Built in 1970, the Queensway Twin Bridges is the southernmost crossing of the Los Angeles River, connecting downtown Long Beach to Pier J (a man-made peninsula that houses both the Queen Mary and the Carnival Cruise Port). It spans 1,200 feet (not including the approaches) and provides 45 feet of vertical clearance at low tide. This was the first time my wife and I have crossed the bridge to the peninsula since the new Long Beach Amphitheater opened, taking the free Passport bus to cross (one can also walk, as there are pedestrian sidewalks on both sides). We really couldn't get too close to the Amphitheater (it was Day 1 of the Day Trip Festival), so I took a walk to the bridge to take some pictures. There were multiple folks fishing and enjoying the day near it as well.
There are other ways to enter the peninsula:
-- Ocean Blvd Bridge from Long Beach downtown
-- The 710 freeway from Los Angeles
Thus, the Queensway Twin Bridges has been used for filming TV shows and movies when a closed bridge is required. read more
