    Empanadas de Platano
    Angelina C.

I placed an order over the phone last weekend when I was feeling too tired to cook at home. The person who helped me on the phone was very helpful and let me know that it would be about a 20 minute wait, and that my order total would be about $40. After a quick drive, I found this restaurant in a strip mall in the downtown El Cajon area. They had really nice signage and pictures of their food on the windows outside. I could tell that they were busy making orders when I arrived, but they were still very welcoming. What we ordered: Two pupusa plates with one bean and cheese pupusa, and one Chicharron and cheese pupusa. The plates came with two pupusas each with rice and beans. We also ordered the empanadas de plantano. Let me tell you... the pupusa's here are not only huge, but they are also delicious and clearly made with lots of love. They were not stingy with the filling in these pupusa's. The rice and beans were extra flavorful too. The empanadas de Plantano were a delicious treat as well. It was my partner and my first time trying this treat. The plantains were caramelized on the outside with sugar sprinkled on top, and stuffed with a custard. The only thing I wish I would have known in advance was that the pupusa plates do not come with curtido (the pickled cabbage topping) :( I was really craving that part in addition to the pupusas. But, now I know for next time. I wanted to let others know so they don't get all the way home and notice they are missing a topping :)

Love that there is a great pupusas place in East County! I got to the pupusas before taking a pic but I had revueltas chicharon con queso which was fresh, perfectly toasted with a good balance of beans chicharon and queso. The salsa was ok and curtido could be seasoned more but nothing to take a star for. The yuca con chicharon hits the spot mostly when i'm craving something better than french fries. I've also had their Sopa de res - good portion. I only wish it came with a side of rice and the broth with less bouillon. I also had to request for a side of onions and cilantro as it didn't come with it. I've only ordered takeout or grubhub and can only attest to the friendliness of the ordertakers when calling in with questions or requests. Overall a great place with consistent food quality.

Food and service are great. We did get there almost to closing but they didn't make us feel rushed and looked upset that we ate there. Friendly until the end.

This place was amazing. From the customer service to the food. The food was made fresh to order and very authentic. Glad I found this place to feed my cravings. Also the tamales in green leaf were very delicious and savory.

Sweet Platanos was not too sweet just perfectly made.

This place serves the most amazing pupusas I've ever had. Each one was prepared with care, full of flavor, and served hot and fresh. A must-try for pupusa lovers.

I ordered three pupusa's crazy, pollo,& chicharron they were all delicious the chicken was my favorite so much flavor. The crazy one was huge I should have taken a photo but I had to satisfy my craving . Service was great they make them when you order so it takes about 12 minutes. Overall nice , clean, friendly establishment . I will be back!

I encountered a very nice greeting from behind the counter at the Salvadorean Food Pupusas Express. I placed our small order to go at the register. The food came out about 10 mins later-fresh and very hot. They must have literally made, rolled and cooked them while we waited. They advertise their papusas are always made daily and never frozen. I think I can check that box. They should call this place the Papusa Flavortown Express! The sitting area is decorated with a colorful mural of El Salvador with each of the 14 departments outlined. Each table is decorated with a different picture of a place of interest in the country too. These two geographical additions in the dining room adds a nice touch to the cuisine experience. I ordered a queso (cheese only) papusa and a calabaza con queso (zucchini and cheese) papusa. The food was still hot after a 10 min drive home. Inside the to go container were 2 different tomato based salsas. One was spicy hot and the other more like a plain tomato sauce. There was also a vinegar and oregano based cabbage slaw that complimented the dough and cheese very well. Both papusa and the salad were very tasty! My only regret now is that I didn't video the 'cheese pull' after cutting them in half. Take note on the menu there are meat, vegetarian and vegan options. They have Salvadoran and Mexican plates, appetizers, sides, specials and kids meals. We will definitely be back to try the many options on the menu.

I am a fan of pupusas and I consider these the best pupusas in all of San Diego. They are big and filled of whatever filling you get. ( a lot of places that I've tried here in SD have a lot of the masa) the Curtido is also fresh and delicious. I recommend you stop by and try them. 10/10! I also got the opportunity to conversate with the owner and she was super friendly and overall amazing. This will be my go-to Pupusa place!

Never disappointed here. I try different pupilas every time I come. I have a hearty appetite so like 2.5 of them are pretty filling. They're reasonably priced and they're alllllll so yummy.

The rain may have caused some issues for them recently, as there were drying fans sitting out, and cardboard on the floor near the entryway. As a Colombian who has been craving authentic Colombian cuisine since my last visit to New York in…read moreDecember, I can confidently say this restaurant truly satisfied those cravings. Being nearly eight months pregnant, my expectations were especially high, and it is rare to find a place that meets them so well. From the seasoning of the food to the warm and attentive service, everything about this restaurant stands out. Although I don't recall my server's name, he was incredibly kind and provided excellent service throughout. The ambiance is also worth noting--the space is large, offers plenty of seating options, and even features a large TV, making it a great spot to relax or watch sports. To start, I ordered a watered mango juice along with a beef empanada. The empanada exceeded my expectations--despite being on the smaller side, it was packed with flavor. I enjoyed it so much that I ordered five more to go, which speaks for itself. They were served with fresh ají, a traditional sauce that complemented them perfectly. For my main course, I had the carne asada plate, which included steak, rice, beans, sweet plantains, avocado, tomato slices, and a small arepa. Every component of the dish was well-executed--the beans were flavorful, the meat was well-seasoned, and the overall plate felt authentic. It is often difficult to find truly authentic Colombian food, especially in San Diego, where options are limited or not genuinely Colombian. This restaurant, however, delivers on authenticity and flavor. The portion size was generous, and I ended up taking leftovers home to enjoy later. In addition to the empanadas (two chicken and three beef), I also ordered a buñuelo and a cheese arepa to go. Unfortunately, these items did not meet the same standard. The arepa lacked flavor and was overly greasy, and the buñuelo was dry and similarly oily, even after absorbing excess grease from the bag. Overall, I would highly recommend this restaurant to anyone looking for Colombian food, especially given how rare it is to find quality options in this area. Friends of mine visited recently as well and thoroughly enjoyed their bandeja paisa, further confirming the consistency of the food. I will definitely be returning--especially for those empanadas.
