The school is not accommodating to the kids at all. The lunch lines are extremely long and a lot of the parents pack their kids lunch for that reason. Make a mistake and forget your lunch? Don't think about dropping it off to the office. They rather your kids starve for the rest of the day. No microwave or hot water dispenser for the kids to warm their food from home or bring a cup of noodles. Why? They say because they're kids and they run around which can be a liability? So they want the kids to act like young adults, but they won't allow a microwave or hot water dispenser for food. Sounds ridiculous! All the surrounding schools allow for lunches to be dropped off. Understandable if they don't want DoorDash showing up, but if a parent wants to drop off a forgotten lunch, they should be allowed to. It's not a lot to ask for. Do BETTER quimby oak! read more

Wow, I'm really shocked at all the reviews that scored this school so low. I went here back in 1994-1995 and now my kids attend Quimby. The school has beyond improved since my time there, great gym, awesome wrestling program that has taken 22 league division titles consecutively. My son is an honor roll student, and a part of the wrestling team, it's his first year and he's developed a love for the sport in such a short time. The coaches are tough but they definitely teach technique like no other. I haven't had much run ins with the front office because I've never needed to so far with my two sons having gone there. read more

Most of the reviews sound like former students, so don't put much stock in the reviews. School is school. As to the term ghetto, it's subjected. Private schools have monsters in disguise which is worse. Spoiled kids with accessibility to everything. If you're a good parent and provide guidance and structure, your kids will be fine. If your son/daughter like wrestling. Quimby has an awesome wrestling program led by Sam Spangler. They've taken district 6 years running. He's building a legacy here. Proud to have my son here. My two boys have both attended the Lobo School of Innovation at Quimby and grown tremendously through the group oriented instruction. The school within a school allows the limited number of students to interact in age appropriate ways to learn about academic content, but more importantly, learn to work with others. Both my boys have grown as leaders and communicators who are engaged with the learning of the content and driving their own personal growth as team members. They took on leadership roles and flourished in the real world situations. As a former teacher, I know that research does not say good things about homework. The research does say that this kind of learning approach for this age group is unrivaled in its ability to let students grow. Two times I visited the front office, both time left feeling horrible, sad, down, worried... though they, the two woman staff, didn't do or say anything harmful. Just the way they talk, very cold and stuck up. Please keep your kids off of the front office if possible. Am I alone in this? This school is one of three middle schools here in the evergreen school district. It isn't the best, nor the worst school here, but it is a decent school. Quimby has some great teachers and is a clean and friendly environment. There are lots of programs to join including a variety of sports, and also extra help programs such as LIFFT. On the other hand, the school can be a little bit, as some may call it "ghetto". Kids can be very rude here and always getting into trouble. Lots of kids don't follow rules, resulting in detention and such. I gave Quimby Oak Middle School a 3 because it can be a rough school, but also a great one at the same time. read more

This school is beyond terrible. We came from another state in the middle if my find 8th grade year, the moment he walked in the office the staff was soooo rude to him. Old women and men (the front staff and asst principal) being condescending and utterly respectful to a 13 year old whom they've never met before. If this was the only thing I've seen there I probably wouldn't have pulled him out to home school him, but it applies to any child who walks in the office. My son just finished 2 years here and what an incredible experience it was. Love the professionalism of ALL staff and the support they provide their students. It was a tough end of 8th grade with distant learning but they made it work. Loved attending sports events and after school activities. My child was involved in wrestling, basketball and band. My child really enjoys attending Quimby Oak Middle School and has nothing but positive feedback to share as a first year student (7th grade). They say that first impressions are lasting ones...and if we hold true to that, well then, this school based on first impressions, has NO CLASS! From the moment that you step foot in the office, there is no proper welcome and you wait literally for minutes before anybody notices you are there even when they are sitting at their desks literally doing NOTHING! The Secretary, Mrs. Pinter, an old prick who dresses WAY TOO YOUNG for her age, is NEVER CORDIAL and RUDE. She is never welcoming and acts as if she is better than all when in reality she is nothing but an old hag. She is unprofessional when her help is seeked and when she ATTEMPTS to do her job, she FAILS at it! I recently went to this school to get documentation that was left there for me by someone at the District and low and behold, it wasn't there. Mrs. Pinter stated that no such paperwork was ever left there and wanted to see if she could obtain what i needed. I informed her that she wouldnt be able to help me thus leading me to seek help from the employee at the District, but this old hag believed that she knew what she was doing and gave me paperwork that I DID NOT need and to make it worse, it was ON THE WRONG STUDENT!!! This school never checks ID to see if people are who they say they are and after 8 months of getting documentation at this school and frequently being in their office, she indicates to me that, " i just noticed your name is no where on this students forms. " REALLY? after 8 months you JUST notice??? DAMN! talk about doing your job and doing it correctly eh??? Anyway, when I tried to question her on how they verify that parents are parents of the students they claim, what documentation they look for and what their protocols were, the BITCH placed me on HOLD for literally 5 minutes!!! i figured at this time she was seeking help from someone...low and behold, the principal comes on the phone... He indicates to me that Mrs. Pinter is working under his direction as they JUST DISCOVERED and became aware that there is JOINT CUSTODY in my case and that documentation and paperwork will only be released to the students parents. UMMMM HELLOO???? i've had joint custody for over 10 years now and never had this problem! When i asked him how they verify things and what his protocols were as well, all he kept saying was that Pinter was working under his direction and she is doing as he told her....just as i thought...she's his little BITCH! i then informed him that I was going to make a complaint with the district on how his school is being run, the lack of practicing protocols and how unprofessional he and Pinter were...he had no reply for a moment then stated, "good, go right ahead. " This school would be great if you take out the Principal and the old hag Secretary.. Guess I know now not to send my other kids to this school...NO CLASS, JUST CLOWNS!!! read more

This school isn't all that great as the principals are new. It wasn't the best school, but certainly wasn't the worst. I've had some wonderful teachers who actually teach fairly well (Mrs. Woodley, Mr. Haggett, Mrs. Blightman, Mrs. O'Brien) and some who weren't so great. I am not particularly fond of some of the aps here, but it's whatever. The school went down when Mr. Barber retired. Even though he was strict, the school felt a lot safer. This review is based on the front office ladies. I witnessed 2 older Caucasian ladies in the front being rude to the kids. All they had to do was role their eyes, practically. Then, a Hispanic parent went and asked for a staff member in broken English and one of the ladies kept staring at him as if he was from another planet. I gave this school one star because of the way the Principal Mr Bond, or the AP Mr Barber (I really do get those two mixed up, they are so much alike, no joke) treat parents. Mr Bond isn't always irritable but there's often a factor of underlying orneriness in his demeanor. So, in all fairness most of the teachers are good teachers, and this is not reflected in my rating. I wanted to give them zero stars due to the fact that I am not particularly fond of this Principal, or his AP buddy, but it wasn't an option. The few teachers that I've not liked aren't worth mentioning and I'll chalk it up to personalities. But, it's funny that they are the same teachers that I hear kids making fun of (especially two in particular, I won't mention any names). The A.P.'s Mrs Juarez, Mr Brengard, and Ms. Stevens-Radle are great, and very helpful. The nursing staff Mrs Quick & medical assistant Mrs Jeffrey have been a huge help, as I have a diabetic child attending QO. My kids favorite teachers are currently, or have been Mr Luna, Mr Ross, Ms Stracke, Mr Bocca, Ms Villa and Mr Stevens. Actually, my kids have liked most of their teachers. I have one more child that will attend Quimby Oak this coming school year 2011-2012. She is great kid, a little shy and very sweet. I hope my daughter is assigned a good PE teacher that doesn't yell, or play favorites. Actually, Ms Boyle was one of Nathan's favorite teachers period! However, this teacher chose all of the basketball players automatically, to be on the Volley Ball team . . WTHeck? Everyone else had to try out to be on the VB team. Had I known that the basketball players would have an automatic in, I wouldn't even have had my son do this bogus try-out for Q.O.'s Vollyball team. How unfair, what are you thinking. This isn't good for the kids, it's all about the WIN. . .what a shame. . . what are you trying to teach them? My son was so sad, but didn't want me to say anything. This teacher is obviously not may favorite!!! I'm just hoping that she didn't do this because I have bad blood with the Principal Mr Bond, and AP Barber. . . However, I do believe that's why folks. . . Bond/Barber and I had a yelling match when my son almost died on his playground, due to an insulin overdose, two fire trucks and an ambulance showed up, it was serious. Then it got worse when I tried to have the back gate area painted for drop off only. . .which I brought up to Bond, and he told me to go through DOT. So, I did then he didn't like what they suggested so he put a nix to it. So, that was the cincher folks, Bond was pissed at me for doing that and it has been bad ever since. . . Silver lining; My son now plays Football for EVHS, as a linemen. . . can't wait to see him play, he is so excited about it. I never saw him feel excited about anything at Q.O., except his teacher Mr Ross's class. Nathan really likes Mr Ross (presentense), Michael liked Ms. Villa, I liked them both. Nathan did like Ms Boyle until she did that yucky thing which allowed the basketball team to not have to try out to be on the volleyball team. I mean really, does anyone else see this as a problem? What she did made him see her in a whole different light. But honestly, if it hadn't been for Gina Jaurez, my time there would have been awful. . . a real nightmare. However, the Principal hasn't been very pleasant at times, come to mention it (although my son Nathan said he really liked Mr Bond). Mr. Bond, and Mr Barber both yell at the kids (I don't really blame them), and can be cavalier with parents at times (this is where my complaint comes in). Maybe the Principal just needs a pina colada and a vacation to Kokomoe. Where is Kokomoe anyway? I want to go to Kokomoe, too. Who knows, maybe I'd be the same way if I'd been the Principal for almost half a century! Though, I do believe that most of the the teachers at QO deserve a better rating, minus a few of the PE teachers, (we love Mr Luna, love, love, love him) my experience with the Principal hasn't been pleasant. Honestly, if I were only rating the teachers/AP's that I mentioned, I would give them 4-5 stars. I know quite a few people who are choosing different schools over this one, Chaboya, Leyva, even middle schools on the East side. . .August Boger, and now they've chosen Mt Pleasant H.S, and Silver Creek H.S, even though they were in the option areas, which means they get to choose their school. I guess I'm not the only one who's had this experience. . . I've never had this experience at any school other then this one. . Gina Juarez should be the Principal, or Brenngard, because they did more then both of those guys put together the whole time I was there. Juarez and Brenngard have a way of making you feel heard, and when you leave their office you feel like your glad you spoke with them, not the case with Bond, or Barber, neither of these two have finesse. I wish they had a no star rating!!!!!!!! My son Kelvin and Kenny have been going to this school for the last several years. Now Kenny is the only one left but he just graduated. Thank God he does not go there anymore. First of all we all seen the jeans kids are wearing these days. They are half way down to there knees but my son Kenny was wearing the same thing but he had his pants pulled up because he he had a belt on. Mr. Barber is the vice principal for those who do not know would always pick on him. He got detention for having his pants sag just a little bit. I told him if I were to stand with him for an hour during lunch time at the school that we would have to send every child into detention but his answer was that Kenny was just directly in front of him and that there were also another two students that got detention that but not his two friends that were sagging also and were next to him. Great job and answer Mr. Barber. We are not done yet Mr. Barber. Just this last week the school was preparing for graduation. I was so excited more than my son was because he does not have to go to that school anymore. Kenny and six of his other friends were celebrating at another school during closing hours. They had a bottle of white wine and were drinking. I did not condone what they did nor was I very happy. As a concerned parent I handled the situation and reprimanded him for this very bad decision he chose. When this happened we got a phone call from the police telling us what happened and that we were to come and pick up Kenny. When we got there all the boys were held for questioning and there were no girls in sight. There were four girls and they were really intoxicated. The three boys were fine but were held for questioning and a breathalyzer test when the girls were just released even though they were really intoxicated. I finally found out that one of the girls mother was friends with Mrs. Stevens-Radal so the police and Mrs. Stevens-Radal released them without punishment. My son and his friends graduation priveleges were revoked but they made it seem like they were making a big exception by letting them walk the stage. The boys trips to Great America were taken away and all other activities but to this day we have not received a refund for the payment we made. My son was suspended for the rest of the year and when I found that out I told my wife to call and try to talk to Mr. Barber or the principal but they said they were too busy to talk and that we would have to make an appointment at a later time. These two gentlemen if you can call them that are just the principal and the vice principal. Not the president of the United States. To this day I am still angry with this situation and angry with the higher ranking people involved that are suppose to take care of our children. I am a General Sales Manager for a respectable company that handles millions of dollars a month and if something like this would happen I would be all over it. I just want everyone to choose there schools wisely because this is your child that will be attending this school if you choose so and please review the personel carefully. Mr. Barber, Mrs. Stevens-Radal, and Mr Principal please be careful in making your decisions in the future. As for the field trip money that was charged please keep it for training classes for yourselves or if it is not enough please just mail it back to us because we do not want to step foot on that campus any longer. What a two years it has been with this school. As for all the teachers they have been great in what they do and I commend them on their everyday dedication. Staff here are very rude, I know I wouldn't send my kids to a school like this. Administration is on a power trip and is a combination of incompetent and overpaid. Transparent California shows administration making good money yet when you go to the school they are certainly not worth your money. I will be complaining to the school board about this. Do yourself a favor and send your kids elsewhere if you can like a private school if you have the money for it that way there will be accountability for staff and administration. There is a payscale showing they get paid based on how long they have been around, not how well they do and getting rid of the bad apples is difficult because they have so much job security so they feel entitled to behave anyway they want without accountability. They are among the highest compensated in both the country and county yet I feel they strongly under delivered even falsely advertised. They care more about looking good on paper with test scores then actually making sure students are safe and nurtured. If I could give zero stars I would. Such unprofessional conduct. If I were to behave the way they do at my job I would be fired on the spot. The attendance secretary with blonde hair is the rudest secretary I have ever had the displeasure of being around. She puts an intense effort to be as condescending and rude as she can. It really shows how badly administration and the staff have such poor people skills despite their high pay. Considering the cost of living and the taxes we pay to this district we are certainly not getting our money's worth. Much of the money we spend goes to pensions and administration and is wasted on things we don't need. We didn't need an expensive multi million dollar library that I went to twice in my time here. Once when the then principal Philip Bond introduced us to it and then once only before for a powerpoint presentation in my English class. If you really want to help your child give school supplies directly to the students and teachers as well as volunteer your time when you can they won't spend your money efficiently or effectively here. Their enrollment has been declining. I believe the causes are multifactorial but it can be blamed on poor quality administrators and rude staff. read more

I'm actually attending the school right now. I think that the school isn't bad. I think the staff here is great! But I think some of the students here ruin the experience. Its been 1-2 months since the school has started. I had a significant experience on my first day. I was in a line, waiting to get my PE clothes for the PE class, and an 8th grader walked up to me and said: "Move you f**king sevie." (Sevie is a word that 8th graders call 7th graders). I didn't want to start any kind of fight with these boys, so I let them in front of me. The started talking about inappropriate things and made looked at girls. I was disgusted, but I was scared that If I said anything, I might get involved, so I said nothing. As i said before, the staff is great, but it is the students, that affect the enviorment. If your child stays clear of these things, then he or she should look forward to a good school year. read more

The teachers are good. The students are really motivated. I like the Assistant Principals. Just feel the Principal Mr. Bond is rude and domineering. He does not treat the parents on equal footing. Although there is litter everywhere (no kidding) I enjoy the environment of Quimby. The teachers are great, really, but Mr.Barber was a hassle to talk to. I really didn't like his behavior at Quimby and I can gladly say that many others too. His retirement is sad but also a joy for the kids attending Quimby in the future. The electives are really a disappointment. BEWARE OF ELLEN ARAGON. That woman is a terrible teacher and kids in geometry are forced to have her as a teacher since quimby is too cheap to have at least two geometry classes. I have had many problems with her because of her quick grading. The woman has made so many mistakes while correcting and never let me talk to her after school saying 'it's too late' The problem was that she wasn't available during lunch and I had her class AFTER break. Even the administrators at EVHS isn't this bad. Overall, I wouldn't bring my kids to this school. Not today. read more
