There are Bikram studios in southern Westchester, but thankfully Bikram Yoga Yorktown is there for…read morethose of us who are north of White Plains and can't get enough of the heat. All of the instructors are phenomenal; especially when I was new to the practice and didn't believe I was capable of touching my toes, Donna and Patty were very positive and encouraging. Jane, who owns the studio, is also a very good instructor and very passionate about the health benefits of yoga. The majority of people who practice at this studio are a bit older than your beatnik hipster twenty-something from Brooklyn (you have to be to afford real estate in Westchester!), and I find most of the women who practice regularly to have their little yoga clique going on. The locker rooms are spacious, with cubbies instead of actual lockers, but there are only two showers. In general, everyone is quick in the shower, so there is never more than a 5 minute wait. The hot room itself is spacious, but classes tend to be full as this is a high-traffic studio. (There's this one guy who's notorious for blocking people so they cannot see themselves in the front mirror and breathing like Darth Vader, which can be irritating.) Bikram Yoga Yorktown has carpeting; apparently the carpet is deep-cleaned regularly, which is further evidenced by the lack of funky smells in the hot room and the studio. On weekdays, there are four or five classes offered per day and on the weekends, three classes are offered. I do wish one of the evening classes was slightly later; for those commuting from Manhattan, it's impossible to make a 7:30pm class after work. The recent addition of one hour "express" classes to the schedule is great for someone who is pressed for time; practicing Bikram regularly can get quite time consuming and having class flexibility (no pun intended) is always an advantage. I also wish this studio was a bit more web-savvy. Especially in these winter months, classes have been cancelled with merely a sign posted on the door of the studio. An email notification or Facebook post would be nice - there have been multiple instances of where I was looking to take the 3pm Saturday class, only to discover it was cancelled and with no way of making the 4pm class in Larchmont on time.

It's a small studio with two yoga/workout rooms but has a HUGE community feel. Drop in class are $20 but they offer tons of packages from class cards to full membership. Besides yoga they offer Pilates, tai chi, cardio, personal training and specialized workshops/events. Gentle Yoga @4PM on Sunday is led by Liz Lazo who added a little bit of Zen via starting with meditation (a bit more than breath in/out) before guiding us through the gentle yoga practice. It was a small class just 2 people so she tailored the class to our needs (back/hips). She is excellent but since she's also my cousin I will list her bio not written by me! Liz Lazo has been practicing yoga for over 13 years and has received instruction in Hatha, Iyengar, Kripalu & Vinyasa styles. She earned her 200 Hour Vinyasa Teacher Training certificate through Living Yoga with Liz Schulman and Richard Villella in March 2013. Liz is a registered member of Yoga Alliance. In addition, she attained the First Degree of Reiki through Ginny Mackles in March 2011 and applies the principles to her work as a yoga student and instructor. Related or not she's good enough to get me to give up my Sunday Bloodys!
