The slider was good and so was the Italian. The extra cost for mayo was a bit much but overall it was a good stop.

This is my second visit to Janina's…read more The first time I got schnitzel, garlic mashed potatoes and type of creamy cucumber salad. It was fantastic! The potatoes were so perfectly garlicky, and the schnitzel was delicious. The cucumber salad was tasty and I've never eaten cucumbers that tasted as good as those ones. This dill pickle soup is the reason I came here. I read about it and I just had to try it. It's delicious and flavourful but isn't overwhelmingly "pickley", and everything I hoped it would be. The cabbage rolls tasted very authentic. They have a nice light flavour, and a really good texture. To top it off, they give you a homemade roll that is perfectly crispy on the outside and soft and buttery on the inside. I was so impressed by this little hidden gem. The prices are great. The staff is so friendly and welcoming, and very attentive. The food is delicious. They even have a little eating area you're welcome to sit at to dine in. It's very casual and quaint. I will be back! Thank you

It's pretty rare that I'm making a stop in Dartmouth, and if I am it's for one of three reasons:…read more 1. It's Christmas and I'm shopping at Micmac Mall. 2. I'm trying out a new-to-me Dark Side restaurant. 3. I got stabbed on my way through Dartmouth and am now at the ER. Luckily for me, my most recent visit was for #2 (snicker), with my target being Janina's Cafe, a lunch spot in Burnside that has a Polish bent to it. Located in one of the massive strip mall-ish buildings between Burnside Dr and Brownlow, it took some Internet sleuthing and good old fashioned driving around the building to find out how to get in (hint, it's on the Burnside, uh, side, by the RBC office).  Janina's is a lunch spot catering to desk jockeys if I've ever seen one, with just two two-person tables, a counter with the hot foods in trays, and a kitchen in back. The menu is your typical sandwiches, soups and salads that you would expect, as well as hot meals that vary with the day of the week. While the guy behind the counter was suggesting the shepherd's pie, I was here to try their Polish fare; I don't need to cross the bridge for a mediocre club sandwich and salad, there's plenty of those in downtown Halifax. Unfortunately, their Polish items are few and far between, with only one a day, if that on some days. I was here on cabbage roll day though, so I went with those and a good ol' fashioned Caesar salad.  It was nice that the Caesar was made to order, instead of being a soggy mess that had been sitting there since 11am. The cabbage rolls were larger than I had expected, being the thickness of a small wrap, instead of egg roll-sized, as I had pictured in my mind's eye. I took a seat, the only person to do so during my time there, and dug in. The Caesar wasn't anything fancy, with mozza for the cheese, and it was hard to tell if the sparse bacon bits were real crumbled bacon or sketchy fake-on. At least it saved me the guilt of ordering fries. The cabbage rolls on the other hand were fantastic. The filling had a generous amount of ground pork (I think) mixed with rice, and was still moist and not overcooked. The tomato and cream sauce added further richness and a slight acidic bite. Their may have only been two, but like I said, they were big and hearty. While a person like me would love it if they took more of a Polish food focus, Janina's is making a go of it feeding the hungry Burnside masses what they want. Better to have the occasional access to Polish food, than having a place like the Russian Laura's Cafe which never found a market for its tasty dumplings and borscht. Pop in if their Polish grub is on the menu that day, and join me in lobbying for fresh pierogies to be available everyday!  #VotePierogie2016

It's a bit of a long haul from my office, but an appointment in the area brought me by and I had to scratch my sub itch. The menu is pretty compact , with eight-ish subs on the go at any given time, including a rotating monthly special. Prices seem to be comparable to the premium subs at their local competitors. The Italian bonafides of the Buddy Roma caught my eye: with lettuce, tomato, provolone, mortadella, ham, salami and roasted bell peppers, all held together with a pesto mayo, it seemed like an easy win! Taking the hefty sandwich back to the office, I unwrapped it and dug in. There was a generous portion of meats, with their tender, salty and savoury goodness melding together. The provolone added its signature mild funk, while the roasted bell pepper and pesto mayo really brought up the flavour with bright vegetal notes. Some acid would have been nice to cut through all the richness, but this was definitely a tasty sub nonetheless! A truly great sandwich is often more about the bread than it is the ingredients, and while Buddy's standard sub bun wasn't groundbreaking, it was light and soft, and held up well against its robust fillings. A return visit had me trying their clubhouse sub. If you're a club sandwich purist, it's a bit of a curve ball since in addition to lettuce, tomato, bacon and turkey, it has Black Forest ham, Swiss cheese and dill pickles. Let's be honest, getting your nose out of joint about something like a club sandwich is a bit much, and these additions are all very typical sandwich ingredients in their own right. Once again, it was a very solid sandwich! It was generously filled, and the *real* crumbled bacon stood out flavour-wise, with the tomato and pickles cutting through the savoury ingredients and slathering of mayo. The hefty sandwich made for two good lunches. I could have put it down in one, but I would have been significantly less productive that afternoon. Buddy's is putting some quality sandwiches out and fills what was a surprising blind spot for downtown Halifax, while filling up your stomach.

The staff are very friendly and I had a good time chatting with them. The store is clean and well kept, and there is a really good variety of Russian groceries on the shelves, as well as some from Poland and Israel. There is also a frozen section including Russian ice cream and perogy dumplings, as well as a deli counter. The prices are good too, not too expensive. If you are wondering what to buy, I can recommend the Russian chocolates, which you can buy by the piece and are attractively wrapped in pretty papers. There is a whole wall devoted to Russian chocolates! Their baked goods and deli items also look delicious. They store has their own ovens and they do catering too. I understand it is hard to sell high-quality goods because it probably takes 4-6 months to ship them from Russia, but come on, how can you sell expired food, this is not Russia!
