I've been seeing Ginnymae for about 2 years now and I'm finally getting around to writing this review of her awesomeness! I was that person who saw the same stylist for many years and after building that relationship is was VERY hard for me to switch to someone new but I'm very happy that I did. She doesn't double book me so that I'm waiting forever, she gets the job done and my hair always looks amazing. I'm a blonde (a picky blonde) so healthy blonde hair can be ruined by someone who doesn't know what they're doing. What sets Ginnymae apart from stylists is that she's more concerned with how you look leaving that salon because every head of hair is a walking billboard.. VERY TRUE. Ginnymae is a natural, doing hair is just what she's great at. I now know about 10 people that go to her..and that's for a reason. Other than that Audra and Eddie who run the salon are also Fabulous! In desperate need of a haircut, I grabbed this Groupon for R17 and gave it shot. I'm not going back. The shampoo went fine, the cut was quick and didn't really make any sense to me, but I told the stylist I wanted to keep some of my length and just make it look healthier and not so dead. I ended up with really strange lengths and a style I couldn't redo myself. I told the stylist I don't use any products in my hair, but she insisted on using several. I thought I was pretty clear on what I wanted. Oh well. Weirdest part - some guy selling taser guns came soliciting and customers actually bought some from him and were setting them off in the salon! I just recently moved back to the Sacramento and I was in desperate need of a haircut. So I hit Yelp up and started searching of local hair salons near me and of course R17 popped up one of the first salons to show on my feed. Made my appointment, receptionist was really sweet and helpful. She scheduled me with Melissa and upon arrival she was already there and I arrived a bit earlier to my appointment! Which is nice! The salon itself, is really clean and organized. Everything is pretty modern and updated. I love how they have an area where guest can sit while they wait it's very roomy! She immediately took care of me and recommended on what to do for my dry ends! As for my haircut, I LOVE!!! I can't complain she styled it perfectly to my shape or face and even kept the length. ( it can be irritating when stylist cut too much hair!) but nope had the opposite experience. My hair feels amazing, and she was so sweet making sure I was okay with my haircut and constantly updating on what she was doing. She sent me home with a sample of their product UNITE which I love!!! Just found this salon through a coworker and it was LIFE CHANGING. I went in with partially done hair that was absolutely appalling. It looked like my previous stylist soaked my hair in Sunny D to tone it. Melissa took such great care of me, made me feel comfortable with the work she was going to do, and took the bright yellow hair I had and turned it into the best hair I've ever had. The first I came here was to extension removal from when I was in LA. The second experience was to get my hair permed because everyone seemed professional and when I asked the stylist that did my hair, she sounded like she knew what she was doing. Long behold that after I get my perm my hair is dead.. I expected the initial frizz/poodle hair but after a couple of days went by there was no improvement. In fact, my hair was falling out and breaking. I would have went back to the salon but I had to go back to LA earlier then expected. It's been about a month and 1/2 now and my hair is basically yelling at me b/c its dead. the ends where the perm was OK are now straight and breaking. I give this place 3 stars b/c the customer service is great and the stylist, conceptually, seem to know what they are doing but the fact that my is THIS damaged, is unreasonable. (I've gotten perms for several years and I only perm my hair about once a year so I know when my hair has been over processed) read more

Melissa is awesome! She really listens to the needs of her clients and delivers! Her prices are extremely reasonable. I found her through Groupon for a deep conditioning treatment & could tell from our conversation that she had a great deal of knowledge about color as well. I went in to see her last night for my color appointment and was not disappointed! I have been trying to go back to my natural hair color and unfortunately spending through the roof prices at "bougie" salons for unsatisfactory results. I am so glad I went to Melissa for my hair color. It's finally the color I want! The other awesome part is the she sets realistic expectations. I had another hair dresser really damage my hair recently, so she let me know that it may take one more session to get the exact color I want because of the porosity. I've had a hard time finding a salon that I can keep coming back to, and one day a friend recommended R17. I've been going there regularly for a little over a year and have never been happier! Brittany does a wonderful job with my hair. She always listens to what I want, gives her own recommendations for what will work best (which are always on point), and executes it beautifully. To this day, she is probably the only stylist who has every been able to trim my bangs exactly how I want them, so of course I keep coming back. What I love best about R17 salon is the comfortable atmosphere and super friendly staff. I feel like I'm visiting an old friend when I come in. Like another review said, I followed Audra from her previous salon. Audra makes you feel comfortable and really listens to what you want. She wants to make sure you're happy with your cut. Audra really knows what she's doing. She can take any picture you bring in and recreate that haircut. It's really amazing! She does a fantastic job on my naturally curly hair and not many stylists know what to do with curls. She asked questions about my hair and not to offer me products, but to know what type of hair she is working with. I really liked the haircut she gave me, but the only thing was some parts of my hair needed additional trimming and I was able to do that myself so it wasn't a big deal. She is on maternity leave right now and I needed a hair cut badly and she referred me to another stylist Jessica who is also amazing. Audra is a wonderful and very talented stylist. She really does her best to make sure she executes what the client has in mind, however complicated that may be. As a financially-challenged graduate student, I'm always irked when stylists try to push hair-products on me, but Audra simply introduces her arsenal of gels, oils, and shampoos - and never pushes anything on you, which I really appreciate. Although I will mention she has introduced me to some wonderful hair products, notably Moroccanoil, and the body-boosting Dust-it, which I purchased either directly from her or on my own. She's very personable and easy to communicate with, making your salon visit something to look forward to. read more

My mother was a stylist and had 2 hair salons in Japan and one in So. Cal, so I always had a trust worthy stylist for as long as I could remember. However, now that I'm on my own, I have had to look for someone else. Luckily I found Megan at R17. She was really nice and understanding about my nervous feelings of finding another stylist (I had a couple of bad experiences). I wanted to get my hair cut to shoulder length, colored back to my natural dark brown, and have magenta extensions on the sides so it would look nice both down and up (The extensions were something I've never done before as well as have any crazy color in my hair). She explained the steps she was going to take and the process and it was a lot quicker than I thought! Just about 2hrs for all of that! The extensions that she used were these single strands of blonde that she colored magenta and stuck it into a bead like holder that she looped my hair through. Then she clamped the bead shut to hold it in place. I really really love the way my hair looks and so does my boyfriend. And the price was just right, all of that for just $140!! I have no complaints what so ever about the service. The beads in my hair though are going to take some time for me to get used to. read more
