    Aquatics Centre - Paralympic swimming!

Can you keep a secret guys?? Not many people seem to have noticed it yet, but a year and a half…read moreafter the Olympics there's some exciting stuff going on in Stratford again... Yep living near the Park is paying off nicely at the moment - my new local council swimming pool is none other than the Aquatics Centre! It's been open to the public for the last few weeks and I have to say it's a pretty special venue - I still get tingles every time I walk in. It's £4.50 per swim session for an adult and there's an easy peasy online system to book in advance. There are 2 full size pools inside - the Competition Pool for the hardcore swimmers and the Training Pool where they separate the lengths into two 25m sections. Personally I found a 50m pool to be ridiculously long in real life (my superwoman stamina is a err work in progress) so I tend to do laps in the 25m lanes. You choose a pool and a start time online but it's pretty lax once you're in, and you can stay as long as you like. The water is a nice slightly warm temperature and it's usually a uniform 1.2m depth all the way along (though somehow they can change the depth of different sections - the mind boggles!). It's not all lanes - there are also sections of the pool roped off for 'fun' as well as swimming lessons. Also saw signs for a total wipeout stylee 'Splash Time' for kiddies at weekends that sounded like great fun if anyone wants to lend me a child?! The reason it misses a 5th star is that the changing rooms and shower facilities are just not that great. It's spacious yes and there are plenty of cubicles, hairdryers and lockers, but the layout is a little confusing (quite a wander from the lockers to the female showers), they seem to have too many staff/cleaners milling around not doing much, and the showers themselves seem temperamental and need you to wave a hand past every 3 seconds. Is this how Michael Phelps showered?! (*pauses to enjoy the mental picture*) Ahem. Yeah I expected better. So remember to bring your own towel+toiletries, a plastic bag for your wet cozzie (I haven't spotted a drying machine yet) and a £1 coin for the lockers. And please only tell your special friends - the nicest thing at the moment is that it isn't too busy on weeknights! See you there :)

The changing space however is really poor for this kind of aquatics centre - you can really tell you're just meant to come, quickly change, swim and leave. There are few showers and they are quite temperamental. The lockers and cubicles are just not that comfortable to use. So it's a very good pool, but come there for exercise only and not hoping for a full spa experience!

The pool is c90m long and c30 metres wide, meaning that when it is busy there is still plenty of room to swim. The water is heated by the sun, which in London means that it is take your breath away cold but once you get used to the temperature it is pleasant especially on hot days. The entrance fee for adults is around £7 which considering London prices isn't too bad. There are indoor changing rooms as well as separate outdoor changing cubicles with brightly painted doors. There is a grassy area on which to sit as well as spaces around the edge of the pool. There is also a separate paddling pool and a cafe for snacks on the site. The only downside for me is the lack of lockers to put valuables in, although you can ask staff to keep stuff in lockers in their area.

During those periods, this unheated pool is the perfect antidote. At 90m, the main pool at Tooting Bec lido is the largest open air pool in Europe. There's a separate children's pool and a cafe, all wrapped up in grand surroundings. It can get busy as you can imagine when the sun comes out but it's well worth for a dip to cool off and to lie in sun and luxuriate.

This is a wonderfully old-school and sophisicated London members club - perfect for a game of lawn…read moretennis or just hanging out drinking tea and reading a book in one of the beautiful conservatories or on the terrace (I did the latter!) You can only get in here with a member - and most people are either married into or born into membership at Hurlingham because the wait is around 15 years - but luckily members can bring a bunch of people at a time. The grounds are gorgeous and with a perfect weather weekend you can spend hours wandering around and taking in the beautiful scenery. If you decide to opt for a membership, by the time your name is at the top of the list 15 or so years down the track, you may just be about nearing the right age to fit in with the clientele here. Yes, I'm talking OAPs. This club is a million miles away from the media crowd you find in most well known members club, this really is a place for the old-school English gentleman in his suit - which gives it a special vibe. Oh and don't forget your crisp whites on the tennis courts, no other gear allowed here!

You feel like you've stepped into some alternate universe where everyone is friendly and nice. There's a great playground for children, an outdoor swimming pool and jacuzzi i think, tennis courts, croquet lawns etc. There are the usual rules regarding wearing only white. The restaurant is also quite yummy though I wouldn't say it's mind-blowing. The BBQ in the summer is delicious though! Obviously the down-sides are that it's ridiculously expensive to become a member and the waiting list is close to almost a century.

Virgin Active - Outside on the reception floor

    Virgin Active

This Gym is great but why? Well I'm confident to say after all my many visits to this place…read more For starters I need to correct myself and say this is not a gym. I repeat this is not a gym this is a private leisure centre. It's fantastic, quite literally everything is an experience quite different from the average, but let me explain. Signing up was nice, simple and smooth as the sales rep takes you around to show off their state of the art facilities such as crèche area where the qualified members of staff looks after your little ones for up to 4 hours while you get your workout on as they boast a range of soft toys, play pen and at times fancy dressed workers for light hearted entertainment. The lounge area is just as good with Wi-Fi access that runs throughout the who building, a lovely selection of food ranging in the hot and cold selections including a selection of flat screen computers that supplement your internet access through the Wi-Fi. This setting is against the wall length windows creating an open plan feel with a consistent summer feel inside the lounge, also there are a couple of deep seated leather sofa that has a TV hanging over head with a selection of Sky TV channels. The Dove Spa area being a partnered business for virgin active provides a range of things at a fee such as beauty therapy treatments like the pedicure, manicure with a range of deep cleansing face masks. There is also a range of cosmetic products on sale such as exfoliating items, creams, brushes etc. it's something I'm sure the female customers surely looks back twice at. Now what we need to establish is that this is just the ground floor at the front reception desk, yes, there is still the back where the separate male and female changing rooms are located each with their large number of showers, lockers and both having their own steam rooms which is amazing as they use scented aromas like eucalyptus inside which is really relaxing. Now this is the whole of down stairs which is considerably large so you can imagine the size of the gym upstairs which mirrors the size of everything downstairs. Oh my, this can be overwhelming if you're not a gym person, but luckily I am. The brilliant sized studio for classes with mirrors all along the sides which will make you feel like you in a ballet studio and yes they do ballet classes to boot. What a spacious functional area for working out, warm ups, stretches and fast classes if you are not keen on the hour long classes in the two studios. These functional areas you can use things from body mats, skipping ropes, kettle bells and even Vipers for those that are in the know. They even have a TRX machine for open use. The free weights area is just as large with all the expected equipment in other gyms but with the all but one remaining difference which is quantity, and yes virgin active Bromley has plenty and their cardiovascular area is the same with all their treadmills, bikes, row machine etc. I also believe the woman's only workout area is a nice touch for privacy for all those who are conscious of it and or even have religious believe that makes this idea a necessity. I must not forget to mention a third studio upstairs that is dedicated to bikes and with over thirty of them for spin classes throughout the day. It just never crosses my mind to go in to that relentless, rigorous class. Well, I mentioned downstairs and upstairs but I need to mention the side of the building dedicated to swimming, saunas, more showers and a Jacuzzi bath for everyone to share. I hope you can see why this place is amazing, but the reason why I don't give it 5 star which it deserves is the monthly fees which ranges from £70 - £90 a month. Lucky for me I pay half that price which I mentioned in the top tips for this place. PS I have my moments when I am an insane gym addict and moments when I'm anything but.

There are good changing facilities and a whole sports centre and library in the complex. The pool is also overlooked by the gym. This makes it more interesting swimming around as you can look at the various people in the cafe and gym. If you're a Camden Resident you have to take out club membership or you can have a one off swim for the usual price, something over £3. I get concessionary swim rates so it's free for me in the mornings. ou cannot dive as it's only 2 metres deep at the deep end, shallow end is quite deep too at about 1 metre, so not suitable for little kids. They do allow kids with floats in most times, and sometimes it's crowded if you are trying just to do laps. Showers are warm (I am talking about the ladies here but I believe its the same in the gents) and staff are polite. This is a big improvement on the pool there used to be, but unfortunately its' smaller There's a smaller pool which they can vary the depth of - this is usually used for little kids and classes like water aerobics. Very small kids like to play outside in the big water feature which is very shallow and just right for toddlers and tots. There is also a soft play on the site, in my opinoin pretty expensive at about 8 pounds
