It's Latin American Heritage month! The Tito Peunte Jr concert was phenomenal. Mambo is in his blood. It was an hour and thirty minutes of non stop Afro Cuban jazz. I'm talking salsa and mambo! I've been to Cuba and the scene was absolutely incredible with great acoustics and of course perfection on the timbales that could only come from the late Tito Puente's (17 time Grammy Award winner) son. This was not just a concert, this was a centennial celebration of the 100th year of Tito Puente's world renown influence. If feels good to listen to great music and even better to pay homage to those that paved the way before us. Oye cómo va, mi ritmo..." (Listen how it goes, my rhythm) Treat yourself!

I took my 7 year old son to see the play "A Christmas Carol." We thoroughly enjoyed the show. It was geared to third through fifth graders and was just the right length. Very affordable as well...our tickets were $8.00 each. I loved the theater itself. It sort of had an old fashioned feel but had been updated where needed. There didn't seem to be a bad seat in the whole place and we were able to sit in the second row which was really fun. The seats were comfortable and positioned so they weren't one right behind another but staggered so that you could see through the heads of the people in front of you. The building was very easily accessible and had plenty of parking. I will definitely keep an eye on upcoming shows of interest to us and look forward to coming back again soon.

The half-price tickets were just cheap enough to make it affordable for me, but now, decades later, and living, once again, close to Washington, D.C., I am not able to afford such venues. Back in the '70's, I realized that I was living the dream and that life after the Academy wouldn't afford the same privileges. Being priced out of today's Broadway shows is, therefore, no great surprise. Any latent disappointment over the loss of those glory days was erased Saturday night when my wife and I took in our first play performed at the New Direction Community Theater. Lacking only the grandeur and amenities of metropolitan playhouses, but not the acting quality or set realism, this community theater brought me as much of an escape from my work-a-day existence as those that draw audiences by the hundreds. It also costs less than I paid 40 years ago to watch professional acting. I like the name "New Direction," because it implies to me the change in lifestyle we will all soon experience to some degree, i.e. valuing local community activity more than cosmopolitan pretense. Another difference is that, as part of a small audience, you become a bigger factor in the play's success by your attentiveness, reactions, and applause than when there is a larger audience to carry things along. You also are more likely to get to know the performers and crew, especially if you attend frequently. You will certainly get a seat closer to the action. https://noisydesperado.blogspot.com/2016/10/off-broadway.html

The 2-hour show (with intermission) was entertaining with the setting in New Orleans. This little theater had several pluses. First, the interior space is cozy and provides a fun vibe of live theater in which audience engagement is part of the experience. Second, it's only a few blocks away from restaurants on King Street. Street parking is not difficult to find if you arrive early. Third, the overall quality of individual theatrical performances was quite good. All the performers seemed to have regular day-jobs, but love theater for its own sake (perhaps from college). The only minus is the theater seats are very close to each other (think ballpark). Thus, if you happen to sit behind someone who is really tall, it may require a bit of peeking around to see parts of the stage. Hopefully, the folks in front of you will not be tall. Would definitely return for a future performance.

I reserved my seat online (got to choose my seat!) which was for E1 Street parking in the local neighborhood. I ended up parking and walking almost a block or so. not bad When I got in , there were ppl standing around waiting to be let in the auditorium. I checked in with a woman who had a printed list of ticket holder names. The seats were very close to one another and infront and back of you. I could see the stage very well It was hard to understand what the actors were saying at times, there is a speaker but in genera I couldn't understand some of the words (plus im deaf in my right ear, so theres that) Production was for an hour. Cute little theatre!
