Thank you for your response. We did want family style dining, but it was never explained that in order to get into our budget that that was the best option. Really wish that had been communicated the first time we explained what our budget was. Instead, lots of time was wasted on our side and your companies due to poor communication. We should not have needed to get so many different proposals outside of our budget after we were very clear about our limits and offered our own suggestions and compromises (only half of which were added to the new proposal which was still outside of our clear budget). It was incredibly frustrating and discouraging to not receive helpful suggestions while our own suggestions were also ignored. read more

Our wedding planner led us to Pure Joy - we wanted an out-of-the-box, different approach to wedding food. Their website proves this - Pure Joy can do anything and everything! We had the most amazing tasting 10 months before our wedding day - trying an array of foods that were all so delicious. During planning, Patrick was extremely communicative and was on top of everything. We chose pass arounds for cocktail hour and for dinner we chose stations that fit our vibe, including Messy Sexy Veggie Station, Sushi Cubicles, and Fire Grilled/Chef Carved Station. Everything was so fresh, flavorful, and clearly locally-bought and cooked. The sushi was so impressive - we are SO glad we went for it! We decided on the churros (had them at the tasting and knew we had to include them) and pie station for dessert which were both a hit. We used Pure Joy Catering for our wedding at Whispering Rose Ranch in Solvang, CA. We ended up spending a little more than we initially were planning after all was said and done. However, we were ultimately happy because the food turned out great and the service was solid. We did cocktail hour mezze table and two passed appetizers and then the reception was family style and we had salad, steak, salmon, and penne pasta. Patrick and his team made sure the bride and groom were portioned food to make sure we ate. We got popcorn and sliders for late night snacks - the sliders were a little cold by the time they came out so might recommend a different one. But truly we got many compliments about our food overall from guests. They offered personal tasting for a fee or "behind the scenes" tastings where you could go to a scheduled event and get a to go bag of actual catered food from an event - we weren't able to take advantage of it but I liked this option to avoid paying additional money just for a tasting. We absolutely LOVED our experience with Pure Joy for our wedding a few weeks ago! We worked with Patrick who was wonderful right from the start. He knows the business inside and out and since we had never planned an event on this scale his expertise was beyond helpful. We trusted his taste level right away so much so that we only ended up using vendors that he recommended which worked out great. After our initial tasting at the Pure Joy offices we were blown away, the food was some of the best we'd ever had and the staff was warm and welcoming. Patrick and his team provided exceptional service every step of the way. At one point we needed to get costs down a bit and he went through our budget line by line with us to help get us to where we needed to be. On top of that we ended up having a last minute idea to do a "Cake Walk" which involved asking his servers to bring our variety of cakes out in somewhat of processional as a fun song played. They not only brought them out, they danced and even wore the top hats we got them! It was so much fun and seriously exceeded our every expectation. We couldn't wait to have their food again at our wedding and our guests couldn't stop raving about it. The short rib was especially decadent, we will be craving it for years to come! Our only complaint is that we can't eat their food on a whim when we pass through Santa Barbara because it is seriously to die for. We were delighted to have Pure Joy cater the 85th BD event for husband Ron. The food was outstanding -- tasty, correct temperature, attractive and the timing of each course was perfect. The Pure Joy crew were outstanding, pleasant, helpful, and professional. The lead crew member checked with us throughout the afternoon on serving, timing, and organizational details. He also made helpful suggestions throughout the day for timing, dishes, and setup. They did a lovely job of arranging a simple, colorful decoration of flowers down the center of the table. Very importantly, the lead crew caterer did an excellent job of cutting and serving the cake. One of the guests was so impressed with his skills that she complimented him during the event. Everything was left spic and span, neat and tidy. All the leftovers were nicely boxed up and left in the refrigerator. I was amazed at the skill of the workers and astounded at the amount of equipment it took to put on an event of this nature for 12 guests. There were questions by guests as to who the caters were and comments on what a lovely job they did for the event. The events coordinator was very responsive to requests for changes or additions, although sorting out the equipment rental list was a challenge for us. I just want to say a HUGE thank you to Annie and the Pure Joy team for being such a major part of our wedding. They were there for us through the whole planning process, and we couldn't have done it with their guidance and support. We didn't have a wedding planner, so everything was on us. I was at a tasting for my nephews wedding. I was amazed how tasty the food was and the spiel that was given to us. DONT BE FOOLED! At the wedding rehearsal which they catered the food was cold and the family style meal was so sparse that we had to ask for more. The staff was rude and inconsiderate from the beginning bartenders to the servers. I was in such shock from what we were told and how Patrick said at the tasting that there is always plenty of food. We used Pure Joy Catering for our wedding this past April and could not have been more satisfied with every aspect of their service. If you choose not to read anymore, I would just say that Pure Joy was a tremendous value, the food and service were incredible, and if you book them, you will not have to worry about a thing they are in control of that day. We had a number of quotes from various caterers in the area, I think Pure Joy was in about the middle pricewise but they are seriously an incredible value for what you pay. Our wedding was in Santa Barbara and had approximately 120 guests. We worked with Patrick to help plan the menu and he was extremely helpful in picking dishes that worked with our theme and fit our taste. We started by doing a backstage tasting with Pure Joy where we went to one of their events and they set us up with a takeout box of all the items they were serving that night. We knew we were in good hands at that point because the food was incredible. Our Menu: We had passed appetizers of crab cakes, chicken and waffles, and caprese skewers. The crab cakes were fantastic, my wife could not stop raving about them. The chicken and waffles were crispy and juicy and the caprese skewers were vibrant and acidic in a great way. We had plated salads of the farmers market veggie salad that had this delicious vinaigrette on it. For dinner, we had the Mediterranean halibut, juicy grilled chicken, market grilled veggies, fingerling potatoes, and fresh bread planks. I think I ate four full loaves of this bread, it was so good and served warm. I was shocked at how good all of this food was. It was legitimately restaurant quality food coming out for 120 people at the same time. The flavor of the halibut was a great balance of salt and acid. The chicken had a great grill char and was very juicy. Definitely get the market veggies, there was a great mix and they were cooked perfectly. Many of our guests came up to us to say how good they thought the food was. The amount they gave was crazy. The appetizers never ran out. We did family style and many of our guests ordered seconds and it was no problem. The service: It is hard to top how good the food was but honestly, the service may have matched it. Patrick was our day of lead and he had absolutely everything covered including getting us items we forgot to provide the venue. All of his staff was so friendly and attentive. All of them did a fantastic job. They also left our venue clean at the end of the night. My wife and I used Pure Joy for our wedding reception catering, and they did an absolutely fantastic job. From start to finish, everything from food quality, service, planning, presentation, and just general experience was wonderful. Ellen was excellent as an event planner, helping us to figure out our plan of events, from timeline, to food choice for each stage of our event. Communication was always timely and pertinent. We didn't have a wedding coordinator, so we felt like Ellen pretty much filled that role for us, and we couldn't have asked for a better experience. Day of, Blake was our event supervisor, and he did an awesome job. He moved through some hurdles (fire alarm going off, specific needs for guests with disabilities, changes in timeline) like an absolute pro. Food was incredible. I can't imagine anything that comes out of their kitchen is anything other than the best version of what you would imagine it to be. We had plated meals and passed apps (veggie tower was legit, late night mini burgers and shakes were great). Just for constructive purposes, and a heads up, our only critique was that our original estimate was pretty basic, so the actual cost ended up being significantly higher with any sort of upgrades we added on. I wish I had read deeper into the reviews when choosing a caterer. I realized after the fact that we were not the only customers with a disappointing planning and contracting experience. We had to break out the fine-toothed combs and assertiveness due to the misleading proposals. At our timed check-ins, we would make minimal changes, and the updated proposal would come back with significant price adjustments. Hence the fine-toothed comb. The changes were not on initial proposals used to get us to commit to using this company for out event. The changes were not discussed during the check-in conversations, rather slipped in after. The first time I called them out on this, it was met with a tone-def and condescending response. I don't like passive aggressive communication and I prefer to give people the benefit of the doubt, so I continued to try to clarify my perspective on the lack of honesty within the emails and phone calls. I finally got a "yes, maybe we should have included that in the previous proposal". We thought we were now on the same page, but alas, it happened again! The back and forth with both the lack of attention to detail (ex. we asked to have items removed and not rented, and items were not removed), to more "required" things that were added (ex. $200 worth of umbrellas). I do understand if umbrellas are required by some food/health policy... but the issue is, if that if the case, this should have been included on initial proposals at the time when PJ knew the menu, the venue, and the event time. Just ONE example. The food was very good and we really appreciated the wait staff, who were very friendly and professional, and very helpful with our day-of weather issues. It is a shame they run their business this way, not only for the obvious reason that it was an unpleasant experience, but also that it's just not necessary. Your food and delivery are great, no need to deceive people into hiring you. Also, if you use sales skills, you may find people are willing to spend more money. They also had done several weddings at our venue (The Cabrillo Pavilion) and were able to give us some insights about set-up and really made us feel reassured that everything would run smoothly and on time. Be careful when working with Pure Joy. The contracting process was far from straight forward and led us to eventually walking away from our deposit. We were simply misled and felt manipulated. We decided to go with another caterer. Update: Pure Joy Catering was issued a summons and the judgement required them to repay us. Be very careful when dealing with contracts. Take physical notes and record their verbal guarantees with a witness. This is in response to the comment to my review by Pure Joy: Yes, our wedding is carnival/circus themed and therefore the food that we chose to serve is in line with that theme, namely Americana, meaning Mac & Cheese, Mini Burgers, Corndogs, Grilled Cheese, etc. The fact that we choose these items does not in any way mean that we do not want them to be delicious. In fact, the sample foods that we tasted at the two other caterers was delicious and could hardly be compared to the bland items you served us. And, to be clear, the items we tasted at your open house that were less than satisfactory were the Mac & Cheese which was lacking in robust cheese flavor and was somewhat bland in general, and the Grilled Cheese quarters served with Tomato soup where the sandwiches were dry (apparently toasted not grilled) and the soup tasted as if it came out of a can. I am not saying it did come out of a can, but that is what it tasted like. I do see that you generally get very good reviews and I applaud you for that. I would hope that our experience with you was uniquely bad, but I must repeat that almost all the food we tasted at your open house was really not good and the food we tasted at the backdoor tastings was passable, but certainly not exceptional in any way. read more

We used Pure Joy for our July 30th, 2011 wedding for catering and bar. Food was one of my biggest priorities in planning my wedding, and when I saw all the awards Pure Joy had received over the years and tasted their food, we decided to go with them. Wow did they deliver! I have to admit I had incredibly high expectations going in to the event after all the planning we did, and the amount of money going into everything. Patrick was a joy to work with, and I always felt like they had everything completely under control. Whenever I left a meeting with him I felt like everything would be great because Pure Joy would allow nothing less! After many intense planning sessions and a number of backdoor tastings we got the menu set perfectly, rentals and linens all squared away etc. I was really looking forward to the menu and was incredibly excited for the wedding. I can't speak much for the cocktail hour as I was doing pictures, but I heard all the appetizers were great. I did get a lot of ceviche and coconut shrimp, which were to die for. I didn't get to try any of the pear and gorgonzola filo pockets though, which I was looking forward to. I would recommend setting someone on food saving duty for the cocktail hour if you want to try all your apps. But I think the guests must have enjoyed them because they gobbled them all up!! We were going for central coast, CA cuisine, with a few personalized touches, and they pulled it off perfectly. It was delicious, satisfying, fresh and light. I could eat that meal every day for the rest of my life and never get sick of it. And the creme brulee station for desert was a huge hit! My french grandmother complimented the creme brulee. The actual wedding day was just incredible. The food was amazing!! People went back for seconds and thirds, and just raved about everything on the menu. The service was also impeccable, with servers coming to all the tables frequently to refresh wine and drinks. And the setup looked fantastic! I got married almost two years ago and used Pure Joy for my catering and rentals, I couldnt have been more proud/happy with my choice. Honestly I chose them because they were reasonably priced and looked like they were competent enough to do it and the food was really good. They completely exceeded my expectations. Before the big day they were extremely helpful and organized. They didn't mind my perfectionist coming out and bugging them all the time. The food was amazing, I still have family telling me how much they loved it. The only negative I can say, and I think it is just something to be aware of so you can fix it, was something I saw later in my pictures. I had a welcome beverage bar, teas and juices (which were all AMAZING and my guests loved) but they were labeled... on a piece of paper with SHARPIE!!! I am a perfectionist with an extreme attention to detail so this drove me nuts, if I had know I would have made a cute sign describing the choices. I can't even count the amount of DELICIOUS meals I have enjoyed from Pure Joy Catering! Arriving at a Santa Barbara event and seeing their signature van means I know I'm going to be eating well that night! Had to help my daughter regain her "pure joy" after a disappointing experience. I recommend you use an American Express card to pay in case there's something that needs to be refunded. They really gave us the runaround. read more
