Of course it helps if the range they sell is good and here it's terrific. Masses of fish - that's an obvious thing to say - but throw in a large range of shellfish, both fresh and frozen, and you have a truly outstanding stall. Once the people who run it get to know you they'll keep various cuts of fish to one side if you shop regularly, and if you have a particular requirement they will do whatever they can to fulfil it. I travel to the market every couple of weeks and the trip to Myers stall is always one of the highlights as everyone is so nice. This is my pick of the fish and seafood stalls in the market by some distance.

They are happy to take special requests and order in. Just because their display is smaller doesn't mean they lack in stock! My one drawback with all these fish stalls in a row is that it can be difficult to work out which is which, unless you step back and look at the signs. Neverthless, despite being flanked by Bethells, they stand their ground and do a good job!

You have to go look around to see what i mean but there are masses upon masses of great things in here. The staff are that lovely that they speak to you about recipes you could try and offer helpful hints and tips. I'll definitely be going back to investigate further when I'm not rushing to the theatre!

As you enter the store the decor is a fascination, with beautiful lanterns hanging overhead and a beautiful silver water globe feature in the entrance. Immediately as you go in on the left there is the fruit and veg section which offers up more exotic fruit and veg than I have ever actually seen. They had enoki mushrooms, star fruit, dragon fruit, bamboo and so much more. They had fruit that I don't even know what it is. The only description I can offer is that they reminded me of Stinky from the Moomins, only more pinkish brown than black! I'm totally going back to try them some day. As well as that they had EVERYTHING to do with traditional chinese, korean and other asian cuisines. With more noodles than you can imagine, cakes, fish, 'mochi' and so much more it is probably the most exciting place to shop for food in Leeds. I can only hope that at some point I will get to live near enough to make it my regular supermarket! My boyfriend and I have made a pact that we will go in there and put together a meal sometime and I'm going to hold him to it! A delight to shop in, but pop in just to see.

It has whole fish and parts of fish all laid out on ice for you to properly gawp at and choose which to take home for your tea (that's supper or dinner to the Southern folk in case you didn't understand). I would rather buy fresh fish from here any day than pick up a piece stuck on a polystyrene tray and wrapped in cellophane. Apart from familiar types of fish such as Pollock, haddock, cod and tuna fish you can get exciting things like oysters and crab at Ramsdens.

I put the smell of most markets down to the fish section, and what would it be without one! Whether you love it or it just makes you want to gag, I find looking at the raw selection of water creatures absolutely fascinating. Ramsdens specialises in all different kinds, with a smile, despite the pong below his nose! Be it cod, haddock, fresh tuna, swordfish or an assortment od seafood you happen to be after, they can sort you out, for a fraction of what you'd pay down your local Tesco's, or other leading supermarket fish counter. Of course, some types are rarer and therefore pricier, but you can guarantee a good bit of service to go with your uncooked dinner.
