This temple is quaint and cozy, but the headmaster Thay Nhu Hai has a big heart. He is compassionate and caring with all who encounters him. My mom and I first met Thay Nhu Hai when he did the prayer at a family friend's funeral and also the weekly prayers and other traditional death-praying after: once a week for 7 weeks, 49 days, 100 days & deathiversaries. He is very helpful and informative with families who are less knowledgeable about these burial traditions and we like his style of praying. I also later found out that Thay Nhu Hai is friends with the Headmaster at Quang Thien Temple, Thay Minh Dung. I guess it's a small world when it comes to a minority community of Vietnamese Buddhist in southern California. So my mom and I come here a few times a year to visit this little temple and to have tea with Thay Nhu Hai. I appreciate the conversations he has with him because I feel like he provides a very deep and wise moral outlook on life. He is simple enough that even a non-Buddhist can understand and appreciate his profound wisdom. On a few of our visits, we have ran into a few of his other disciples from out of state who have sought out his temple during their visit to California. He clearly made an impression on their lives if they took the time to see him on their vacation. When my mom had her surgeries, Thay Nhu Hai heard about it somehow and he actually reached out to her to ask how she was doing and that he would pray for her quick recovery. I think that is so caring, especially since we aren't even his weekly Sunday disciples. Not to make it sound casual, but in the past I have actually called or texted him to pray for people for me. "Cau An" is praying for wellbeing for the living and "Cau Sieu" is praying for peace for the dead. Thay Nhu Hai is a very benevolent and compassionate individual. I would definitely take my mom to Da Bao Temple more often if it was closer to home, but we always come during New Years during our Temple-hopping routine and a few more times throughout the year. I always love the smaller temples because I feel like they care more.

He always has a great spirit about him, always joyful and welcoming of everyone. All of the volunteers at this temple are great as well. You know the temple is a good one when you see the same familiar faces return week after week to volunteer their time to cook or to clean. This temple is not very big and I think that's part of why I like it so much. It is small and intimate. The garden in the backyard has lots of shade and feels very peaceful. Sometimes I like to just sit out there and enjoy the calm and serene ambiance. If you like vegetarian food, this place is for you. They sell a large variety of dishes, all at very reasonable prices. You can choose to eat there or to-go it home. On big temple holidays (Lunar New Year (Tet), Mother's Day (Le Vu Lan) and Buddha's birthday (Le Phat Dan)), Lien Hoa temple always throws a big celebration, handing out thousands of portions of vegetarian food free! There's the main food (which is usually some type of rice or vermicelli dish), dessert (variety of xoi or che), drinks (including an awesome boba station)! It is always a big event with a great turnout. The temple is open for everyone. Hope to see you there one day!

Buddha statues are displayed everywhere from the front parking to the back. The parking lot is small, for 12-15 cars the most but there are street parking too...can be hectic during holidays. The only thing that makes me feel abit at odd is that religious and politics shouldn't and wouldn't mix or displaced. I don't care which side you're on but when you're at the temple, you're searching for peace and relaxation. Not to discuss politic or to hear about it, especially with the head monk. It makes me lost the respect for the temple.

I don't practice Buddhism, but my mother insisted that I lessen my bad luck this year by bringing me to a temple to "An-Tai-Suay" (this is a verb. I think it means to ask my god "pu-sah" to protect my animal?) I'M TRYING! I'm no regular temple-goer, and I've only been to a few temples in my lifetime...but besides Shi Lai, this one has to be my favorite. It's spacious, peaceful, clean & well kept, beautiful, and full of helpful and friendly staff members who can try to explain things to you even if you don't understand (like me). The smell of incense fills most of the buildings' entrances and it really brought me a sense of peace and serenity. I can't really explain it well, but being here kind of made me feel like I had been lifted away from all of hustle & bustle of my day-to-day life and placed in a zen garden. Today, we wrote our family members names on a small card and hung it on a little lantern among hundreds of lanterns. Along with our names, we wrote/asked for happiness and luck this year, and to keep us safe. Then we went to "An-Tai-Suay" and I think they will be posting/hanging something with my name or something in one of the temple buildings for this lunar year. Although I don't normally go to Temples, this is a place I have really enjoyed being at. I do recommend anyone, buddhist or not, to come here at least once and experience this place. My parents and a couple of their friends decided to build a temple, then when word got out, a lot of people donated money to help build this temple. Then as people started to come, they wanted to build an outdoor kitchen to cook for the poor and unfortunate people and people started to donate rice and vegetables and cooking utensils. Then they started to have people joining the prayer group, both my parents and sister joined. They go to temple to do prayer on special occasions and chat for enlightenment. Before Covid, I always go there every Sunday to help them chopped vegetables to make lunch for the needy people, i mean the poor folks, some ain't even poor, they just go for the free food and the take the offerings, which they not supposed to unless the people managed it says is ok. But I see a lot of greedy people who just take more than they need. Every Sunday, lots of people come to help prepare the food, set up the chairs and tables, wash all the pots and pans, serving trays, clean the area. But now, they're only doing it once in awhile. If you want to donate money, they have these metal boxes by the front entrance and the goddess of mercy. You can also donate rice, cooking oil and vegetables. My family also donated grapefruit and tangerines because we grew them, we do it every harvest. We donated a lot of things too like the incense, rice and cooking oil. Is a good place to go and help out, you can also chat with the monks, they have a book if you don't know the words of the chants. Sometimes the chants can go for hours, but they take breaks and then go back to chanting lol. A good time to go is usually on the weekends. But if you happen to drive by and see the gates are open, then is open. Go pray for good health, for new babies , or for your loved ones who passed away to have a good journey and don't pray to win the lottery or get rich, is not going to work and it might backfire, you might end up even poorer lol Everyone is welcome to come by. One more thing, when they serve free lunch on Sundays, they sometimes sell the food for $5 a box and they sell the pickle vegetables for $5, is really good. They make their own pickled veggies. Is that sour mustard green veggies. Is delicious.

The San Gabriel Buddhist Temple is a small community temple. It's a small sanctuary dropped in a…read morebusy street. There is no religious restrictions so everyone is welcome to come to seek prayers or listen to chants offered by monks. From talking to the "manager" the temple is not open regularly Monday to Friday (but accessible by appointment). There are limited services and events aligned to the lunar calendar 1st and 15th of the month so please contact the temple for hours to access the events or services.
