Big disappointment and low quality work. They have a good reviews and nice advisers (Eric). But turn out to be completely incapable. I brought my car in with 2 issues: LF tire lose pressure and sound during driving. After some up-selling agree on scope they supposed to do by afternoon: fix tire, investigate sound, replace engine oil, replace air filter and coolant hoses (well, probably need). 1. They keep car until shop close - OK it happen 2. For 5 hours they claim to spend they was able only replace oil , coolant hoses and remove stone from breaks (source of sound) 3. They was not able to fix tire (???) and did not replace air filter because ordered wrong one. 4. Charged $800 for this work - well, may be But another shop I brought car to fix tire noticed low coolant level. Looks like they did not check/fill coolant after replaced hoses. It is MAJOR ISSUE. I risk overheating engine. And as a nice bonus, greasy spots on driver seat. No comments. Bottom line - stay away. read more

We were in Truckee for the week and our car brokedown. Check engine light went on, car started sputtering, struggled to get up even mild inclines - not something you want when up in the mountains. Basically, we were up sh*t's creek. I frantically called a few local shops and came across Quality Automotive. They had me come in to check the codes and theorized a couple of possible issues. I took the car in first thing the next day and they said they would do everything they could to get it fixed within that one day so we could head home. I was hopeful. My technician was Cambria and she was fantastic. Not long after dropping the car off she contacted me to let me know what the issues were and that they could most likely have it fixed by the end of the day. Thankfully, everything went well and the car was fixed by 4pm and we were able to head home. I can't say how happy I was with their service. This is the biggest ripoff in the Tahoe area for car services. I went to them to diagnose and fix my cooling system. I had a problem on a brand new radiator that was installed by a shop in the Bay Area. Let me start by saying that one of the worst traits of this company is the lack of communication. A simple courtesy call is not in their interests. I've never seen such an inconsiderate company; they even got frustrated because I'd called too often about my car. Only because they would not update me. Even when I would call and ask for an update, since it took over a week to get done, they would say they'd return a call with an update in the next 15 minutes so they can talk to or get the tech on the phone. They said this multiple times and never followed through. So of course I'm going to call them again. Anyways, they told me my cooling system was functional and I picked up my car. Within 2 days of driving it, it overheated and I was stuck on the side of the road. When i towed it to the shop, it was diagnosed with a blown head gasket. When I serviced the radiator issue with them previously, they confirmed that I didn't have a blown headgasket. It was also confirmed at the shop where I had the radiator installed that I didn't have gasket damage. QAS denied responsibility and quoted me 7k for a head gasket replacement. They took my car that had an issue with the new radiator and ended up doing faulty work that consequently led to my car needing thousands of dollars of work. Not to mention they're performing highway robbery. Currently seeking remedies. I vow to let everyone know how truly deceiving this company is. read more

my audi Q5 suffered a broken water-pump thermostat over a weekend christmas ski holiday 2023. QAS was able to diagnose, have sacramento send the part, and install all in time to drive my family back to the bay area. the service was professional and so helpful. but that is only part of the story. it turns out that the part was not up to specs, no faulty of QAS, and had to be replaced here in the bay area after 7 months of use. I'm super-happy to provide a 5-star review for Tom & team. I just bought a new-to-me classic 1981 Corvette that developed a serious cooling problem on the drive up to Truckee. Other shops in town would not service a car this old. Tom didn't hesitate and was able to take the car in next day. They did a full car inspection and issued a report. This was good to have the car examined - most items were good. The team found the problem with the leak - a radiator hose that a nearby belt had worn a hole through due to poor routing of the hose. They also originally thought that the radiator would need replacing. However, after replacing the hose and cleaning the engine areas where coolant had leaked, they observed that the radiator seemed fine and additional $2300+ radiator replacement would not be needed. Talk about honest service! I have 4 other cars in addition to the 'Vette and I would not hesitate to bring any of these to Quality Automotive Servicing. Thank you Tom & team! read more

Would not recommend this place for any automotive work, primarily based on lack of thoroughness of work, inability to service specific requests, and poor customer service. Context: Was working on-site in Truckee for the month from out of town, and had just prior replaced the brake lines in the rear of my truck. While in Truckee, noticed that one of the new lines had been leaking, and also any attempts to bleed the brakes resulted in endless air bubbles being drawn out, despite topping off the master cylinder a few times over. Since I was away from home and tools, I figured a shop in town could make quick work of it. I reached out to QAS to see if they would be willing to SPECIFICALLY replace the specific hard brakeline with a replacement (that I was able to provide) and bleed the brakes. They agreed, and stated that a standard inspection was mandatory to include/minimum cost included as well. I agreed, and brought it in at the beginning of the day, dropped the keys off and they stated that they didn't need any additional info (despite myself offering to indicate the specific failure fitting to the receptionist) Later that day, that's when the issues began: - First, the shop front-office called to indicate they didn't see any issues with the brakes "since the master cylinder was full". I told them it was because I had just filled it, and that the issue was a slow leak at the specific fitting resulting in inability to effectively bleed the brakes (as previously stated). This indicated to me that they completely disregarded the info provided/service intent. The front desk said that they'd relay info to the tech and get back to me. - Afterwards, the front-desk then called saying that they couldn't see any leaks in the brake lines, and wasn't sure which brake line I was referring to. Beginning to get annoyed, I told them that I wasn't needing a system diagnostic, but specifically just needed them to replace the brakeline I had provided and bleed the system. I was then put on the phone with the tech, wherein I had to explain the whole request A THIRD TIME, and his response was "Well, if that's all that was needed, why don't you just do it yourself?" -- I was flabbergasted. I let them know that will be picking up the vehicle immediately and no longer required their services. -THEN ONTOP OF ALL THAT, upon arrival to get my truck, the joke of a standard diagnostic/"ABC point inspection" that they required to be charged as a part of service was filled with incorrect info, including gems such as: "Cabin filter needs replacing" -- the vehicle does not have a cabin filter, and was not equipped with one from the factory. "Upper steering balljoints need replacing" -- Took to a manufacturer service center for second opinion, they said the balljoints were well within spec and fine. Overall, wouldn't recommend and clearly are just attempting to churn through as many transient customers needing blinker fluid as possible. read more

Despite being a four star review. I have nothing but great things to say about the quality of their work. And everyone I've met there! A couple years ago I had some diesel work done there and their scheduling issue was a major issue that disrupted my life. Which is why this is a 4, not 5 star review (if I could do 4.5 I would) The boss man, Bill, was so attentive to my frustrations with the scheduling that he actually let me borrow his personal truck for a weekend for work. And that saved my butt that weekend! I just had something super minor handled there last week in my AMG Mercedes and they came through for me again in a pinch. These guys took 2 weeks to replace my water pump, forgot to fill the engine oil, which they originally said they would do, and probably charged 30% - 40% higher than my SF mechanic. The people on the phone are friendly until you point out an issue and have paid already. Take a gamble elsewhere if it's a Sunday and you can't get quotes from different shops. read more

Before I begin my review I would like to say that I have waited quite some time (many months) to write this so that I might not say anything unbecoming. Having said that, my overall experience of QAS has been mixed but has ultimately left me feeling quite taken advantage of. I don't know a ton about cars, but I have been trying to learn as much as I can along the way. I would never pretend to know more than my mechanic or service advisor, but I'll do my due diligence to try to verify what I am being told needs doing on my car. I have a roommate who is a trained mechanic who has filled me in on things that I have had done through Quality Automotive. Over the past few years, I have had a number of things done at Quality Auto. The first thing they require customers to do when they bring their car to the shop is to let them do a full vehicle inspection. There are pros and cons to this. The pro, as I understand it, is that QAS can examine the entire vehicle and show you any and all things that may or may not need doing. (AKA more potential ways to get a customer to pay them) The major con is that it costs the customer $180 up front just to look at the car and before anything is done. Most of the time when I take my car into the shop, I know what I want to have them do, and this is a costly extra step that many other shops do not include in their business model. If I know that all I want and need are new brakes and rotors, I don't want to pay them $180 to look at other things before they replace my brakes and rotors. That extra $180 is painful to loose. Now that I am aware that not all shops operate this way, I will be taking my car elsewhere. Maybe other shops just build that cost in, but my records show that their pricing model is still not competitive with other shops I have used. QAS has performed a couple of jobs for me that were helpful after the initial inspections they have done. They cleared out my EGR system when it was needed and I haven't had to deal with it since. The downside was that even though I had pulled the code that indicated what needed attention, QAS insisted they do the inspection first. They also appear to have done a good job on replacing my alternator. For that I am thankful. My main problem came when they replaced my radiator. My service advisor told me they found micro cracks in it and recommended replacing it if I did a lot of longer drives. I do 4-5 hour long drives quite frequently and agreed to have this done. Not long after this job was done, I began noticing that the temperature of my car would begin to get warm and even approach overheating under heavy load (i.e. going up a long steep incline and yes my A/C was off). I looked under the hood and saw that coolant was being forced out of my coolant reserve tank cap. I added coolant to the tank, continued on my way while closely monitoring the temp gauge and pressure tested my cooling system. My pressure test resulted in no coolant leaks. I then looked more closely at my radiator cap and found that after less than three weeks of use, the cap had broken under the pressure of the cooling system. I consulted my mechanic roommate and a number of other reputable mechanic sources and heard that many of the aftermarket radiator caps for the make of my car, even while being "OEM equivalent", just plain old do not hold up as well as the genuine OEM part does. So I went to a dealer and purchased an OEM radiator for the car to replace it. The new OEM radiator cap has already been working without issues longer than the one used by QAS. The original OEM radiator cap lasted 23 years and did not fail. Whatever cap used by QAS lasted less than 3 weeks. I called them up and asked them if this was covered by the warranty they tout for their service and parts. We looked over the records and they told me that because they did not list a new radiator cap on the service agreement this was not covered by their warranty. But hey! They said via email they would love it if I were to bring the car in for, yes, another inspection. Okay... I was flabergasted. I was already irked by their inspection cost. They put a new part on my car that they did not tell me about and then basically sent me the message that they didn't want to fix the problem that I feel that they caused. Yes, the radiator cap was a simple fix for me, but it caused me a substantial headache to figure out on my own, not to mention a scare on the road while driving and seeing my engine temperature rising irregularly soon after replacing my radiator. I now constantly wonder if there is anything else they have done to my car that they have not listed on the service agreements that might cause problems down the road. So I responded to the email and asked if they wanted me to pay for that inspection and I never received a response back. I guess I just won't be bringing any of my vehicles here again and with that I have no problem. read more

I had a strange sound come up and they squeezed me in immediately to check out the sound. They also helped me get the car down to Reno to a transmission repair specialty shop that they work with. I had my water pump fail while in Truckee. Quality Automotive said they would inspect the truck. They came back and told me I needed to replace the water pump, upper hose leak and bracket, all the pulleys, all the belts. Cost $2700. I had my truck towed to my home and regular automotive shop. My shop is a certified highly professional group. They inspected the truck. Needed to replace water pump. No hose leaks, no pulley replacement needed, no belt replacement needed. Cost $698. Very sad that this business would take advantage of customers that are stuck far from home. These companies give Auto Repair Shops a bad reputation. So important to be able to TRUST your auto mechanic. read more

We've only taken our cars here a few times for various smog checks, etc and we've always been impressed. Yesterday we took our Trooper in because the back window wouldn't go up. They suspected it was the motor and the cost to do the whole repair would be about $400. We let them know that this was a vehicle we didn't want to spend a lot of money on, and if there was anyway to make it cheaper to please do that. I got a call from Bill the next day and he was happy to report that they were able to put the window back up and just disconnected the electrical. We were super thankful for the money they saved us! First of all, the Quality Automotive staff is very polite and professional. I stop by Quality Automotive for an estimate on exhaust system work after paying for a diagnostic at another shop (who admitted they were not qualified to perform the repair). Quality Automotive insisted on performing a second diagnostic on the vehicle before discussing any repair prices. I accept that Quality Automotive can not accept another shop's diagnosis, but if I ask for a verbal 'guesstimate' on a very specific repair, I expect a verbal, unbinding ballpark 'guesstimate' for the repair. This they would not do. They offered to give me an written estimate after a $200 diagnostic. This made me feel like I am setting myself up to be taken advantage of, or the Quality Automotive staff lack the experience to estimate repairs. Either way, not a comfortable feeling. I called a Yelp 4.5 star rated repair facility in Sacramento that gave me a rough estimate of $2K to perform the repair (after their inspection). My wife and I both use Quality, and have had nothing but great experiences there. She takes her Subaru there for everything, I bring my Ford Explorer in for repairs I can't handle at home. I can only say good things about Quality. The place is clean, the service writers are knowledgeable, and take the time to explain the situation with your car. They are always happy to prioritize what needs to be done ASAP, what can be put off for a while, etc. The quality of the work done has always been first class. We've never had to bring anything back for a second look. They have my trust, 100%, and they are the only place I bring my car in Truckee. Here's one example: I was driving from Truckee to SF one afternoon. I had to be in SF for work that night by 8:00 pm. My car developed an issue as I was leaving Truckee. I pulled into the Donner Summit rest area, looked under the hood, saw a belt was fraying and called Quality. Gary not only moved things around so they could work on my car right away, he also ordered all the parts that may have been needed to fix my car before I got it to the shop. (Turns out I only needed the belt, and the other parts were retunred) I limped the car back to Truckee, and to Quality. They took it in right away, fixed it, and I was on back on my way to SF in about an hour. They may not be able to turn cars around that fast every time, but they made a real effort for me when I told them I needed to be in SF that evening. read more

They send you a very helpful report after your visit with links to YouTube videos that explain everything for the non-car savvy so I can make as-educated-as-possible decisions about my next service. It's super convenient for me to drop off my car in the morning and have a co-worker drop me off to pick up my car after work with their dropbox system.
