Without a joke, Ra Ra Superstar has to be my favourite new place for vintage wares. I was strolling along Given Terrace and I almost walked straight past it because it literally has its own little side lane that's almost hidden in plain sight.
At first you walk by and see some mannequins and some specials for about $25 and think "oh yes, very good". But then you stumble up the lane even further and, in my case, buy a beautiful skirt that is very cheap but too expensive for a poor uni student living out of home. You're greeted by colourful umbrellas and garden chairs that throw you into a world of wonder, really. And the pink cement, yes I said pink cement, also gives the place a really decadent, yet modestly endearing quality. The real novelty of this place is how this gorgeous and unassuming lane opens out into a sweet little shop that seems like a world of its own.
I was enchanted by the cardboard hangers and wooden furnishings and bursts of colour instantly. And anyone who knows me well will know that if a place has vintage luggage, I will instantly fall in love with it and oh yes, Ra Ra Superstar has vintage luggage (only as display unfortunately though). But around this little homely shop you can see an old, inviting wooden table that houses crochet hairpins, accessories, and every type of bow you could ever want as a girl. There's a zebra throw rug underneath this table that you would think would be incongruent in such a quixotic place but, funnily enough, it adds to its quaint charm and appeal. Looking around the place, you'll probably alight upon the many frilled socks, all handmade, and in the change room, I was delighted to find a picture of Audrey Hepburn that I've had in my room since I was about 17.
The lovely girl I spoke to said they do alterations for the dresses and that all outfit materials are 100% recycled. Not to mention that their hangers are sourced from Green Hanger, a cardboard-recycling hanger supplier based in Melbourne. Every extra bit of information I heard about Ra Ra Superstar only made me love it more. Recycled? Yeah! Reducing your carbon footprint? Ok! Peter pan collars and sailor-style dresses? Why yes, I am in love with you.
This homely place is every vintage-hunter's dream. They've only been in Paddington for about a year but they seem to be thriving. Original designs + a genuine attitude = a really amazing place. read more
