I got interested in archery kind of by accident. When I was in middle school, we had a…read moreShakespearean festival, which included archery among other things. The bows they had were these cheap compounds (with the wheels) intended for children... which in fairness, we were. Well that, and one step up is five times the cost. At some point many years after, I found this place. I was excited to try my hands at archery once again. Even though this place is a little out of the way, I still venture out here when I want to have a go of being a sort of Robin Hood, only one who is not nearly as good of a shot. I. Cost - Their rates are extremely reasonable for what you get. Shooting on the range is $12/hour if you bring your own equipment, and only $14 to borrow theirs. This cost includes instruction too! This is not a private lesson, but they will help you along the way with stance, aim, draw, and other such basics. II. Staff - their staff are some of the nicest, most patient people I have met! Whether they are telling you the 1st time or 101st time to bring your hand to your ear, they are just as patient and calm. Also, during my time shooting, adjusting the draw weight (on the compound) as well as the sight to my ideal levels was a non issue. III. Range - The range is pretty nice! It is well lit, fairly spacious, and they have targets at two different distances, although, I couldn't tell you what they are. I can however tell that the shorter distance is great for beginners... not so far that it becomes discouraging, but close enough that it is fairly challenging. When you are shooting, do be careful of obstacles like pipes or columns... but if you stay in your lane, you should be fine. IV. Equipment - Out of the bows you are able to rent there are recurves (think Robin Hood) and Compound bows (with wheels). I am fond of the latter, but must say the Genesis bow (make of compound) is not my favorite thing in the world. The reason for this is (don't quote me on this) compounds have a let off in weight when fully drawn. The Genesis bows do not (at least not a very significant one). I will not penalize this place for that because these are fairly cheap (~$100), durable, easily adjustable, and according to online markets a great entry level bow for people of all ages. When it comes to equipment, think of it in parallel with bowling . If you are just there to bowl for a bit of fun, you have entry level equipment (balls, shoes) that are durable, and good for those who don't take the sport too seriously. Same thing here, the bows and arm-guards aren't spectacular, and there is no mechanical release provided. If you come to shoot for an hour for fun, you probably don't care that much. As for me, I'd like to keep it casual for now... but even if I end up taking archery more seriously, I will not hesitate at returning to this place to practice!

Sandra found out that she was left-eye dominant and she's right handed. This wasn't a problem for my dad, Instead of the eye-patch I suggested and bought, he actually took Sandra to the outside range and taught her how to shoot the righty bow as a lefty. Unbelievably she was able to actually group her arrows and then adjust her sights to acutely hit the 3D targets. Now we are both excited to see where we/her can go with our archery night/day out together.

I put down a $40 deposit for the time spot for me and three guests to go. I live over an hour away from Axes and Archery, so I even went as far as researching other things we could do in the area once we were done that day. I received an email today (May 12th) saying that my event was coming up and to please have guests fill-out the safety/registration form online (copied and pasted from email: "Your Archery event is coming soon. We are "Axcited" to provide an excellent time for your group. Let our "Axperts" know if anything has changed concerning your reservation, and we can make sure your time here is one to remember. Don't forget to wear closed-toed shoes and sign the waiver for each Axe thrower/Archery Shooter.") Later in, my friend pointed out to me that on their website, it said that the Archery lanes were being upgraded (copied and pasted: "We are upgrading our Archery lanes, and in order to do so, all lanes will be temporarily closed. We expect to reopen them on June 1st. Thank you!"). I told her that no one had reached out to me all month to tell me about it and that I just received an email from them today saying my event was coming up, and that it made no mention of it being canceled. But still, I was skeptical and sent them a Facebook message explaining that I had an event coming up on Sunday and asked if everything was good to go, and that I just needed 2 of the others in my group to sign the waivers if everything was still in place. I received the reply "Perfect. You're all set then!". I even asked them about the BYOB policies and continued conversing afterward. Later that day, I had a gut feeling that I should make absolutely sure everything was good for us to drive over there for May 15th. I called and the gentleman who answered said that Archery was temporarily closed, that he was sorry, and that we could do Axe throwing if we wanted to instead. Not only am I finding this out three days before our planned day trip, received an email reminder (literally today) for our time spot and waivers, was told through Facebook messenger that I was all set...I had to find out the cancelation myself through getting ahold of them, because no one called/emailed/texted during the entire month that I had this planned. The only nice thing I could say was that the guy I spoke to on the phone at the end was apologetic and issued me a refund immediately. I'm extremely disappointed at the lack of communication. If I didn't triple check the website, we would have had zero idea that our plans were canceled and drove over there. I'm so upset that the day plans I made for other things to do in the Salem, NH area are also out the window, because they were centered around our Archery time slot. My friends and I didn't make any back-up plans or come up with any other ideas either, because we were blissfully unaware that no one would notify us if something happened.

Expansive space Variety of options…read moreConvenient in Warwick Tangy's offers 26 lanes of 20-yard target shooting, a 3D range with animal targets, lessons, birthday parties, adult and youth leagues, and the pro shop with all manner of gear. For reference, they're located in "St. James Plaza" across from CarMax, with a deceptively narrow ground-floor entryway (the facility is upstairs on the second floor - elevator available). The entrance is clearly marked, however. They have two sets of open hours: summer (Tues-Fri 6-9pm, Sat 1-5pm) and winter (Tues-Fri 6-10pm, and Sat/Sun 1-5pm). My family and I managed to get to Tangy's just in time for an hour's range time prior to their 5pm close time on a January Sunday. The place was not exactly full, but certainly in full swing. Several clearly-experienced people were doing target practice with a little extra space to themselves, a group of renters who looked like they were simply enjoying the occasional outing were on a set of lanes, and numerous more serious archers were getting gear adjustments or shopping for new equipment. Two people were on staff helping out, and they had their hands full. Thus, it took about ten minutes for my 4-pack to get lanes and rental equipment, but then we were set up and good to go. Our time went quickly. Range and rental time aren't exactly cheap. All first-timers are strongly encouraged to participate in a $25/person mini-training. Aside from that, adult rental of equipment is $5 for bow/arrows, and $3 for children while a lane will run $18/hour for adults and $13/hour for youth. My family has all shot before, so we were saved the training time and fees, but it was still $78 for a family of four for one hour. However, it's worth mentioning that if you plan to come regularly, many of their frequent guest programs (from 5-hour range time cards to full memberships) offer noticeable discounts. Tangy's tagline is "Where every level of archer feels at home" - to that end, my older son (11) described the experience as challenging but welcoming; my younger son (9) described it as "ultimately awesome." My wife liked that we were given some space to shoot as a family without too much oversight. So there you have it - their story checks out. I'm sure we'll be back in the near future.

We paid $20/person which includes a mini lesson on how to shoot and then about 20 min of shooting time on our own. We came not too long after the shop opened so there weren't many people in there yet. We got 2 whole lanes to ourselves. After you complete the lesson and you come back, I believe it's $18/per half hour There aren't many lanes, so if you have a group larger than 4, it might be a tight fit and might want to call ahead to make sure your and your group will have a lane. Overall it's a lot of fun! Would recommend if you just want to shoot for fun or you're a professional and need a space to practice
