Best. Gelato. In. Rome. Perhaps in life? The verdict is still out. All I know is I haven't stopped thinking about it. What happened was... I was coming down the road having just finished some really subpar gelato. I thought, "What I really need after that gelato is some gelato." And then I saw some people happily strolling with tantalizing cones piled high with creamy swirls. That's how I found Quinto. It's a tiny spot located in a really cool neighborhood behind Piazza Navona. The staff is friendly, the prices are amazing, and the menu is posted in the widest variety of languages I've ever seen in one restaurant. Anyone who knows anything about gelato knows that the best gelato is stored out of sight in metal containers with lids, which is exactly what Quinto does (so you know it's legit). This preserves the quality of the gelato and shows that the shop takes pride in its craft rather than just trying to show off flashy displays and artificially bright colors. Like Santa Claus, you don't need to see the gelato to know that it's pure and good. You simply have to believe in it, and the magic will take place. I tried the pistachio first. Then I tried the banana and cherry. Each flavor is fresh and tasty, and the creamy consistency is divine. The portions are the most perfectly indulgent sizes. They'll also top you off with some whipped cream and a wafer cookie. I would come here every day for the rest of my life if that were an option. Year after year, visit to Rome after visit to Rome, I keep coming back to Quinto. It's an institution, it has been here since my very first trip to Rome 25 or so years ago, and it has kept up its quality and reasonable prices. Ice creams are great but the real highlight are shaved ice made with fresh fruit. Also the combinations of ice cream, shaved ice and fruit are all delightful. Service is cheerful and pleasant! Lots of celebrities have been here but small profile and good prices keep it homey and somehow not crazy busy!! What wonderful service and a unique variety of product options. You are unable to look into the case and see the gelato prior to purchasing but there are lists on the wall in several languages, allowing you to choose flavors of your choice. Hubby had caramel and pistachio and I had mint chip and nutella. The owner put a wafer cookie in each along with whipped topping. The gelato was great quality but I was a bit taken aback with the nutella flavor, as it was like straight-up nutella...no gelato...and it took up most of my cup. Be advised that you may want to ask for a very small amount of this flavor, as it is very rich and would be better as a topping. You can get a (cheap) smoothie with fresh fruit made before your eyes and a panini and both be happy. That said, the smoothie I got was only okay--but I felt good drinking it and getting some "real" food for a change while in Italy! This was located across from our B&B, so needless to say we got gelatos from Quinto every day. (And on one occasion, twice a day.) Pistachio and yogurt were my favorite flavors (pistachio has little specs of the actual nut in it!). Beware of the nutella flavor - it's so thick that it's almost indistinguishable from actual nutella. Really affordable, and portions are generous! read more

Located just next to Piazza Navona, Quinto serves some of the best smoothies and fruit salads in Rome, including those with tropical fruit. Fruit is freshly cut in front of the customer. They also have ice creams, good but not exceptional, frozen yogurt, and prepare delicious cups mixing them with fruit. I've you've heard about Giolitti but don't like big crowds, try Quinto instead. Like Giolitti, it's one of the oldest gelateria's in Rome and their gelato is absolutely amazing. We tried so many Gelato places and Quinto was by far our favorite! For €3 you get a chocolate dipped cone, multiple flavors of Gelato heaped on, and whipped cream to top it off. Mediocre gelato shop near Piazza Navona. I had the melon and peach, which were both quite mild in flavour. It was hard to tell the difference between flavours. Gelato was stowed away in freezers out of sight so I couldn't tell how they looked before I got them. Service was decent with English (and many other language) menus and they included cream and a biscuit on top too. I'd check out other gelaterias in the area first. read more
