Buyer beware. When…read moremy schedule changed and I attempted to cancel my membership, I was informed that I would be charged for an additional full month regardless of whether I used the classes. What turned a routine cancellation into a negative experience was not the existence of policies, but the way the situation was handled. Communication was delayed, dismissive, and unhelpful, and reasonable questions about options or accommodations were repeatedly met with deflection rather than engagement. The studio owner's public response to this review further illustrates the issue. Instead of addressing concerns about communication and professionalism, it speculates about my motives, references my class bookings, and characterizes me as attempting to "take advantage" of a promotion. That framing is inaccurate and unnecessary. I was willing to adhere to the terms of the agreement and downgraded my membership in good faith when my schedule changed. The issue was never avoiding obligations -- it was the lack of respectful, straightforward communication. Publicly calling out individual customers by name and assigning intent, rather than resolving matters privately and professionally, is concerning. This experience felt far removed from the community-focused, supportive environment the brand promotes and instead reflected rigid enforcement paired with poor customer care. Prospective members should read cancellation and downgrade terms very carefully and consider how issues are handled if circumstances change.

Pure Barre Sherwood - A Disappointing Start for a Long-Awaited Studio…read more I joined Pure Barre Sherwood as a "Founders Member" back in March 2024, excited to support a new fitness option close to home. As a fan of group workouts like Barry's Bootcamp and OrangeTheory, I looked forward to adding Pure Barre to my fitness routine. For 8 months, I followed their updates via marketing texts and Instagram (@purebarresherwood), watching as the studio build-out came together. Finally, on November 11, they opened with VIP and Intro classes. I was thrilled to attend my first class on November 14 at 5:45 pm. As a busy mom of 8-month-old twins and a 5-year-old, arranging childcare is no small feat. Despite last-minute traffic and parking challenges, I arrived exactly at 5:45, only to see the studio door close just as I walked in. At the front desk, I expected a warm welcome or maybe a bit of flexibility for a Founders member's first class during grand opening week. Instead, the co-owner, Amber, directed me to a trainee who told me that, per policy, late arrivals are not allowed to enter the class once the door is closed--no exceptions, not even during the opening week. In today's world, SMS is the go-to for reminders. Email feels like the new voicemail--easy to miss! While I understand the importance of policies in group fitness, a little flexibility or a one-time pass would have made a big difference, especially given the circumstances. The rigid approach left me feeling dismissed and disappointed. Customer experience is critical, especially in a small, community-oriented place like Sherwood. After a long day juggling work, childcare, and arranging an hour for myself, I left feeling deflated. A quick reminder text welcoming me to my first class with policy info or a welcome phone call could have avoided this entirely. To Pure Barre Sherwood: I genuinely love supporting local, women-owned businesses and want to see you thrive, but first impressions count. I hope to see the studio grow with a bit more empathy and attention to customer experience. To Future Guests: Learn from my experience--be sure to review the policies and plan to arrive early. Wishing you a great workout, though I won't be returning.

I was a long time member at a community center but found all the classes I wanted to do were during the day and really nothing for those of us who work outside the home. I had so much trouble losing the covid weight and tried everything to get back into shape. I took a foundations class and just fell in love with the movements and it became my church! However, a few weeks ago, I injured my finger taking a define class (pure barre with cardio and weight training), and split my finger open on the sharp part of the actual bar. There was no apologies or any kindness, "How is your finger:" Is there anything we can do?" It just seemed like they were indicating since I lost so much weigh and was weak that it was my fault; perhaps that had something to do with it, but the way I was treated was inhumanly. Granted, they did give me a free medical freeze, etc. but I think it was to cover their own hind.'' As with any business, I wanted to keep them updated and went into the studio to get WATER, and just got chewed out by the manager stating my presence was bad for business and that I was driving new members and members away. It wasn't like I was standing in front of the business with a cardboard sign begging people to go in because they would get injured. It was ridiculous. Mind you, this is coming from the owner RANDI MAKIN. If I were to have a business that served clients and paying members, it wouldn't be in my worst nightmare I would shun anyone away. I believe in customer service and think that if you treat customers/ members well, word will get out that they would want to join, or at least enjoy the experience with you. I have brought in several friends and they just loved it, but now I would recommend anyone to not even think about joining the Tanasbourne location. I was awestruck by the owners response, just not even being a bit concerned about me, a PAYING MEMBER'S well-being or taking any responsibility and blaming the accident on me. I immediately sent out an email stating my dissatisfaction with the response to Randi's txt (yes, it eas all in a text mind you), and basically asked for any kind of kindness as to the state of my finger. They never offered me any kindness and therefore canceled my membership immediately. The only response I received was "So sad to see you go." I was stunned! Next steps are to contact corporate because I have done all I can do to complain about the ridiculous text. I am in no way try on to drive business away from PB, and maybe all the locations are the same, business, not member focused, but do not go to the Tannasborne location. They didn't even offer to pay my medical bills. The text totally confused me and left me feeling angry and resentful, so I waited a day, just to get any type of recognition or response and I got peanuts.

It really hit the spot, it is located at Pearl District that the walk back to my hotel Benson is cherry on top. Carrying my ever-growing child had become painful in my abdomen and I overall felt like pregnancy had wiped out my strength and confidence in my body. My efforts to remedy the situation myself had proved fruitless. My initial consultation with Jessa was enlightening -- she saw and understood so many things about my body and its condition that I would never have figured out on my own. Over about six months and 8-10 sessions (mostly via Zoom), Jessa crafted and incrementally enhanced an exercise routine to build back my core strength, straighten my curved spine, and resolve my mommy pooch. After a few months, the results became obvious and encouraging. I have not historically been an "exercise person" and approaching a personal trainer felt intimidating. I appreciate that Jessa met me where my knowledge and skill level was at, took the time to explain the exercises and their purpose, and adjusted the program to accommodate the amount of time I had to realistically spend on exercise during my busy days as a working parent of a toddler. Working with Jessa helped me regain a sense of agency and ownership over my body that I had lost during the experience of pregnancy and I'm grateful to have found her.

Jessa has added both a stretching class as well as a 'Mod 45' class which has less cardio for people who may not be quite ready for the challenges of her regular hour-long Mod Physique class. As Jessa's been teaching more and there are more regular students, she's expanding into even more challenging sets that focus on inner and outer thigh work, glutes, hip flexors, and... burpees. :) My abs have never been this strong, and I can definitely tell that I don't jiggle much at all when I go running on my non-Mod Physique days. Jessa is supportive, insightful, really knows her stuff and is there to assist and correct so that everyone is using their best form during the workouts. Come give this amazing combination a try!! Easy location to park nearby; new facility, super-helpful and supportive staff. The workout is an intense hybrid of cardio, Pilates-style core work, weights, strength/lengthening and in a vaguely circuit-training style... all on cushy mats in bare feet so you have fabulous control. Jessa, you're amazing and I'm so, so glad you've opened up your studio here in Portland!! If you're looking for something to combine intense core work and cardio and barre, ~: this is it!! :~

That was until the new owner, Lauren Wood, decided to make anyone coming in through ClassPass or Wellhub feel as though they're taking advantage of her by not paying her directly. She emailed to say she planned to leave these platforms and asked me to pay for a membership through her instead. I declined, since I already pay quite a bit for my Wellhub membership, which allows me to attend a variety of classes across different studios. I had booked a class for 9:30 a.m. tomorrow, and at 8:20 p.m. tonight, Lauren canceled it -- because she wanted to "save space" for people who pay her directly. So even though I booked an available class in advance, I was bumped to make room for someone who might pay her a few dollars more. I had a small window to work out tomorrow, and her last-minute cancellation made it impossible for me to find an alternative. Could you even top this kind of horrible customer service? What a joke. Lauren wants to have her cake and eat it too - stay on these platforms to keep the revenue flowing but eject low paying customers from their booked spot if she can fill it with "higher value" clients. Don't worry, Lauren -- I won't be "lowering your standards" by coming back to your studio. I'm so sorry you received such a pittance for my attendance. At this point, I'd rather work out anywhere else. Pure Barre, for example, offers more challenging classes -- and guess what? They're always happy to see me.
