My grandma spent the last few months of her life at Delmar Gardens, and our family will always be…read moregrateful for the people who cared for her there.
This was such an incredibly difficult season for our family, but so many of the nurses, aides, therapists, and staff treated my grandma with patience, kindness, and dignity. She had dementia and could definitely be stubborn and sassy, but they learned her personality, her likes and dislikes, and how to make her feel comfortable and safe. They laughed with her, talked with her, cared for her, and treated her like a person rather than just another patient.
Our family was there constantly, especially toward the end of her life, and we were able to see firsthand how much compassion many of the staff had for her. They celebrated her 82nd birthday with us, helped make her days a little brighter, and showed our family kindness during some of the hardest moments we have ever experienced.
Delmar Gardens became more than just the place my grandma stayed. It became the place where we spent so much of our final time with her, made memories with her, loved on her, and eventually said goodbye to her. Losing her has been absolutely heartbreaking, but I will forever be thankful for the people who helped care for her along the way.
Thank you to everyone who loved on our grandma, put up with her sass, made her smile, kept her comfortable, and treated our family with compassion. Those things may have seemed small in the moment, but they meant more to us than you will ever know.
