This…read morewas a great gym to drop into as a hotel guest at a place that offers free access, but I'm not sure I would join this gym unless it was really, really cheap. Here's why: 1) Equipment: pretty good selection actually. Lots of free weight options, including barbells, a squat rack, benches, a deadlift area with bumper plates, dumbbells up to 100lbs; plus many machines, including cable machines, and quite a few cardio options. The high point of this gym is definitely the variety of training options. 2) Ambiance: needs work. The whole gym is dark and a bit dingy; the bathrooms are filthy (well, at least the men's was), there's water and who knows what else on the floor and many lockers were broken; equipment is in general disarray, and some machines don't function exactly right. All in all, this gym needs a tune-up! 3) Convenience: 24 hours, close to many downtown hotels, some parking out front. All in all, an ok gym, but definitely needs some TLC!

This gym is pretty gross. Despite that, it's busy. A lot of hotels send their patrons here. Every…read morepiece of equipment has rust and/or paint peeling. Floors are discolored. Wall mirrors are cracked. Machines feel dirty and gross. I didn't see most people wiping down after using. There wasn't a water fountain. No towel service. They don't even care if you scan or not to enter. The locker room is probably the cleanest area and supringsly large.

Summer means less traffic, more time, and hotter weather, so I decided to check out some of the…read moreboutique fitness studios around town- including Pure Barre Mt. Pleasant (South). The Pure Barre studio itself is fairly small but welcoming. You don't have to arrive super early to set up equipment or stations, and most people walk in shortly before class time. There's one bathroom in the back, along with cubbies for your phone and personal items. For the class, bring a water bottle and sticky socks- if you don't own a pair, you can buy them in-house. Tip: The socks are one of the least expensive Pure Barre branded items you can buy. My first class was with an instructor named Kelsey. We talked a bit before class and she demonstrated a few signature moves for me, like tucking (oh, the infamous tucking!). I've since taken classes with a few instructors, and every one is very positive during class, even encouraging students by name. They also offer adjustments and alternative exercises if you're struggling with an injury or setback. Pure Barre is a solid workout. Even coming from a fitness background, the core section helped me discover muscles I didn't know existed- especially the next day. I used the 2lb weights in the first class to learn the moves, but quickly moved up to the 3lb ones. Larger weights are offered, but never underestimate how tough pulsing small weights can be. Start small until you understand the moves. If you're active in another sport, Pure Barre is a great cross training activity to exercise other muscles, like stabilizing core, thigh, and glute muscles that may not get as much attention from running or other cardio. I also like that class is exactly 50 minutes and you don't leave drenched in sweat. The class isn't heated, so you can run errands or go to Whole Foods next door without having to change clothes or dripping sweat all over your car seats. Classes are even offered around noon, and if I worked in the area, I could see myself doing that as a lunch-break workout.

Unfortunately, I do have a bad knee as stated on my paperwork. A few of the movements were tough for me without adjustments. I wish there had been a bit more guidance on low impact or knee friendly modifications throughout class. Still, it was a great workout and I would consider going back just with more awareness of what I need to modify next time!

I ended up signing up for an 8 pack of classes / month on an ongoing basis. The one thing I REALLLLLLY don't like about this gym are the membership options. I am a member of Gritbox and have been for 2 years so I'm just at Pure Barre to supplement. I will max be here twice a week. The 8 pack of classes is on auto draft with a 30 day cancellation policy. I have NEVER heard of a gym that put class packs on auto renew AND the classes don't roll over. The whole point of gyms offering classes is for the people that don't want a month to month membership. Also, how are people supposed to test out your studio if they have to set up auto draft the first day? Like I said, I did sign up for the 8 pack and do plan to cancel at the end of this month. If the class packs weren't auto draft and the classes rolled over I can guarantee this studio would stay in my regular rotation. Unfortunately, it's going to be a short stay for me but I do really enjoy the class!

The instructor was really nice and it was easy to follow. This was one of the most challenging workouts I've done in a long time! I love HyLo for the showers alone. The women's shower is a full room, with marble walls, and all the accoutrements you'd need--soap, shampoo, conditioner, lotion, towels, and even a scale. My only complaint is that they don't have makeup remover or any hair products in the bathroom when I'm getting ready after my workout, but I just bring what I need from home. The HY classes really work you in the cardio department. They all use a combination of spin bikes, rowing machines, free weights / kettlebells, ropes, TRX things (idk what they're called), and body weight to perform a lot of exercises in a short period of time with a lot of energy. Similar to what I assume some crossfit classes include. The LO classes use a special board to use your body weight and weighted poles or rubber bands to strengthen your body using your own body weight. This is most similar to pilates, barre, or yoga. All of which I'm terrible at, as I have the upper body strength of a newborn baby. Both classes totally kick my butt and make me feel like I've really worked my body hard! Highly recommend!
