I know I've said that there is no point to go anywhere else for subs when a place like the Hogback Deli exist, except I live around the corner from Quick Chek, and Hogback is about 15 minutes away. So, if time not of the essence, the Hogback is the place to go. But if you're in a rush, Quick Chek isn't bad.
Anyway, based on the sandwich alone, this place, along with Wawa, come in around a 3 star rating. I could possibly be talked into an extra star is for cleanliness, variety, and, well, convenience.
I am a huge fan of the computerized ordering station, to my shame, possibly for a ridiculous reason. Many years ago, when I was a teenager, I was out by myself in Princeton and ordered a sub at a pizzeria, and I wanted pepperoni and American cheese (and oil and vinegar, lettuce, tomato, salt, pepper, and oregano). I realize that's not a standard sandwich, and I've broaden my horizons since then, but Italian joints generally are very well stocked with both pepperoni and American cheese, and I never had a problem getting that kind of sub before.
"You wanna a what?" the guy behind the counter said, incredulously.
"Pepperoni and American cheese," I repeated.
His nose wrinkled in disgust. "That's not a real sandwich!" he declared.
I was new to ordering food by myself without an adult with me, but no one ever judged me so openly before, and I didn't like it. I felt like putting my head down and leaving, but I dug my heels in and said, "Do you have pepperoni and American cheese?"
"Well, of course," he said, venomously.
"Can I get a sandwich that way, even if it isn't real?"
He turned in disgust and started making my sandwich.
I never went back there. And, to be honest, even though I'll happily eat other deli items now, I generally won't order a sub from a pizzeria, because of my experience in Princeton. The computerized ordering stations allow us the privacy of ordering whatever type of sandwich we want, without the condescension. A giant leap for humanity!
But back to this Quick Chek: I was impressed with the size of the store, and the seating area is a really nice touch. I've found Wawa sandwiches to be inconsistent -- for instance, the store on Quakerbridge uses a lot less meat than the one on 130, at least in my experience; the meat and cheese disparity may be the case for Quick Chek too. Anyway, I definitely received skimpy turkey sandwich at this particular QC, and there may have been one piece of cheese on the entire sub. But, the bread was good, and the extras were fresh, and, I was ravenous.
In a pinch (and aren't we often in pinches?), I'd definitely go again - they have a good selection of food made to order, and I might be inclined to try something else. read more
