Rincon Guanaco Restaurant - Pupusa de queso con loroco. No flavor on the tomato sauce or the curtido.

Sadly i will say that the curtido and salsa de tomate which is the most important side dish of the pupusas, were both tasteless, no salt. The curtido had no carrots or onions, no oregano, plus to make curtido. The cabagge has to be prepared well ahead of time so that it actually absorbs the vinegar, salt and oregano flavor. The watery tomato sauce, zero taste. My wife did not like the cheese and loroco pupusas, they had no color coming from the flat grill, cheese was ok, the dough in the pupusas was slightly thicker than what i like. But they definitely needed more color. The chicken tamal had some chick peas but no potato and a little piece of chicken but the masa had a lot of taste. The yuca chunks were fried too much but the pork was tasty, crispy and tender. They offered us a green sauce, which was just ok. All the food lacked flavor, having just visited my family in San Salvador, i knew it was not going to be a great experience but i had high hopes. Tamal de elote while it was a home made product, the corn was not sweet and when they presented it on the plate, it was already unwrapped. So i doubt they wrap them inside the corn husks, which may be the reason why it was crumbling on the plate. Dod not have bad taste but it was not great and the crema was very thick. I couldn't get the savory experience that tamles con crema usually deliver.

I would suggest the pupusas with pork and cheese and bean and cheese. Be sure to call ahead as sometimes it can be a 15-30 minute wait because they're prepared fresh. I also recommend trying it with the green sauce that they make themselves. Every time I visit I wish I try something else because the food looks and smells good but I'm usually running in quickly to grab pupusas. Hopefully I can venture out into other menu options

I must admit, I know next to nothing about Salvadoran and Honduran sweet breads and pastries ("pan…read moredulces"), but that was no problem when I visited the lovely Lela's Bakery in Central Islip, because everything I saw looked delicious, and everything I tried WAS delicious, even if I am not sure what they were called. I was hungry for lunch, so to start, I had some tasty bean and loroco pupusas, washed down with a cup of horchata. I hadn't had loroco before (the flower buds of a vine, tasting similar to broccoli) but it was great. Next was a big selection of pan dulces to take home for my family to sample. The woman behind the counter was kind and patient, helping me to choose a dozen or so different breads, all of which turned out to be excellent. Besitos, conchas, the crispy, peppery pan de nudos were a few I remember. Anything left over, have it with your coffee the next morning, you will thank me.

It was busy with Spanish-speaking patrons so I took that to be a good sign. If you don't speak Spanish, it would be helpful to know what you want going in. Don't bother with all the fast food in the area, this is fast and real, and good!

Hubby got the marinated pork, birria and shrimp. Each birria came with a cup of consume for dipping. We split a guacamole and chips side. Total was about $35 for all. The guacamole was solid mashed avocado with pieces of tomato and onion, very hearty. The seasoning on each taco was different and absolutely delicious. Lots of fresh herbs and lots of flavorable sauces on top. We forced ourselves to each eat 3, probably should have stopped at 2 but they were so good. We ate there in order to taste everything hot and fresh. Not sure how well they would travel on a long journey. There's lots of high tops and 2 regular tables. A cold breeze is felt every time someone enters through the door so eating there is not the best when it's a very cold winter inside. But it beats eating in the car. Three dedicated spots directly in front of the store which is on the corner. The gentleman on the register was personable and patient explaining the menu options. Definitely will be back.

They have so many options, all looked amazing. The owner was there taking orders and was so nice and helpful! I was undecided on what I wanted so he helped walk me through everything. I decided to get nachos for the app and three tacos. The Mongolian beef, shrimp and ground beef taco. The Mongolian was good but was a little too salty for me. I couldn't really get into the flavor. Maybe it was just an off day because it is suppose to be one of their fan favs. The shrimp taco was refreshing and well balanced and the ground beef was okay. I would go back to try other things. Overall, it was okay!
