Bring a book or a picnic or an easel; when I was there I saw people doing all three looking content with their surroundings. I stopped by while walking between the great dining deck at the back of Food Bazaar and the cluster of Red Hook winery/brewery/cideries in the Barrel Yard. It was a nice sidetrack in between but could have been equally nice if I got something to go on either end and brought it here to enjoy. Next time I'm in the area, I'll be back.

On the return ferry to Pier 6 (around 5-6 PM), the worker responsible for ushering passengers on and off was extremely rude and unprofessional. He was yelling at passengers, including families with young kids, and went so far as to separate children from their parents simply because the kids had bicycles and the parents didn't. Watching small children being forced away from their families was stressful and upsetting for everyone nearby. Instead of calmly explaining procedures or ensuring safety, the staff member barked orders and treated riders with disrespect. Governors Island is supposed to be a fun and family-friendly destination, but this kind of treatment is unacceptable. Families should never feel unsafe or disrespected when taking public transportation, and staff should be trained to handle passengers with patience and care, not hostility. I hope management takes this seriously and trains their ferry staff better. Until then, I would warn anyone with kids to be prepared for a very negative and unsettling ferry experience.

I had never been there before, it was a nice day, it was a nominal fee if my recollection serves me right, I decided it was something to do. So we boarded the boat and set sail, it was a relatively short trip and we got about 50 minutes until the next back to Brooklyn. I got to walk around, eat at good food truck , view some sights, take some pictures, and learn some history all in I didn't have the luxury of going back this past summer, but hopefully next summer I can make my way back there.

The Salt Marsh Trails is an easy and enjoyable hike, perfect for beginners or anyone looking for a…read morerelaxing walk in nature. I'd consider it a level-one hike with beautiful views along the way. It's just over a mile, making it very doable for kids and teenagers as well. Before this, we tried some of the harder trails nearby, which I'd recommend doing with a partner for safety. This trail is a great choice if you're new to hiking or just want a peaceful, scenic experience. Also the Salt Marsh Nature Center is nearby for bathroom and educational on plants and the insects that are around.

You can relax and watch the sea birds. I walked in and out of the trails for an hour. Very high grassy areas so check for ticks. We don't have very many scenic walking areas here so enjoy this. I loved it and will be going back during the week. Great exercise and if it's not enough you can walk around Marine Park afterwards.

The pier itself is very clean and we were practically the only people there. The entrance has a cool gate and then you walk a bit to get to the end where you are met with a very close encounter to the water and have the most amazing view of the New York skyline. Side notes : The breeze from being next to the water can be a little chilly so unless it is summer months I would recommend bringing a jacket. There is also a little greenery area where you can let your kids loose nearby along with a playground so if you have little ones be sure to check it out! Parking can be tricky but there are apartments across the small street where they have visitor parking and then you can walk to the pier.

Inside, you'll learn about the different insects and wildlife you might encounter, which makes the hike even more engaging. They also post a schedule of activities like hiking and camping programs right on the door. A big plus is that they have restrooms available, something you won't easily find nearby. I really enjoyed seeing the turtles, snakes, stick insects, and more. Kids will absolutely love it here, so it's a great spot to bring the little ones. On top of that, the center offers beautiful views of the water and surrounding trails.

Total time to walk the squared loop around White Island -- maybe twenty minutes (in flip-flops mind…read moreyou) and total number of humanoids encountered -- just two. Two, in the entire vacinity from the main road, around the public services building (closed due to Covid-19) and into the salt marsh trails, and don't ask why -- as it's beyond my comprehension. Not did we encounter a pest of any genius - family- species, not winged not crawling not hopping or dive bombing. As I entered thru the gate and past the sign of rules I figured the following. "Skeeters don't take to my blood at all and anywhere and the dog is immune to all insect bites and stings (true for all Rhodesians), let's get it!" If I were to be swarmed by anything, it was beauty, fresh sweet salty air and two types of butterflies orange/black and white and a few hummingbirds. It was as if snow began to fall in the form of fluttering wings and hums of wanting to stay and never to fly away from here.

Governors Island New York, NY 10004…read more Located below the southern most point of Manhattan is a 172-acre recreational island that does not have access to any automobiles. All visitors may reach the island via ferry boat only. While there are multiple ways to reach Governors Island, I choose the Battery Maritime Building on South Street because it is the most accessible from the Port Authority Bus Terminal and/or Penn Station. All visitors are each required to purchase a $5 round trip paper ticket from a kiosk or anyone can scan a QR code to download a ticket to their iPhone. (There is no fee on the weekends before 11:00 AM.) As you exit the gangway, an Information Booth is located only footsteps away. Volunteers will help you navigate your way; a complimentary map of Governors Island is provided. As you explore Governors Island, take advantage of several recreational and dining amenities. Visitors may rent bicycles or quadracycles from Blazing Saddles or from a Citi Bike kiosk. If you need a spot to sit or lie down, take advantage of the red hammocks at Hammock Grove. You shouldn't have a problem finding a resting spot because there are 50 hammocks. Slide Hill has four slides for all age groups. Three of the slides are not as long and appeal to a younger audience. The fourth slide will definitely draw attention to teenagers and the older crowd. This curvy, thrill seeking  57-foot slide is the longest in New York City. Climb your way to the pinnacle of Overlook Hill for the most serene, tranquil views of the city. Witness the Verrazano Bridge, Statue of Liberty and the Manhattan Skyline. If you don't feel like walking to Overlook Hill, there are multiple beaches around the island to catch these breathtaking views. Attend Collective Retreats for an overnight glamping extravaganza. The inside of the canvas tents have full size beds and are practically hotel rooms. I gave the Ferry only 4 stars bc like any metro in NYC the announcements r garbled & u can't understand it. If ur a tourist & not familiar w/ stops get a map or take a photo of stops to be clear. I live in Manhattan, but had business in Brooklyn via subway train but on the way back didn't want 2b on a smelly stuffy train so I took the Ferry a refreshing 15 minute ride back to the city. It's basically, only 3 stops b4 E. 34th St then L. I. C Queens is the last stop. It's a great trip too for a family outing across the East River. There's also one on the Westside- Hudson River going twds Lincoln Pk -Hoboken NJ, to Frank Sinatra restaurant. I've used them all & I'm very content.
