Strangely enough there wasn't salami, but more like a smoked ham, prosciutto like meat. It tasted great, so what's in a name. Delicious heirloom tomatoes, capers, salami impersonator, cream cheese, capers, pickles and your choice of bread. I had chosen crumpets and regretted that . Not because they weren't delicious, because they were so yummy, but they were also so buttery that I couldn't get the cream cheese to stick and everything I tried to put on the crumpet just slid right off them. I got the bottomless cup of coffee and I must say, this is really good coffee and the refills kept coming also. I love the atmosphere in here and there are so many great choices on the menu. If I ever come back tot Auckland, I will definitely stop by this place again.

The Prospect of Howick has stood proudly on the corner of Howick's main drag Picton Street for many…read moremany years, and during this time has endured a number of different guises. For years, the corner bar was called Mainstreet, and would be the place young people would flock to on a Thursday or Friday night to have their butts unceremoniously grabbed while they danced to Justin Timberlake's first solo album awkwardly remixed. Thankfully this place has classed up a bit over the past few years and created the much nicer GBS - a restaurant and bar with an awesome outdoor area, much like the popular Mac's and Monteith's branded bars that are so popular nowadays. Having grown up in Howick but no longer living there, heading to GBS can be a bit of hike, but it's also a bit of a special trip, particularly when we have friends that are back over from Melbourne or London or... no, those are the only places people from Howick move. The beer is cheap, the ashtrays are plentiful and the braziers burn hot and bright in winter. The barkeeps also tend to leave us rowdy idiots alone to reminisce about (and sometimes relive) our younger days.

The service here is quite average- its usually pretty busy here so I can understand the staff are sometimes running around in a frenzy- so don't expect killer service. It's always good coming in a group as you can always amuse yourselves to pass the time. I was here a few nights ago with a friend and even though we had to wait ten minutes for a table (it was packed), our food was in front of us after 10-15 minutes. I ordered the surf and turf- this is my favourite main here because you get everything- steak with special sauce and shrimp, vegetables and fries. Their buffalo wings are also excellent! I really couldn't fault these. Ever. As far as dessert goes, an oreo sundae is a must. That sundae is great and for it's price, you can't get much better anywhere else. If you've got a family with a few children and you're looking for an inexpensive meal, I'd try Denny's. They accommodate for a big groups and if a child dines with a paying adult, they eat for free from the kids menu. You really can't get better value than that!

The food is unusually fresh tasting and a step above the vast majority of restaurant food. We eat out a lot at great restaurants, but at the moment there's nowhere else with the quality and value anywhere near that at Giusto. There are plenty of vegan, gluten free and vegetarian options while also providing a fabulous 300gm scotch fillet for a mere $30. Most mains are in the $22-$28 range. The menu has options for everyone, and changes a little each time you go so there's always old favourites and interesting new creations. The wine list is not large, but it's perfectly formed and very good value. Try the vegetarian platter as a starter for 4. It's fabulous, even for carnivores. We have tried the vegetarian, chicken, steak and fresh fish mains, and can recommend them all. The waitress we had on both visits was friendly, knowledgeable and helpful in that making decisions can be tough with so many good choices. Go there and enjoy.
