crowded at the time, which made the atmosphere even nicer. It did take a little over 10 minutes for our waiter to come back and take our order, but he was very sweet and polite. Looking at the menu, I personally wished there were photos. I'm not very familiar with sushi or Japanese dishes, so it would've helped to see what the rolls looked like before ordering -- but that's just my preference. Now the food -- SO good. Everything was well seasoned and not too salty. We ordered the Ra'ckin Shrimp, the crunchy shrimp tempura roll, and classic California rolls, and all of them were 10/10. Definitely would come back!

Yikes! This is what we call "grocery store" sushi, which seems like a Good idea at the time but never really pans out. Giving extra stars for the friendly staff and the spicy tuna roll is good. We ended up getting the 'sushi for two' because the rolls on their own were wildly overpriced. Kudos for being open late(r) on a Monday night!

Mermaid's Brew

Can't go wrong with this spot. Love the variety of sushi here, everything was so fresh and delicious. Great quality of food and flavorful cocktails. Hazel was our amazing server, he provided some recommendations on specialty rolls. The holy crab roll and chili ponzu yellowtail roll were my favorites. The baked stuffed salmon and cold water lobster fried rice is a must have. Their signature cocktail, mermaid's brew was so tasty, highly recommend this drink. The variety of sweet mochi trio was the perfect dessert to end our dinner. The strawberry and mango mochi were my favorites. Dimly lit and nice ambiance, it was a quiet evening since I went on a Monday with friends. I would definitely come back and also check out their happy hour.

My daughter wanted to try los tacos number one right next-door and when I saw the tacos, I immediately said I was not eating there. I was lucky enough to find this place right next-door and it was happy hour so I got a spicy tuna roll and two pieces of yellowtail and an edamame my side for only $16. What an amazing price right in Times Square and the sushi was very delicious. All of the food that we had in Times Square was pretty crappy. This was definitely the best place we ate in Times Square.

They were so awesome they made me cry!!!!!!!!! Literally tears of joy!!!!!! The entire staff especially Levi and the women in charge the night I used my birthday discount blew me away in how well we were treated right down to the Pink T shirts in honor of breast cancer month. So EAT SIP DONATE WE DID!

My partner has been raving about Ra Sushi for a long time, and I finally got to try it out this past week. We went for dinner, and the place was pretty crowded, but there was no wait and we were seated right away. We started with one of the shareables, which was okay, and for my entree I got the shrimp hibachi burrito. It was filling, but flavorless without the sauce that came with it. I thought the food was all overpriced and our waitress was sort of pushy. Nothing was bad, just typical Times Square fare.

Me and a friend stopped in this restaurant for lunch. When I arrived I parked on the street nearby. I walked in and was greeted and sat at a booth. Levi was our server and he was nice! We had the tasting menu and we ordered: Spritz Up Your Life Old Fashioned Garlic Edamame Ra ckin Shrimp shrimp Tempura roll Ra ckin Roll Sake Flight Hibachi Filet mignon and chicken Seafood Udon Toasted Cheesecake Chocolate Brownie The food and drinks were so good! My favorite was the Udon! All in all an amazing experience!

I loved Ra when it was opened in Baltimore. Visited one in nyc. Great food. Service is great. Corn place. Pretty dark inside. With red theme. Got the wings. Delicious. Salad great. Tuna salad amazing. All fresh tasting. Fast service But no more cucumbers salad. That was my favorite. Warm sake was great too. Try if in the area. It was pretty empty. So not much of a vibe. But i was ok with it

wagyu of the world (Australian wagyu filet) + fried rice and hibachi veggies

Per RA Sushi's IG bio, they acquired Haru and it's a new owner but the same team. I bring this up because I'd go to Haru frequently before seeing a Broadway show and go to their old location downtown by an old apartment of mine. I have not been back to RA/formerly Haru since the pandemic though and I don't know if they're just trying to claim they have the same team to get its loyal customers, but the experience felt completely different? The flavor was just missing across the board. I ordered the Wagyu beef (the Australian filet cut), but it was overcooked and my medium rare request was cooked medium. The taste was bland - from the steak to the fried rice and hibachi veggies it came with. I didn't even bother packing the leftovers in a to-go bag. The onion soup, however, was surprisingly good, and I did enjoy the tuna crispy rice from the happy hour menu. My Tito's mule was watered down and the salad's dressing was overly tangy. The service was attentive and despite it being really busy, the server checked in on us, so no complaints there, but the food really felt like a miss. The spring rolls from the happy hour menu were just okay, and my dinner companion who ordered chicken teriyaki described it as "fine," nothing special. I kind of wish I had ventured somewhere new rather than trying to relive the nostalgia of Haru.

This is one of my favorite restaurants OF ALL TIME!!! Everything about this place is amazing!! I love the staff, ambiance, and the food. The restaurant itself is so beautifully decorated and I love the atmosphere it provides with the lighting. I have come here many times and my favorite item by far is the garlic edamame. I don't know what sauce is on it or how it's so good but I literally DREAM about it. Also, the sushi is so delicious and the drinks were incredible and unique. I would recommend this place to anyone in a heartbeat.

We were one of two tables in the whole place yet it took 25 minutes for someone to come take our order. Then they told us that they weren't doing happy hours for the Valentine's holiday, but it wasn't Valentine's Day and it didn't say that on their website. We specifically came for happy hour. We were given venues and it took at least another 10 minutes for someone to come back and take our order.

Have been coming here again recently and it is awesome! As always Great service and attentive staff. Had edamame to start and the yellowtail. Excellent. Good texture and form edamame. Asked for ponzu for the yellowtail and it needs it Sushi and sashimi for two was the entrée. It was as usual a cornucopia of sushi and sashimi. Particularly love the salmon and yellowtail. The tuna was of the highest quality, dark muscle and very firm. A very satisfying dish. I recommend this place.

I am a sucker for delicious Katsu and you'll struggle to find better than Katsu-Hama. Katsu-Hama…read morehas a quaint, Japanese vibe in a small but comfortable dining area. It's not especially big, so you may have a bit of a wait if you frequent right at lunch or in the evening but whatever amount of time you have to wait it will be well worth it. Service is top tier but you come for the food. They have a varied menu with a lot of options so if you're bringing a buddy that isn't up for Katsu, they'll have plenty to choose from. The Katsu is the star and I think what sets this place apart is that they offer Berkshire pork katsu as an option. Arguably some of the best pork, it's great to have the option if you're looking to heighten the experience. I love their pork katsu and go nuts over the chicken katsu curry. It's super crispy, slightly greasy but never off-putting. And it's served with the most delicate and delicious cabbage slaw. I could eat a mountain of this it's so good. Highly recommended.

This place is a bit hard to spot, but it's on the same side of the street as the sorta famous (50…read moreyears +) Phil's Stationery. Katsu-Hama is about two doors to the Left of Phil's, and has minimal, very discreet signage. I got some tonkatsu...I forget the exact type, but it was essentially the most fatty of the tonkatsu offered. It came with cabbage (with a sesame ginger type dressing), daikon radish (with some type of sauce on top), and the standard sauce for the tonkatsu, along with some crushed sesame seed and hot mustard. I'd have to say...the tonkatsu was quite good....not quite as sublime as my favorite tonkatsu place in Tokyo...but still, very, very good. The dish also came with a bowl of miso soup (good, and not overly salty) and a bowl of white rice, which I considered the most disappointing part of the meal. The rice seemed a bit dried out...not moist.... All in all, an excellent meal. I'd definitely come back.

The creamy kimchi udon was ok. It didn't feel like one dish, but tasted good. The una don was great. Good sauce and blend of supporting veggies to enhance the taste. Service was super quick. Everything was rapid fire: order taken, food comes out quick, water gets replinished before asking, plates are taken the moment they are finished, and check comes immediately after asking for it. Interior was cramped and loud. Really fitting as many tables as they can in the space. I saw others mentioning to make reservations. I went without one and got lucky. There was a table opening 30 minutes out. Would recommend having one, but you can definitely try walking in. First come first serve basis Overall, solid spot for great tasting food. Many of the clientele are Japanese so we knew we were at an authentic place. We got: - Fried oysters: the batter was light and crispy and oysters piping hot - Vinegared Mackerel w/ Ponzu Sauce: fresh & tangy - Intestines Hotpot: comforting & light despite the fattiness of the intestines - Creamed Mentai Udon: they split it in 2 small bowls for us since we were sharing. Udon had a nice bouncy chew and sauce was not heavy We also got a bottle of sake, and they poured it in a beautiful sake decanter to keep it cold. First time seeing cold sake presented this way which was very cool. We tried Suntory draft beer since that was the only draft they had, which was odd since most Japanese places carry Asahi/Sapporo, definitely not as light as the other two beers I'm used to. Even though I was stuffed by the end, I didn't feel lethargic, everything felt light without compromising flavor. Service was attentive although our udon came at the very end, we thought they had forgot about it.

There are a few restaurants in NYC that make you feel like you are stepping into a Japan portal,…read moreand Okatte Tanto is no doubt one of those. As you step into the restaurant, you immediately feel a sense of formality and strictness. It's also very quiet in the restaurant, and friendly to solo diners, adding on more to the Japan-esque feel. The food is high quality here, but the portions are small, and it is pricey. I would budget to spend around $100 a person here after tip and tax, if you ignore the prices on the menu and try a variety of things. The tuna from the bone is the most famous dish here, but I was not able to get it as they sell out very fast. But I tried the sashimi and it was high quality -- just that it was not enough food for me. But that makes it more in line with portions back in Japan. They have an extensive sake list and they also have the casual cocktail options like lemon drops you would find in Tokyo. The atmosphere really transports you straight into Japan if that is something you are looking for. Expect to pay a premium for small-ish portions, but at the same time very well-made and authentic food.
