I made a mental note, and when I needed my hair cut a month ago, I made an appointment. I couldn't recall her stylist's name, so I just went with the luck of the draw. I got a negative impression the minute I walked through the door. The atmosphere was depressing. The floor was in dire need of a good scrub, and the walls were dirty and needed some repairs and painting. The receptionist who greeted me turned out to be my stylist, and a very junior one at that. She handed me a form to fill out, much like at a doctor's office. The form asked for things like my birth date and employment details, which is information that is completely unnecessary for a salon to be collecting. I left most of the form blank. I told my stylist that I wanted a chin-length bob with some bangs, which is a fairly straightforward cut. The bob part was okay; it was at least even, but lacked any texture. I was going to ask her to add a bit more shape, but she wanted to get to the bangs first. I told her how short I wanted them, and closed my eyes while she snipped away. When I opened my eyes, I almost cried, and exclaimed "they're so short!". Baby bangs short. "I'm nine years old and I'm going to give myself a haircut" short. She clearly felt bad about it, but my bangs weren't even cut well despite their length. Again, they lacked proper shape and texture. I sat in silence for the rest of the cut; I couldn't even look in the mirror. Instead, I fixated on the dirty floor, and on the piles of dirty hair that remained unswept as two otherwise-unoccupied stylists chatted amongst themselves. I'm sure that there are good stylists here and clearly at least one of them can give an amazing hair cut, but the salon needs a remodel and additional training for their junior stylists.

The ladies helping us pointed out the ones that would be safer to use since it wasn't our personal tub as far as having less ingredients in them. We go a couple and then got into conversation about skin I have psoriasis and my nephew had eczema. She had me try some balm on my hand that had a dry patch. I didn't purchase it at first however the next day that patch that was cracked and bleeding for weeks no matter how much lotion I used was no longer as cracked as it was. It was already softer feeling and on the mend so we made it appoint to stop back by before our ferry home and I got 4 jars. There was a different lady than from the previous day however she was also super friendly and helpful. I am really hoping this will help my nephew and so far it's helping my skin tremendously after two days of use. A little goes a long way and scent is light and pleasant. As the lady said if you can get past the label saying baby bottoms balm it has multiple uses.

My first holes were pierced with a gun with no pain afterward, yet when I went here and they pierced my second and third they bled, bruised, swole and are still tender to this day. I went to see Dr. Gordon two years ago as a new family doctor. He was fine -- nothing exceptional, but fine. Since that time, I had one isolated appointment (I think it was even through the walk-in clinic!) with my parents' doctor (because I was at home visiting for a long-ish period of time and was leaving the country for several months before returning to Victoria) -- but I still considered Dr. Gordon my family doctor. However, when I phoned to book an appointment with Dr. Gordon, the receptionist at the Cook St. Village Health Centre rudely informed me that the fact that I had seen another doctor in the meantime indicates that I am 'doctor hopping,' I clearly do not consider Dr. Gordon my family doctor, and I am depriving other people of a doctor. I can completely understand her point (although do not feel she is correct in suggesting I am regularly seeing two family doctors), but her tone and attitude were so unnecessarily patronizing and offensive that I will not be returning to this clinic. I know that the receptionist's attitude may not reflect that of the practitioners, but for me it is important to feel comfortable and supported when visiting a clinic -- and I felt that I received the very opposite of that during this interaction (kind of sadly ironic when you consider this is supposed to be a 'holistic' practice that addresses all aspects of health and healing).

But Michelle at Vamp gave me the best cut I've ever had, period - including at some of the most expensive/'prestigious' salons out there. (It was also one of the least expensive cuts I've ever had, which is a huge bonus.) So if you're already short-haired or thinking about an edgy change-up, and especially if you're an ultra-cropped pixie girl or looking for some chic in your punk, definitely go see Michelle at Vamp.
