I was clearly told that my insurance would cover the visit. I actually made my decision to go there based on that information, because another facility had told me that I would have to pay out of pocket. When I arrived, I asked again at check-in whether my insurance covered the visit, and I was again told that it did. Before leaving, I also specifically confirmed this once more. At no point was I informed that, despite the insurance being accepted, I could still receive a very large additional bill. Today I received a bill for $1,333. When I contacted customer service, I was told that the total charge for the visit was around $2,000. This was a very basic visit for a sore throat. I had a throat swab and a COVID test, and did not receive any significant treatment or procedure. I understand that medical care in the U.S. can be expensive, and I understand that insurance does not necessarily mean everything is free. However, there is a huge difference between being told multiple times that your insurance covers the visit and being properly informed that you may still be responsible for $1,333. As someone who is relatively new to the U.S. healthcare system, I relied on the information your staff gave me. If I had been told beforehand that I could receive a bill of this size, I would have made a completely different decision about where to seek care. A $1,333 bill for a visit that essentially consisted of someone examining my throat, performing a throat swab, and doing a COVID test is an outrageous amount of money. It is simply not a reasonable or realistic cost for many people to afford, especially when patients are already dealing with the high cost of healthcare. The price is extremely difficult to justify for the services I received, and the fact that I was not informed beforehand that I could be responsible for such a large amount makes this experience even more frustrating. I sincerely hope the hospital reviews how financial responsibility is communicated to patients, because people deserve to know what they may actually be charged before agreeing to receive care.
