Best dentist I've ever had. Smart, thorough, and VERY personable without being over the top. Great, great professional all the way around.

It's a two-person operation with Dr. Gurkin and his assistant who also doubles as the secretary. This means that they actually remember your name. They also details about your personal life that you yourself forgot you disclosed. Impressive. Dr. Gurkin has never given me the dentist guilt trip when I answer honestly that no, I have not been flossing more than once a month. He also is very clear about what I might have to do in the future vs. if anything is needed now. He never pushes for any procedures and in fact tends to be discouraging about anything unnecessary. During cleaning there is a healthy amount of banter as he genuinely seems to enjoy his job and the people he serves. Appointments are prompt and breezy. I like all the plants in the entrance and waiting room. And on the way out you always get a complimentary oral-B toothbrush, floss, and a variety of travel-size toothpaste tubes (excellent for the nomad that I am). This office accepts BCN gradcare insurance and Dr. Gurkin is sensitive about students' finances. I appreciate this muchly. I've been going here for over two years with not a single complaint. I love small offices run with competence and kindness. Plus the man is a neuroscientist. Very cool.

It took me a while to find a new dentist after moving to Ann Arbor for school, but I'm glad I went…read morewith Choice Dental! (Thank you Annemarie for recommending them to me!) It's run by a husband & wife team of Dr. Kim and Dr. Ma, so it felt good knowing that I was supporting a local business instead of some corporate franchise. The person at the front desk (I think her name was Niki) was very helpful when I was filling out my forms and explained to me what was covered through my UofM grad student insurance, along with other logistics related things. I'm usually not good with paperwork, so her help was very much appreciated! After the initial examination, I learned that I had a filling that came loose and some minor gingivitis (which was expected since my teeth have been bothering me for a while now), and Dr. Ma explained her treatment plan for me in a way that I could actually understand. I should mention that I usually get very anxious when it comes to dentists, but Dr. Ma's gentle approach helped alleviate some of that anxiety. Oh yeah, and the hygienist was super thorough. Like, it felt like she got to parts of my mouth that I didn't even know existed. Quick Edit: my boyfriend recently went to Choice Dental after I pestered him about his dental health situation. He's just as weary of dentists as I am, so I was really relieved when he told me that he had a good experience with Dr. Kim. And when he says anything positive about any kind of doctor, he REALLY sincerely means it. So all in all I'd highly recommend Choice Dental to anyone looking for a dentist in the Ann Arbor area.

A chain (message me if you want to avoid them) that would always cancel your approintments the week of, offering you an appointment you couldn't make or an appointment 5 months off. And everytime you'd go, different dentist. Nice. So, when I changed jobs, my wife and I looked for a new dentist. Little researcher that she is, she found Dr. Choi at Choice Dental, which is on South Main just across from the stadium in that office building with the parking underneath. Not only is the office pleasant and the staff very friendly and competant, but the service is just outstanding. Everytime I'd turn around, he'd have something new and techy, from the tiny camera he used to take pics of my teeth so I could see what was going on to the program he used to show my how my teeth were going to move. Better yet, when I went for my cleaning, the DENTIST did the whole cleaning. Not a 2 minute consult. The WHOLE cleaning. Long story short, this dentist will make you feel like you're back in time, with a dentist who's good at what he does and actually gives a damn about you. Old school. I asked, and they take pretty much all types of insurance (Delta, BCBS, United Concordia, Guardian, MetLife, Dentamax, AETNA and Cigna). You can also e-mail them at info@choicesmile.com. And... they ARE taking patients. :)

My new dentist is awesome! I went to have my teeth cleaned, and got "the works" because they are…read morevery thorough. First I had x-rays, which I didn't mind because they have an electronic x-ray machine that stitches together a panoramic view of the mouth. No more cardboard bite wings poking me in my cheeks and throat (I have a very small jaw.) Then they probed my gingival pockets. I got a gold star on my report card for having healthy gums. All that flossing pays off, people! My last dentist never did that gum check for some reason. It was explained to me that they do it every other year to track periodontal health. Then the cleaning. We started with the polishing, which is the opposite of how it had been done to me for many years. I have to say, it worked better to have the crunchy stuff first, then the rest of the cleaning rinsed my mouth clean, so I didn't leave the office still crunching on pumice. This office has an ultrasonic scaler, which is the professional version of the ultrasonic toothbrush that I have at home. It took me quite a while to get used to my toothbrush. It tickled like crazy. So I can imagine that if you're not accustomed to the tickling, the scaler at the dental office might be a bit uncomfortable, but definitely let them do it this way. The scaler uses water to cool the cleaning head so that your delicate tissues don't overheat from the vibrations. So you get a steady trickle of water that eventually washes all the pumice away. The reason the ultrasonic scaler is way better: less time using that metal probe to flick off the crusty gunk. I hate it when the wire gets caught in between two teeth, prying them apart and making me fear that something bad might happen when the hygenist rips that puppy out from between my swaying bicuspids. So I am definitely a fan of the ultrasonic scaler! I came home and as a joke, I said to my husband, "So, do you notice anything different?" as I showed him my teeth. He said, "Yes, they're whiter!" I am totally happy with this new dentist, her hygenist and the office staff. I am so glad I finally made the switch. The few +'s: The blond woman, front desk, who was new. Very warm, kind - a total sweetheart. With a…read morecouple exceptions - everyone was very smiley and polite; it was a bit forced, but - beats rude! The office manager was also professional, fine; I had no issue with her, either. The rest, though. 1. Intake + 1st appt. scheduled same day. Gave Me pause, becuz...no time for records from previous dentist, you know - the insurance coverage situation (redundancies not likely to be covered)? But I thought maybe they had some hack for that. Let it slide. Day of My appt. - they did NOT request My records, nor even show interest as to what I might have already had done or not, before proceeding (and I couldn't remember for certain - which I told them). EVEN WHEN I SUGGESTED, THEN EXPLICITLY REQUESTED THEY DO SO - THEY DIDN'T. What they DID do - was pretend to check, then come back and lie to My face saying everything was fine. After which, I proceeded - only to get a letter from My insurance co. later, stating redundancies. Ultimately, they were willing to make partial payment - still leaving a balance. New Era hasn't asked it of Me, yet; and they better not - as I won't be paying them ****. I reported them to My insurance. 2. Encountered a baffling paperwork error during intake, where the wording made the PATIENT responsible for payment directly - in spite of having accepted insurance. Not talking a misunderstanding about copays, etc. I'm very familiar with legalese, and not confused by such nuance. Which was what they kept claiming until this dark-haired woman in the back office (exception #1) finally jumps in, admitting it was a typo they need to fix (yeah - ya think?!). She had the nerve to get funky about it, as if the error was Mine instead of theirs. Said to just ignore it. Pointing out it's the document and not their verbals, which would carry legal weight before a court, though - I corrected it in the document Myself, before signing. 3. Kaya (sp?) The young girl who did My x-rays. In spite of her incessant niceness, cheesing, affirmative responses - she was abrupt + graceless in her handling of oral tools, and impatient - even though I told her of the nerve damage to My face, as well as an immune disorder which made stress positions difficult for Me. She'd nod and smile, but kept hastily jamming right back into My mouth when I needed a break. This is the same girl who lied to Me, waving it off, claiming everything would be fine re: My insurance coverage for this visit. 4. Same girl took FOREVER to finally complete My X-rays. Kept having to repeat them over + over... I seriously wondered whether she knew what she was doing, at all. 2nd girl had to come in to help. I know the x-ray bits can be awkward or even uncomfortable in a spot or two - but in all My dentist visits in life - I've NEVER had it take so long OR hurt so much! Not even close! Both the time they took + the pain, were some 4x more than the usual! I literally had to refrain from reflexively shoving them off of Me, it was so torturous. Ridiculous! 5. The head dentist, Luba (sp?). Exception #2. Though a bit curt + abrupt, she seemed pretty nice overall; until she asked / commented about My weight being the cause of My high blood pressure. ??! But yep - not two seconds into her intro with Me, she's like - your HBP...is it because of your weight? And I'm looking at her like - excuse you? WTF?? And she's like - well, its just that being overweight can cause it. (Uh, so can a HOST of other things!) Using humor for diplomacy, having a pretty thick skin - I jokingly hinted at the inappropriateness of her question / commentary, and let her know it actually ISN'T because of My weight (though I have some extra - I am 6'1", and not even visually obese. Not that it matters). She only doubled down - totally tone-deaf and blind to any sense of decorum. So here's the thing, Luba (sp?) dear (who is no slim barbie, herself): As a dentist, not a medical doctor - the CAUSE of any patient's medical condition, is utterly irrelevant to you. All that concerns you, is the WHAT - not the why. So aside from being completely superfluous to the exam - such questions and commentary, are overtly both extremely unprofessional - and just rude as ****, in general. 6. Gemma. So when I dropped this place + called New Era to request My records - I got this girl, who didn't want to give them to Me. Said to have My new dentist request them; they'd send them to THEM. HIPAA violation. In calls between her, Myself, My new dentist - it became increasingly clear she was playing games, running us around. When I called her on it - she claimed she couldn't help; said she'd have to wait for some other girl to be there. I was supposed to be emailed a form to fill out + send back, then get My records. She claimed I'd have them by Monday, end of day. I never got the form or records. No follow-up phone call, either.
