We had so much fun at Puzzleworks! We really enjoy doing escape rooms and puzzleworks does a really nice job of creating interesting and challenging escape rooms. Tonight was our second time visiting. Max was our game master and he did a nice job of setting the scene for our room. He was super friendly and cheerful! He had a nice balance of letting us struggle through a puzzle before giving us a prompt. The rooms are really immersive and have quite a few unexpected surprises, which is what makes it so fun. First off, I want to say how much fun this was - I had been to another escape room a couple of years ago, and that one was a bit stressful. This was much more chill - I like that we had the option of asking for help/hints if at any time we felt stuck. This is going to sound odd, but I also appreciated that we weren't "locked" into the room - I feel like that's unnecessary and a safety hazard, honestly. Our group was assigned the "vault room", and there were plenty of different levels of puzzles to solve, ranging from easy to a little more complex. 3 coworkers and myself did "The Vault" and it was a ton of fun! You have one hour to get into the vault, get the ring and figure out the code to get out! You are allowed to ask for help as many times as you want (I believe we asked 3 times) This escape room wasn't too hard or too easy and all of us kept busy throughout the hour. The parking can be tricky. There are 2 parking lots directly across from the water tower. If you can, park there. Then you will see a sign to the left of the brewery. Walk through the double doors and up the stairs. At the top of the stairs you will see an elevator, take that down to the basement level and you will see signs on where to go! Definitely recommend for a fun activity, especially in these cold winter months! Then walk next door to the Blackstack Brewing Company for a beer or alcoholic slush! read more

Our group went into the Vault. It was a fun experience! Our game master, Collin was extremely helpful! I would say this was a good starter escape room! First room was super fun trying to figure out the pass code. The second room, you had to figure out how to open the door to the 3rd room where you had to find the ring! It was super awesome puzzles, and loved solving all the little riddles! I think a group of 4-6 is the best for this as it can be challenging with too many voices in there haha. After a lovely afternoon at Can Can Wonderland (which is in the same building), we saw signs for PuzzleWorks and decided to check it out. They had openings for that evening so we signed up for The Vault. There were four of us and we had a blast! It was such a fun place, we immediately decided to come back the following morning and do one of their harder rooms - The Dungeon. While we finished The Vault with ~15 min to spare, the Dungeon basically kicked our butts. But with the help of our puzzle master - Ryan - who was absolutely amazing, we were able to get out just in time (or 2min late but who's counting). Ryan actually managed both of our rooms the evening before and that morning. We didn't plan it that way but we were so glad to have him. PuzzleWorks is located within an old warehouse in St Paul. The corridors are almost a puzzle room themselves but lots of signage to get you through. Limited parking outside but plenty of parking in the underground garage - and it's all free. Overall, this was such a great experience and we would definitely go back again (and we did)! read more

Recently visited some friends in the area and we did The Hospital room at PuzzleWorks. We had a blast! Our group of 4 was able to escape in time, and the room had a really fun variety of puzzles to go with each of our skillsets and require both individual work and teamwork to get the job done. The theme was unique and there were a few unexpected twists. The puzzles were in the sweet spot where you don't necessarily need many hints but you had to use some brain power. Worst experience ever! One star only for the creative puzzle designs. To be fair, I've been to many escape rooms in my life across different states, cities and countries. This place is overall a great escape game place BUT the attitude of one staff totally ruined my experience here. I've been here twice before and invited my friends to come this time, however, Ryan made my experience here terrible! We went to the Vault room and for the first 50mins it was all good and we didn't really use the help request. But in the last 10mins, we were trying to call request but NO Response at all. Even worse, when I see Ryan walked into our room, I wonder if he see our request since nobody reply to us in the last 10 mins. He looked at me with a very arrogant attitude and ignored my question. I thought he didn't hear clearly so I mentioned it again when he walked back to my group, he still ignored but everyone in the room hear what I was asking. This ignorance attitude made our experience the worst ever! We were all shocked by his rude attitude! If you want to have fun with escape rooms, DON't come to this place! They clearly don't value customers experiences!! I won't come to this place anymore and won't introduce any of my friends to come! read more

I played 1 game at Puzzleworks St. Paul in July 2021. This review is written by someone who has done quite a few escape rooms (through out the US, Europe and South America). Alright ... here we go!!! (***NO SPOILERS***) Room: The Hospital Cost: $35/pp (2 players) Genre: Medical Difficulty: 3.5/5 Room Design: 5/5 Quality of Puzzles: 4.5/5 Cons: One puzzle was super finicky with positioning/scanning and another puzzle was very obscure (had to take a hint). Pros: Private Rooms (thanks, Covid!), Smooth Online Booking, Friendly Staff (shout out to Peter -- you are an excellent game master), Mostly Linear Game Flow Overall: Well-designed, 2nd generation escape room. Puzzles fit the theme and most of them make sense. When you solve a clue, you know what to do with it. There were only 3 locks with keys, 1 word lock and several electronic locks. We got out with 2 of us (1 minute remaining) but I would say that it would probably be good for groups of 4. I was THRILLED that it was private bookings only -- I can't stand being paired with random (inexperienced/not the brightest) groups of people because the game doesn't go well. It was easy to find, parking was abundant and the directions to the room (in the basement of an industrial building) were well-labeled. Peter was a fantastic game master. They had a beat chalkboard to sign if you escaped. Also, they had some nifty shirts for sale. I wish I would've had more time in St. Paul so I could've played their other rooms. Had suuuuch a great time at Puzzle Works. I have done a few other escape rooms and I liked this one because it had lots of puzzle and ones that I could do. The only thing that I think could use some improvement was the rooms decor was a little underwhelming. I really was hoping for a nicer decor of the rooms. (and i Have very high expectations) I did the Vault room here. it was enjoyable! I thought the puzzles were fun and interesting. they weren't too challenging that we couldn't figure them out, but wasn't so easy that its a joke. I think the owners did a good job of constructing a cool escape room. People of all ages can enjoy it. This room had some neat mechanics. I would like to try the other rooms here. when I booked a room in the past, they had private booking options for 4 people, but have since changed it to private bookings for 5+ people. Went with my coworkers for our Annual Outing to PuzzleWorks and it was so much fun. There was 13 of us and we had a blast. It's in a warehouse, which is creepy asf already and then to play Puzzle Works added on the fun. I felt like I was a detective walking into the building, walking into the suite, and going into the special puzzle room. Haha. We solved the mission in 45 minutes and some change and struggled with some of the clues but I would definitely do it again! read more

Every year, my partner and a group of old friends take a crack at a different escape room around town. A birthday tradition, we look forward to this experience every year. Delighted to try Puzzle Works at the recommendation of a good friend who owns a competing escape room business, I booked a private party for The Vault. Our Game Master was Andi (Andy?) and she was incredible! Delightfully describing the rules and back story to the game with enthusiasm (despite a difficult situation our group had with a manager prior* she did not let that affect our experience, which was very much appreciated). The Vault was a wonderful room. I won't give anything away, but this was a great experience for our group which is fairly experienced with escape rooms and logic puzzles. We completed the room in 50:51. Overall, I will most likely return to PuzzleWorks to try out the other room! *This business loses one star specifically for one of their employees, Peter Boyle. I was confused by the booking process, as one can book a private party with a minimum of 5 players. We are never sure how many folks will show up, and are used to a flat rate price at the escape room businesses we have visited in the past. I inquired about this when we were in the space, and our incredible room master went to get a manager//owner: Peter. I asked the question: "If one can book a room privately for roughly $159 for 5 people, why is that not the rate for private booking, versus the pricing structure per person?" This lead to a hostile and condescending conversation about "saving me money" (ironically while charging me  more $) while he talked past me rather than to me or listening to my question. I had no problem paying the full price we owed, it just was not clear to me how to book a private event for an undetermined amount of players vs. paying for individual tickets. Eventually, Peter rolled his eyes, walked away, and continued to talk about me from behind an open wall - so, within earshot of myself and my group. A very disappointing customer service experience.   I later found some helpful information on the "About" page of their website, but it would be useful to have the table they provide there on the booking page, or on a separate pricing page, rather than where someone would look for hours and address.  It may also be helpful to change the language from Private Booking to "Private Booking Ticket Prices" so that patrons understand you are still paying a per person fee rather than a Private Booking Fee. Both are common at parallel businesses, and the confusion seems reasonable. I hope that the business is able to receive feedback in the future without defensive hostility. While customers are (definitely) not always right, they do offer a unique perspective as your literal target market. read more

My boyfriend and I are avid escape room enthusiasts, so much so that we flew into town just to have an escape room weekend (we're from AZ) in Minneapolis since there are so many rooms there. We have done over 100 rooms so we have seen a wide variety of escape rooms. We did a total of 10 rooms while we were in town and Puzzleworks' The Hospital was, hands down, my absolute favorite room we did while in Minneapolis. Prior to getting to town, we booked 8 rooms for our trip, with PuzzleWorks' The Vault being one of them. We did another room at another location just before our scheduled The Vault room and the manager there highly recommended we do The Hospital, if at all possible. Since we had availability to squeeze another one in, we contacted them to see if we could throw in another booking to do The Hospital back-to-back with The Vault. They were more than accommodating for us and were happy to do so. What I loved about PuzzleWorks is that they throw humor into their rooms. I think this is absolutely fantastic. We've done over 100 escape rooms and this is the first time we've seen that. It adds such a refreshing take on the typical seriousness of an escape room. I will first give a brief review of The Vault and then move on to The Hospital. While not my favorite, The Vault was a really well-done room. It was very challenging and there's A LOT to do in the room. I do not recommend just a group of two for this room. This is one of those rooms where you need more people just to be able to get through everything that's in the room. Although, we were told afterwards that they will remove some and change some of the puzzles if it's just two people doing the room to make it more doable but we were not given that option ahead of time. Moving on to The Hospital. I'll admit, the storyline sounded a bit hokey and that's why it was not a room to make our list when we were planning our trip. But I'm so glad we took the other manager's recommendation and did the room because I ABSOLUTELY LOVED IT! I really got a kick out of how fun it was. There was a lot that was put into making this room awesome and really feeling like you're in a hospital. There's also a really cool part to the room that I'm dying to talk about with people that have done the room but, don't worry, no spoilers here. But take my advice, do this room! You will not be disappointed! We love what PuzzleWorks has to offer and think they have done a great job capturing what an escape room should be. Keep up the great work and if we're ever back in town, we'll be back to try out their other room. read more

Our room master, Kenny was fabulous and only gave hints to get you to think in the right direction - not the answers. Can't wait for them to finish their 3rd room. WOW! What a great place! We had a family of 5 including 2 kids ages 7 and 9. I called ahead to ask if they could make the room a bit easier so the kids could enjoy the fun. Not only were they friendly, but they went out of their way to ensure the kids had a good time. The room was challenging and the puzzles were just the right level of difficulty for the adults. We only had a couple people in our group with escape room experience, but we had a great time in the Vault. We were blown away by the attention to detail in construction of the room; even without making it to the end you're guaranteed some pretty awesome technological surprises. The puzzle variety is great and ensures that people with different interests can all get involved. The puzzle was challenging but very comprehensible and the room operators take steps to make sure each group has a positive experience. My only real difficulty with the Vault was the space; with 8 people, we sometimes got clumped up while doing various puzzles and it took us a second to untangle, but that's part of the challenge! With 10 people, there will be times where you won't be able to have all 10 people looking at a single thing, but there are always multiple things to be thinking of. The price was comparable with other rooms in the area and you're not likely to blow through this quickly, so it's great value for your money. This was as good as a first experience could get, and I fully intend to come back and check out their other rooms when they are completed! I've done two rooms at PuzzleWorks as well as other rooms around the city, PuzzleWorks is by far the superior escape room. The amount of personalization and creativity is higher here than the franchised rooms around the city. Also, you can't beat their deal of a free drink at the brewery next door. The free drink in and of itself makes the whole experience way better than others.
