I lived in Manchester for 10 years and many of the curry houses are better than any in London…read more Kiplings is one of the better ones I have tried. Kiplings is an upmarket restaurant with very polite staff and a relaxed (well behaved!) atmosphere, not a place to go when you are hammered! The food is very good and we get takeaways fairly regularly, which have a discount and make it pretty good value (for London). I'm a fan of the chicken Madras, chicken Biryani, and lamb jalfrezi. The naan are a bit small, so order one each if you are hungry!

Kiplings were able to seat us quickly - perhaps a sign of what was to come. I can't tell if it's my food tastes or the cookery that have altered over the years. Despite really loving this place back then, I did not enjoy my dinner here at all in the slightest. It wasn't terrible, it just wasn't tastyl. The food was too oily, bland, and lacked any omph. My salmon starter had lots of small bones in it, and was oily. The boy disliked the vegetarian dish that the waiter strongly recommended he order over his original choice - again it was needlessly oily. Dad didn't comment either way on his food. The ambiance was a bit dead for my liking, but they did play midi versions of popular Hindi songs Woop. Plus most seriously of all they tricked us with the After Eights. We thought they'd kindly given us an extra one and it was just an empty shell of a packet. The cruelty! I've come out of Kiplings feeling distinctively unhealthy, and slimier that a Florida oil slick.

Visiting London from Chicago and of COURSE we had to try some of the town's famous East…read moreIndian-Pakistani cuisine, but friends' recommendations were all for high-end and/or chain places. So we did some research. Somewhere along the line we found Meraz written up as one of the 12 best Indian restaurants in England. Okay, so we trek over to the East End (pretty wild neighborhood that we enjoyed) for dinner at Meraz. My husband was disappointed not to find a particular dish on the menu, but the waiter didn't hesitate to offer to have the kitchen whip it up special for him. My husband also went a little wild ordering all sorts of appetizers and side dishes. Now I don't like to deal in hyperbole. A five star rating should be sufficient praise. But I'm going to go overboard just this once: BEST INDIAN FOOD I'VE EVER EATEN IN A RESTAURANT. EVER. I've eaten in Indian restaurants at home in Chicago, in L.A., New York, St.Louis, Atlanta, San Francisco, etc., etc. etc. Many have been good, but none approached this. We ate every scrap of all the food we ordered, and only because we had a tight timeline and a busy itinerary for our brief visit to London did we not go back for at least a second meal.

Really good little place. They do say that all the good curry places are actually in Whitechapel…read morerather than Brick Lane and while I wouldn't say that Dhaka was one of the places that those people were talking about, it does the job very well. We wanted to go to Lahore One but we had taken too long to get there so we were looking for some kind of fast food, pretty late on a Friday night and we found here. You can get 3 different curries and rice for £3.50 if your a vegetarian and £4.50 if you want to ruin the environment and eat meat. I jest. Plus he chucked in a naan. It's great inside too: OTT South Asian design touches everywhere from the white horned chairs to the faux marble tables. Just great.

Although the quality can vary from day to day, I guess it's not always the same people who cook? Or sometimes they don't get the same ingredients? I think a big part of their business is catering events, but there are always people in the restaurant as well. Their spinach is good. My flatmate loves their mushroom rice. Chicken Jalfry is nice and spicy. Chicken korma is sweet and mild. What they call "Taste of Balti" is very tasty too. Most of it is basically exactly how it should be (in my heathen opinion at least). Meat dishes are between £4 and £6. Veggie sides around £3 (go Sag Aloo!). They open late, from what I've seen they don't have a definite closing time but it's usually around midnight on weekends.
