Huge place at the back of Darling Quarter, beside the Sydney Entertainment Centre. I like places like this that have a variety of zones: sit-down dining in the glass-walled area out front where you can watch the crowd go by, stand-around-with-a-beer areas back by the bar, or lounge-y gathering spots to drink. Nice selection of beers, too. There are a few of the common ones, but a huge selection of local and overseas ales in bottles and on tap (including a smoked hefeweizen I quite liked). They dont brew their own, though it seems like the sort of place that would; they appear to have enough room for it, with the faux-industrial high ceilings and rough walls. One point our group noticed: no overpowering music, and we didn't have to shout to have a conversation. Didn't eat here, it looks like pizzas are their main thing. A very good hanging-out place in which to sample beers.

As I was walking through Darling Harbour looking for a place to eat I came across this place. Knowing that it was a bar I decided to step inside and have a look around. It was really nice inside, though it wasn't a place that I could really warm to all that much. They had a pretty large selection of drinks available, including some decent tap beers. However it seemed to be more of a gastro-pub geared towards a dining experience than a simple place to go and grab a drink. While they do have an outdoor area, if you are one of those people that like a cigarette with your beer then you might have to look for somewhere else to drink since it is strictly non-smoking.

Salsa dancing on Monday nights at Pumphouse

3.5 stars I only came here for Salsa dancing on Monday nights. The good thing about Pumphouse on Mondays is that the people come here for dancing (vice Establishment on Tuesdays). The lights are a bit bright (as in all on!) but hey, that's alright. $10 cover charge and not enough Bachata but there is plenty of areas to dance in: the ground floor, the upper level, the outside balcony overlooking the ground floor.

With it's proximity to the Entertainment Centre, it's a pretty good pre-gig venue, and if it's a big one, they'll cater to the masses by playing music by the band in question (e.g. I went to the Iron Maiden gig earlier in the year, and they were playing non-stop Maiden from the moment we went in - winning!). On top of this, they also have a variety of imported beers on tap and even more by the bottle (according to the website, they stock over 100 beers - I haven't had a chance to try them all yet). It definitely has a buzz to it when it's full of music lovers, but it can be a little subdued when there's nothing on next door, but it's a good place for a quiet, after-work/pre-going out beer before heading on elsewhere and they do a decent wood-fired pizza too!

Stayed at the Novotel so ate here the first night. Service was extremely slow even though it was not busy. Place was like a sauna on higher dining level and sons people left as a result. Food was not even basic pub food but something else as i had trouble finding something to order of either restaurant or bar menu everything is sweet not savoury. Ended up getting Caesar salad and chicken wings to make my own - not very nice due to the bacon jam. I also ordered a sticky date and banana pudding which only came with cream (no ice cream). Would not re-visit.

The Pump House hotel wedged between the Entertainment Centre and the Chinese Gardens is a nice place if you want to escape the hordes of masses and grab a drink or something to eat. It's generally pretty quiet but can pack out before an event at the 'Ent Cent' but today their aren't too many people around which makes it easy to choose a seat and grab a drink. There's a downstairs outside and inside seating area and ditto upstairs. We take the upstairs option but the bar isn't open so we have to hike all the way down to get a drink and order our food from the bar. Actually it's not that far but can be a touch tricky with a tray of drinks! The sun is shining on us and we're happy with our spot as we watch people go by, glad we're up here away from it all.

Low quality food. Over priced. Ambiance good. Have to order food at bar. Very inconvenient. Limited beer selection.

Terrible food, very overpriced. Really bad service. Staff were rude and dismissive. Drinks average and very expensive. Do not come here.

Being close to where I used to work, I'd frequent this place quite a bit, and before it was a PJs it was a mates fave city pub so we'd catch up over a few here from time to time. There's a pretty good mix of people in the street-level bar, and PJs have converted it into more of a sports bar so there are plenty of screens for the sports nuts to check out their favourite teams prospects. PJs typically have pretty good fare. In winter they have two absolute cracking dishes. The Guiness Pie with mushy peas, and their signature lamb shanks which is totally unctuous. Why such a modest score? Price kills the place. It's not one of the cheaper places to get a beer as someone incorrectly states in their tips, it's easily one of the most expensive places to get a beer. You're paying over the top prices for domestic tap beer. A cheap beer is $5 for a Coopers Pale Ale, which you can get on the same street about 200m up the road... Also... As much as I enjoy a good pokie section, this one ain't good. And by that I mean the clientelle. It brings in the undesireable types, and sours what is otherwise a sweet pub. The snug, the downstairs den, has a great looking bar, and "snug" seating, but it's kinda pointless down there. It doesn't feel snug, it feels stuffy and claustrophobic - and the bar has never been manned when I've been down there. Now, if they moved the pokies to the snug, and then opened up the entire bar at the street-level to include the room vacated by the pokie section, you'd have something. But why would they do that when they can get by with what they have.

Being in the city, it can get quite busy very quickly and is a decently sized basement multi-storied pub. TV screens are usually are usually playing Fox sports or something similar. I order the Parmy, just to be on the the safe side. I wasn't too game to try the Pie which is supposed to be one of the best (as judged by Irish people I work with) around. The food is carefully prepared and you can tell the produce is quality and they've cooked it properly which some pubs sometimes struggle to do consistently... The chips were the standout side, crisp and crunchy! Definitely will be trying the stew or pie, that is if I'm brave enough to.
