Where's the best Peking Duck in Sydney?
We were directed here, to Quanjude, where each setting came automatically with the accompaniments of peking duck: scallions, hoisin sauce, cucumbers, pickles. Yes, you are expected to order the duck if you are going to eat here.
Beijing Roast Duck - $118.80/whole; $68.80/half - and they slice it tableside and set it neatly onto a cute duck plate, and serve it in three courses.
Course 1 - the fatty bits with skin and sugar to dip it in
Course 2 - sliced duck with pancakes that you may garnish at will and roll up to eat
Course 3 - salt and pepper fried carcass (as the chef who sliced the duck for us did really well, hardly any meat remained on the bones)
The third course did nothing for me, since there was hardly any meat left on the bones, but I ate a lot of duck. The skin wasn't the crisp sort, but still made for a tasty meal.
I also quite enjoyed the sweet and sour battered and fried fish, which was made in an interesting fashion reminiscent of a porcupine! The beef cubes in another dish was tender and tasty, while the spinach and tofu skin dish was light and healthy feeling, yet satisfying. Even their dumplings were good.
And what's a dinner without a show? A costumed dancer came out from out of the blue and performed a changing mask dance.
