East Street Market - The Market!

My life in London was not complete until I discovered East street. Now, I go there every Saturday…read moreand buy as much food as I can carry. Three kilos of carrots for one pound? Ten pink lady apples for one pound? A plethora of green beans for 100 pounds... haha no ONE POUND! It's just amazing. I can hardly contain myself every time I go. Besides the cheap produce, there's snacks, cereal, clothes, makeup, small electronics, CDs, stationary, shoes, dishware, it's like a one man band - East Street does it all. Also, it's a real local kind of place - no tourists here, just people going about their weekend shopping. And, I feel all down-home, banjo-strumming good when I go there. It's not exactly a wealthy part of town though (read - not at all) so if that doesn't speak to you, stick to Borough market, but I think East Street is a winner. And, all the workers in the stands are friendly. They call me 'love' and darlin' and 'sweetheart.' and it tickles me delighted, like overpriced Elmo dolls. Final grade? A+.

A whole bucket of garlic for £2, 10 red onions for a pound, a whole bag of vine tomatoes also for a pound...the list goes on and on. It makes you feel stupid that you've been paying more than double the price in a supermarket for god knows how many years. And of course it has all the ethical plus points too - less or no packaging and supportive of the local community. Make sure to shop around as prices, quantities and quality vary from stall to stall, but in general it's all excellent. The market caters mostly for the locals so don't, by any means, expect a Borough market experience - there are no posh modern delis here - just simple local no frills produce. The perfect place for credit crunch shopping!

Their signature offering is the "Persepolis Feasting Menu," which came with multiple courses to share. There's no set menu and the dishes offered change by the day, so there's always an element of surprise! We were started with ramekins of a sweet potato soup with yogurt, but my favorite course was the meze platter, which came with pasta salad, falafels, sweet potato fritters, pickles, a cottage cheese dip, tahini, and hummus with cheese puffs sticking out! The mezes were served with pita bread slices, which were perfect for eating with the dips. The next three dishes were amazing as well: crispy halloumi with sesame and honey; fattet, or pita chips with spinach, chickpeas, and tahini; and a creative dish of chips, melted cheese, cauliflower, mushrooms, tomato, and onion, all seasoned with a yellow spice mixture. Finally, the last two dishes were pakora, or battered mixed vegetables (onion, cauliflower, pickles) served with saffron and dill aiolis on the side; and a final platter of rice, cucumber/onion/tomato salad, a red kidney bean stew, and a potato stew. While decent, the fried vegetables were on the greasy side, and the stews had an overly sweet flavor, and I was more impressed with the earlier courses. Finally came a colorful platter of dessert, which included ice cream topped with rose syrup; two different types of baklava; a cream-filled cake roll; jalebis; Turkish delight; cookie sandwiches; dates; and sliced strawberries/oranges. Everything we had here was flavorful, delicious, creative, and beautifully-presented, and enjoying the Middle Eastern hospitality was a great experience!

Still my fave veg restaurant, for the tasty food, the huge portion sizes and cheap prices. But even this impatient native New Yorker is more then happy to deal. The avo smoothie is incredibly rich and whilst I thought the rose taste was a bit overpowering at this visit (my husband said it tasted like soap haha), I overall still loved it. My husband's date smoothie on the other hand was sadly underwhelming. My spiced broccoli soup was thick and creamy and full of flavour. I was so stuffed I regretted ordering the fried plaintains and eggs on bread as my main so my husband ended up eating it haha. But as I've ordered this before, I know how great it is. And he agreed, as it's slightly spicy and full of flavour. His main dish sadly again was bland: similar to a stir fry of veg and bread. He did enjoy the sahlep for takeaway though.

Best greengrocer in London? I am not really well placed to judge but Tony Booth's outlet has the…read moremost amazing array of produce I have ever seen. The fact that I will (semi) willingly trek across from Highbury to shop here says it all. The hoard of mushrooms of all varieties that greets customers at the front of the shop makes me immediately think about wild mushroom risottos and tarts (irrespective of the reason I am here). They are displayed with justifiable pride - this is the only place where I know ceps and morels (and all their mushroom friends) are guaranteed to be available to buy when in season. It is not just about the mushrooms though - all the other vegetable and fruit goodies you would expect from a greengrocer are here as well as a few things that one wouldn't (I spied some preserved lemons here yesterday). Put this together with staff who are friendly and knowledgeable and you have a winner - fantastic!

It was a Borough Market institution…read more But with the diaspora of market vendors either kicked out of Borough for selling elsewhere or tired of paying for the ever-increasing Borough rent, Booths moved on over to the new Maltby Street Market. This works for me. Because now I can find my fresh seasonal fruit and vegetables for the week along with select pantry items amongst other locals who are perusing the goods because they actually want to buy them and cook them rather than gawk at them with their enormous DSLRs (and just generally get in my way). Booths is always buzzing with activity on Saturday mornings, and you will undoubtedly see one or two restaurant vans outside picking up their produce, a testament to Booth's quality and to the fact that the model of picking up and moving to a truly local market works. Who needs Borough when there's Maltby Street?

The lady was nice enough to get us a table even though they were fully booked. What was ridiculous was that we looked on the website which clearly stated you were doing bottomless brunch to find out that they don't even serve brunch which means food. We brushed it off and thought okay £25 for bottomless drinks that's okay we went there to find out that the website is wrong and there is no bottomless brunch. They suggested that we sit and have a drink which is £10-12 for 1 cocktail which is tiny! The security was also sooo rude they were looking down at us like we were trash! I feel that this a lot of false advertisement and they should sort out there website as it's super misleading! WING AND TINGS They were amazing! Super lovely staff, amazing food! Great beer! I will be going back again and again!

Market Row is very small & it consists primarily of food stalls, and it was very unappealing. Brixton Village is a little larger (although not nearly as large as the description had sounded), and it has lots of small restaurants plus a few tiny shops. We ate dinner at one of the restaurants and it was pretty bad (see my separate review).
