What an interesting place situated in the middle of the largest slum in all of the Americas. Yes…read moreits in the favela but its very safe. It was still breakfast time so I got the Nepolitan Crepe. It was a tapioca crepe filled with mozzarella, turkey breast and catupiry cheese. It was amazing and cost 22 Reais which is like 4 dollars. Definitely worth it. To drink, I had a black coffee and an exotic cocktail. I don't remember what all was in it but it was very good. The ambiance was ok and the service was fine. I think that the atmosphere would have been better in the evening with a more lively crowd. I was there in the morning and it was quite slow. I'd like to go back and try more dishes and drinks. I would say that the mixed drinks were quite a bit more expensive than other places in the area. Most places drinks are around 20 to 25. At Mirante they were more like 35 to 45.

Very nice outdoor type restaurant and bar in the Rochina neighborhood. I was told it was a favela…read moreneighboorhood, but i dont know. Once you enter the Rochina neighboorhood, there is a big mural, you drive up the narrow hill. The restaurant sits way up top of the hill, overlookong lush, green trees. Dtunning view. They are known for their steaks. We ordered a beef steak that came with a side of black beans (feijão), white rice, a few pieces of potatoes. I asked for a huge plate of as many steamed vegetables they could think of. The waiter seemed sort of confused. The chef came out to ask what I wanted. I explained i wanted some vegetables with the meal, like a plate full. Veggies are so challenging to get in restaurants in Brazil. I really do not quite understand why. Theyook at you like you're an alien or something!!! Lol Anyway, we had nice, ice cold beers. Great pagode / samba playing. Not crowded. Only a small group of three people a few times away. And another large group in a completely different area. Everyone wore masks. Very polite, welcoming. I can tell this is a great bar and place to hang out in the evenings too. My friends enjoyed the steak. They ate some, asked them to put it back on the grill for more well done. They brought it back out and we enjoyed ourselves. The chef also came out to see how we liked everything and walked us out. I took a picture with him too. This place has personality. They make you feel at home!!

There's nothing like the city of Rio in The States but if I had to make a comparison for Americans…read moreit'd be like a combination of New York, LA, and Las Vegas all rolled into one. Casual dress is pretty much always acceptable and it's a total beach vibe, (LA) there's an indescribable energy and businesses are close quartered (NYC) and you can drink absolutely anywhere. (Vegas) B.G. is just one of the bars in this Baixo Gavea area that is part of a Mardi Gras-like street party and it's unlike anything you've probably ever seen if you're from the US. You grab a drink, spill out into the street, try to samba with strangers that don't speak English very well, and repeat several more times till you hit up all the bars on the block. B.G. is not only the bar in the midst of this madness that I remember most clearly, but it's the one that had the quickest bathroom/bar lines and that's a big deal when you're at this amazing street party. You just have to go to understand.

Then you've got all these people hanging out at the corners around. It's madness on the weekends. Unfortunately I do not speak Portuguese well, but my friends told me that sometimes you can see local celebs there. So in generally the wait is crazy, and non-vegetarian friendly. But you can have a good meal there for sure.
