Friendly staff, good food, and an inviting atmosphere with decent value. They offer the simplest menu I've seen at any restaurant, goulash! Everyone speaks at least some English, and there is plenty of seating, so you will probably not have to wait. I was served within minutes of sitting down with a steaming bowl of goulash that had a nice flavor with a hint of spiciness- perfect for a cold rainy day. I was not crazy about the bread, it was hard on the outside and very light, not thick or that tasty, basically only good dipped in goulash. The goulash bowls are fairly small portions, so you will need more than one bowl, which is where the confusion was for me. The menu states you get second helpings and I was charged for an entire additional bowl. With the challenge of communication, I relented and paid the tab. For that reason of frustration, I may not return. If I only had one day in Cologne I would not choose this restaurant, but otherwise would be worth the unique Hungarian experience. read more

It's very simple. Everyone goes here for gulash. You're not getting salad wurst or pommes here. There's really nothing on the menu either- it's either gulash with meat or just soup and each comes with a roll. You also get a little half bowl with it as a follow up. The taste is spicy and tasty and they pride themselves on not using any fake aromas or powders. The clientele have been coming here since they were kids wirh their parents or haven't been back in a while, and were also as pleasantly surprised to find it again. The wait staff are exuberantly friendly in an un-German yet authentic way (maybe it's in the Kölsch water). No veggie items, no credit cards or Apple Pay. We only had a couple hours in Cologne so we made the most of it. Decided to try Puszta-Hütte, which specializes in one item: Hungarian style gulasch. They've been around since 1948. We dropped in on a Saturday evening (around 7:30pm). Not too busy as it was close to closing time. Service was friendly and our waitress spoke English to explain a few things. They only make one item which is why I originally wanted to try them out. You can also buy gulasch for home. - Kölsch (€1,70 for 0,20L) - beer is cheaper than any other drink options and obviously, you need to have a Kölsch when you're in Cologne. Light, easy drinking. - Gulasch (€4,90) - we decided to share one bowl as I wanted to eat other things afterwards. Turns out you get a complimentary refill (we politely declined). We asked for our gulasch to be spicy; it had maybe a hint of heat. A couple small chunks of beef inside. The soup itself had a good texture but found it salty. I don't think I can add too much more than what has already been said, but you MUST eat here on a visit to Cologne. Like many have said it's a very simple menu-- you get a bowl of Goulash, bread and a Coke or Kolsch. What many reviews don't mention is how insanely cheap it is! The two of us both ordered a bowl (which comes with a second helping of sauce for free if you please) and 4 glasses of Kolsch. Believe or not it cost us just under €15!! Seriously you can find a better deal for a comforting and super delicious lunch. The both of us sopped up the entire bowl and regretted not accepting that second helping of sauce. read more

This place is really amazing. It's a must if you're inTown and want to eat Real Hungarian Goulash Soup. I've never had a better one than here, not even in Hungary, maybe that was a bit of Bad Luck! But it's definitely worth to come here. The service is good and the people are surprisingly friendly. Located just beside Neumarkt. The name of this place is somehow funny because Puszta is a Grassland in the Great Hungarian Plain on the eastern of Hungary all the way to the Border with Romania. The word Puszta means "plains" but is derived from the Slavic, in which it means empty or bare, and the word Hütte which is the same as in english Hut. Also word-for-word Plain/Empty/Bare Hut. I can only think of Pizza Hut or Sunglass Hut but Empty Hut? Well... But nevermind give this place a try, you won't regret it! read more

It is as it says a place for gulasch soup and on a cold winter's day, after trudging through Neumarkt, it is a very warming and welcome respite. From the outside it could look quite daunting, inside it is very dark, but it is easy to order as there is only one choice. At EUR3.50 including bread it is very cheap, especially as the thick tasty stock (without meat) is refilled once you've finished. It has been there for decades and the wall paintings look original.
