Native Grill and Meats - Navajo taco

    Native Grill and Meats

We found this spot on Yelp and I'm so glad we stopped! We got the fry bread (sandwich) and it completely surprised us. I usually think lamb is too gamey, but this wasn't at all. When I brought it out, my husband thought it was beef at first because of how mild it tasted. The portions are huge. HUGE! One taco was seriously the size of a medium pizza and somehow we still finished it. If you're taking it to go like we did, eat it within 5 to 10 minutes so it doesn't get soggy. They also have free broth and honey inside which was such a nice touch and made it even better. Dipping the fry bread in the broth was a nice touch. Like a lighter consomé. Try it with the honey, too! We did with the remaining fry bread as a bit of a dessert. The best part though was the woman working there. She was so kind, answered all my questions, explained everything, and even gave me a magazine about Gallup. If you want something authentic and filling, definitely stop here.

I wanted to try everything but settled for the lamb stew and the navajo burger. Like other reviews stated, portions really are HUGE. The broth was even self serve in a hot pot out on a counter which is pretty cool. Super nice on a 10° day. I wasn't sure but it seems like native cooking is very light on additional seasonings as my food wasn't as salty as I usually prefer. Which I guess might be a turn off to some but if that's what traditional cooking is then... yeah. The navajo burger actually had enough flavor from the patty. I loved the fry bread. The broth was amazing, I just wish it were a little more salted but that's something easily fixed. Oh I almost forgot. I guess my brain blocked out the trauma of it but New Meixco is supposedly well known for their chilis and this place has some fire chili. literally. roasted green chilis. but yeah it was painful. I couldn't take it. Definite must for any big spice head. Highly recommend broadening your horizons, trying something new, and supporting a locally owned business!

When we arrived at 6:30p the parking lot was packed - and on a Wednesday! We waited for about 20 minutes and then were seated. We started with the spinach and artichoke dip, which is served with warm baguette slices - perfection. For entrees we had the meatball linguine and the chicken Parmesan- meatballs are house- made and were so flavorful, chicken on the parm was crispy on the outside and juicy on the inside. Entrees are served with a side salad and their ranch was to die for- so thick and creamy. For dessert we had the chocolate gelato, which was the cherry on top of the meal. Yum! The place stayed busy until we left around 8 - a big party was waiting to be sat. The staff are very hard workers - they were busting their butts all over the restaurant for the duration of our meal. Our server (we didn't get his name, unfortunately) was wonderful. Highly recommend, and if we're ever back in Gallup, we'll definitely grab another meal here!

We were served undercooked pizza--twice--and it completely ruined our dinner…read more On the very first bite, I could feel that the dough was sticky and raw. When I checked the pizza, it was clearly undercooked, so we sent it back. We expected it to come back properly cooked, but unfortunately that wasn't the case. When the pizza was brought out the second time, it was still doughy and undercooked. I took photos of it, and they show multiple different slices--all of which had the same raw, gummy texture across the entire slice. This was not just one bad piece. Because of this, we didn't even get a chance to actually eat the pizza. That was our dinner, and we ended up leaving without being able to eat it. What made the situation worse was how it was handled. The manager insisted it was "ranch sauce" and claimed the pizza was cooked thoroughly, which is simply not accurate based on both the texture and appearance. I was also told I was the only person to complain, as if that somehow made the issue invalid. Regardless, we were served undercooked food--twice. They offered a $5 discount on a $21 pizza that we couldn't even eat, which did not feel like a fair resolution. Very disappointing experience overall--not just because of the food, but because the issue was dismissed instead of taken seriously.

I met some friends at Oasis for lunch... and was impressed after reading the menu. Everything sounded terrific. But that's where it turned... weird. A friend ordered chicken shawarma on a pita (a $13 entree) and it was the perfect portion size for me. I asked if they could accommodate my celiac disease and make that dish for me without the pita (so, to be clear, I would be paying the same amount but receiving less food)... and they said no - if I wanted that, then I would have to order the full $23 chicken shawarma entree. Ridiculous. If I could endure the pita touching the meat (and other ingredients) without getting sick, then I would have just ordered it as-is and taken it off the pita... but I cannot do that. And being in the middle of a roadtrip, I didn't want a huge meal that would leave me with a bunch of leftover food. If I offer to pay more for my meal than I am getting, then take it and be happy... but do not tell me I need to order the bigger entree that costs more. Weird. And not to mention, celiac is a recognized disability under the ADA... so maybe try to accommodate that next time. Oasis also has some other strange rules that they enforce. Despite the place looking like an old In-N-Out Burger (drive-thru window and all), they have signs posted all over the place that "this is a dine-in restaurant." I'm ok if that's the image they want to try to portray... but my friend had ordered his food to go... and as we sat there, he later changed his mind and decided to eat some of it before we left... and then a female (an owner?) came running over and told him he couldn't eat out of the to-go container! What?!? I could understand if they had nice plates and utensils... or if the place was even remotely fancy, but they brought him a flimsy cheap-looking plastic tray and made him put his food in the tray to eat out of it. So so weird. Let people eat their food that they already paid for in peace. If you like being told a bunch of rules and what you can and cannot do by a fast-food place, then this is the place for you. **TWO STARS**
