Westenders have been swimming (and trapeezing) in the Western Baths since 1876 and for that reason…read morealone, it can be considered an institution. However, the magnificent building, situated near the University, is misleadingly-titled given that it is actually a fully-functioning leisure centre, with a gym, badminton courts, 5-a-side football pitches, Turkish suite, aerobics studio and a range of classes (some of which are also available to non-members). The pool remains the facility's main selling point and is situated in a truly grand hall lined with lovingly-restored balconies. Measuring 30ft, it is frequented by swimmers of all levels, as well as plenty of kids who love diving from the boards or swinging on the travelling rings and trapeze ropes. With the bar having recently had a lick of paint as well, the Western is an all-encompassing venue which many of the members consider to be a second home. For me, it'd probably turn into 600 quid a year for two games of 5s, but for the more dedicated among you, definitely worth checking out.

I've not been in any of the rest of the building so can only comment on the pool - I really like coaching here, the hall is beautiful, although it can get very warm standing at the side! Like other older baths, the Western baths has a trapeze and rings which I have never seen anyone use but you can watch on youtube if you want to see it done! Note the pool is 30 yards so a length will take you a bit longer than expected. To other coach type people, climbing the stairs up to the trapeze platform gives you an excellent alternative angle from which to watch people swim - best tip from last week!

Sadly, I have only ever managed a trial membership: the cost, against using GCC's perfectly adequate facilities, made me decide against a longer commitment. It has brand new equipment, plenty of classes, both during the day and in the evening, and there are plenty of different rooms, making it feel more relaxed than most gyms. It never gets too busy- most gym memberships are hardly used- and the pool area is immaculate. It has several jacuzzis and sauna rooms, beautifully clean changing rooms and on-site massage. There's even a little shop, for when you forget your trunks. The downside is the cost- it pitches above the average, and the way that they ask about your current gym suggests that they are trying to offer individual deals that are most likely to attract you. They also do different deals for limited use, something I find useless: if I have a gym, I want to be able to use when I like, not just during the day. However, if you can afford it, it is far from the madding crowd.

Onsite facilities include a gym, swimming pool, sauna and restaraunt. There is also parking available. Note that discounts are available to NHS staff, so it may be worth giving them a call as you can get cheaper rates!
