Um... Amazing, stunning, incredible, fantastic, mind-blowing, wow. Genuinely my favorite art gallery, period. Got a suggestion to come here because I absolutely love picture books and the things they have in this gallery does not disappoint at all. Here are some of my favorite things in this gallery: - The fact that this gallery used to be an old bank is kind of wild. Like all of Marc Brown's Arthur prints are just sitting in a bank vault which is so weird but wonderful at the same time. - The collection of artists they have here is absolutely mind-blowing. Especially the Mo Willems section is absolutely incredible as they have both his original artworks from his hit series as well as new and explorative art that he has been working on. Other favorite artists there included Rosemary Wells (Max & Ruby), Grace Lin, Jason Chin, and Marc Brown. It was like a trip down my childhood memory lane. - I super appreciate that alongside these artworks, the gallery also has the picture books that accompany this and it also doubles, in a way, like a children's bookstore. Honestly, cannot recommend it more especially if you are into picture books. After coming here, I feel like there needs to be more galleries dedicated to picture book art as so many people can relate to it from their childhood. Loved getting to visit this gallery! read more

Very cool gallery space, especially the cool bank vault doors that lead into certain areas. They had a Leonard Nimoy photography exhibit goign on as well as a great collection of Dr. Suess orgionals and lithographs. Michelson is my go to gallery for Barry Moser wood engravings. They have an extensive collection due in part to their long connection to Moser and his proximity in Western Massachusetts. Leonard Baskin (formerly a local artist) and Leonard Nimoy (an accomplished B&W photographer and Vulcan) are also well represented. Be careful when wandering into the "vault". You may find Nimoy's nudes of very large ladies. read more

R. Michelson is about as good as it gets. Paul rocks. He has helped us with SO many framing projects, and they always come out great. Getting art framed at a gallery can be a little spendy, but you know it's done right. The staff here help you get the frame, the mats, everything, all matched to the art so it looks spectacular. We've had 7 pieces framed there, 2 we bought there. One was a wedding present for friends in Montana. Michelson's got it matted, framed, and shipped in plenty of time for the wedding. This is possibly my favorite gallery. I enjoy the selected and range of representational work. From local landscapes to famous book illustrations. I don't even mind that I could never afford to buy anything and just enjoy the view. How long has the Nemoy show been up? Seems like forever. read more

A rather large gallery with heavy emphasis on local artists. This being the Valley, these local artists aren't piddly little painters, this is serious, wide-ranging stuff that any art lover should check out. I was really impressed by the variety and skill shown -- it was almost all paintings (if not all), but there were pieces to please all types. This used to be a bank so even the old vaults have been turned into showing space. Don't worry, they've done good things with the lighting since then. read more

I saw a fantastic showing of horses by artist Brendon Connors. Recommended to friends who were equally impressed. He is amazing.

The only real art gallery in Northampton is R. Michelson on Main Street. Using an old bank building, a wonderful collection of formal nooks and crannies, he has gathered a first-rate, world class collection of work by talented artists. My favorite, by far, is Leonard Baskin -whose prints, drawings and sculpture are so deep, sad and moving. He has , as well, gathered a fine collection of unique, original work by some of the best childrens' illustrators in the world. All this, coupled with a close friendship with Leonard Nimoy (the original Dr. Spock!) and his photographs, makes this the best art spot in town. read more
