I visited the Deli at the Publix on Hillcrest Road this morning. I went to order a Fruit Tray for a Mother's Day Luncheon at my job on Thursday. There were 3 individuals working in the Deli. The fact that I was present was basically ignored. Please know, it was only two of them that was rude. It was as though they did not want to provide service. I apologized for not getting their names. There is a REDBOX inside this location as well as a bakery, sandwich station, small hot bar, and sushi area. They often have a Buy One Get One Free sale and these items are located near the front of the store. I'm originally from FL. My work has taken me to an area where Publix doesn't exist. So whenever I'm close to Mobile I stop at a Publix. This is the 2nd time I've been to this particular location and both visits have left me severely disappointed. Last night I stopped to get a couple subs, chicken tenders and a cake as requested by my son for his birthday. At the deli was the same employee that made my subs during my last visit and did a poor job, I had chalked it up to her being new and figured next visit would be better because Publix has standards, right? Oh how wrong I was. The same girl was making subs again tonight. I requested 2 subs, a Boars Head Ultimate and a Boars Head roast beef. We're fairly simple people. Provolone on both, mayo, lettuce, tomato, salt and pepper, oil and vinegar on the side. Easy right? Wrong again. The toppings were wilted and just pathetic looking. I requested fresher veggies. I was ignored and my request confused her in the middle of making the ultimate. She got turkey and cheddar out. I politely reminded her of my request for an Ultimate. She put mustard on the bread. No mustard, just mayo, oil and vinegar on the side. She finally gets the Ultimate made. Tries again with the turkey. No. Roast. Beef. "Oh well I'm going to need to cut that". Okay? We won't discuss why you're not prepared for the dinner rush, I want roast beef. Gets the roast beef, again with the mustard. NO. MAYO, SALT AND PEPPER ONLY. At this point I'm not not even mentioning oil and vinegar on the side. Words seem to confuse her. She's finishing the 2nd sub and asks if I need anything else. I remind her of the oil and vinegar and the chicken tenders I've requested. She says oh right and then WALKS AWAY. I'm standing there dumbfounded watching her walk out of the deli area towards the front of the store. She left. SHE. LEFT. I ask another employee if he can help me with the chicken tenders and oil and vinegar. While he's finishing the task she comes back and asks what the problem is. I pointed out what she forgot, she just stared at me. Whatever. I get the tenders and oil and vinegar, grab a couple other things we needed and go to checkout. I asked the cashier if she could get the manager for me when she was done. I explained it was nothing she did but I felt I needed to speak to them. She tells me no one's available. Do what? Publix has managers, assistant managers, lead customer service reps etc. and no one is available? By this point I'm angry and just left, there's no reason for this Publix to operate any differently than what I'm used to. Publix needs to get a handle on this location and raise its employees to the standards Publix shoppers have come to expect. read more

Lousy fish dept. second time gettin nasty smelly fish. Go elsewhere. They also cook the nasty stuff last minute to sell so the store stinks to high Heaven. The rest of the store is good, but lose the bad fish! Throw it away so I don't have to. Dinner was ruined. Thanks guys! Even customer service didn't return my email complaint. My favorite grocery store in Mobile! The selection of food is amazing! I cook with a lot of ingredients that Wal-Mart does not carry and when I started shopping here, they had it all. They have an "international" aisle with things from Germany to Japan. This location has a sushi case and the rolls are really tasty. If you don't like what rolls they have available, they can make you a custom one. Lastly, the wine selection is really great. read more

Customer service is always above and beyond at this store. Super friendly staff that always asks if you need help, friendly checkout staff, friendly baggers who help you load the car. Produce selection is diverse and fresh, excellent gluten free options throughout the store that are hard to find elsewhere. Only drawback, and it's minor, not enough places to return your cart in the parking lot. read more

The staff is incredibly friendly here! The store is always clean and easy to navigate. The items from their bakery are insanely delicious. I bought a vanilla sheet cake with vanilla frosting for a birthday party and it was just perfect. So delicious and all the guests loved it! I definitely do pop in their often just to buy a slice of their cake. I've had the red velvet cake before with the cream cheese icing and that did not disappoint...what a delicious piece of cake and it was a generous portion as well! read more

The drama. The intrigue. That key lime pie over there hanging out in the bakery. It's Mobile's first Publix. Right across from one of those small Walmarts. Battle! I happily drive past both of those Walmarts to get to this publix. After being frustrated with price matching and just overall sucky customer service at both locations for years, publix has not disappointed me yet. One time I accidentally bought a package of ham that was damaged. When I realized it I returned it. No problem. Get a new package. On my way. Very insistent about walking my groceries to my car. Thanks. Try the store brand ice cream. If it's the holiday season get a carton of that pumpkin pie flavor. Eek! It's so good. Great sales. Bogo coffee is required. Really delicious cut fruit bowls. They are bogo pretty often. Mean sub sandwiches at the deli. Clean, bright store. Fast check out. None of those self check out lanes. I mean some stores can pull those off, most can't. Fresh meat they cut in the back themselves. Prices, IMO, are pretty competitive. It depends on each person's average shopping list. They accept coupons from other local stores. Even those $5 off ones from Winn Dixie. Make sure to also check out publix's digital coupons from their website. read more

I usually shop at the Airport Rd location but tonight decided to try this one. I'm giving three stars solely because my negative experience in the deli. I ordered the whole ultimate sandwich. Upon ordering the deli clerk I think her name was Tori? African American female. It was 520 pm and they only had white or wheat although I asked if there was the multigrain the clerks response was this was all they had and she couldn't cut me the bread I wanted. Although it was a few feet away in the bakery section. I ordered my sandwich which was as she mad it seem, a total inconvenience to her. First when I said I wanted "everything" except three certain items (hot peppers and mushrooms) she told me to "tell her what I did want". Secondly when I asked her for my dressing on the side she rolled her eyes and said she's have to find a small container. I could tell she either didn't like me or just had a bad day. What bothered me the most was she carried the bottle to back with her and upon returning stopped to talk to your employee didn't bring the dressing to the back and add spit. Or Some other bodily fluid. The three stars For this review is all for the meat department and the rest of your store. The employee (while male 30s dark hair tall and stocky) went out of his way to help me with buying marrow bones for my dog. He was great. Hopefully the deli woman was just having a bad and doesn't treat all customers like she did to me this evening. read more

Publix rocks! I go there especially for their produce and meats. They have good skirt, flat iron, and plate short ribs (all great for sous vide). They have thick-cut pork belly that I use to make my own bacon. They are always trying so hard to please. So I was stunned today when I got the butcher's attention and began to ask for what I wanted [well trimmed (no fat/silverskin rind) 8 oz. filet]. He heard one word out of my mouth: filet. He ran to a tray of steaks and ran them through the wrapping machine, brought them out and told me if I didn't see what I was looking for to let him know. He then went back to shaving a t-bone (no joke, he was running over the face of a t-bone with what looked like a tongue-scraper). I looked through the sad selection of filets that all had a thick rind on them as if there was zero effort to remove any of it. None of the filets were the right size either. When I got his attention again I repeated what I wanted. He told me that it was company policy (I assume to not trim the useless part off of the most prized cut of meat rendering it no better than the rest) and that if I wanted my filets trimmed that I would have to pay for the pre-trimmed weight. We could have negotiated that but between his haste and attitude (like I was wasting his time asking for something unreasonable), I decided to leave. He obviously had more business than he wanted. Besides, I could take those sorry filets he cut and trim the fat off of them myself, but I takes the whole primal in-tact with a sharp knife and a skilled person to wield it to efficiently trim the rind off a filet with minimal loss. Publix: I don't need help getting my groceries out to my car (I'm over 6' and 200 lbs. being offered help carrying my groceries by a 5' tall young lady), I'd settle for better cut filets. Charge a little more if you have to. Just get it right. read more

Publix as a corporation is stellar in many ways. Publix culture is so customer friendly, they normally smile and greet you when you enter their department, if you ask them a where something is they smile and gladly walk you right to the item, if you want your meat or produce broken down into smaller packages, they smile and do that for you. Publix employees are trained basically to never tell you 'no' or to act like they have been inconvenienced when you make a request. The employees and their attitudes are what makes Publix great. Publix' foray into Mobile, AL has sadly met with failure at this store. Key employees here clearly do not understand publix culture. If you as for a fresh batch of frosted cupcakes, they argue and tell you to pick from what is on the table. Wrong. If you approach the customer service desk with several small and separate orders in your cart, instead of cheerfully checking you out they will tell you that their policy is not to check you out at customer service. Wrong. Their policy is to check you out with a smile, in any line. If you still ask that they check you out regardless of whether or not they feel like it at the moment, they will argue with you regarding every item they scan, roll their head and eyes, and behave extremely rudely throughout. Did anyone else approach the desk but was refused service during this episode? No, not one.But they wanted to tell us how we could check out, and behave rudely and curtly, verbally harangue us the whole time stating over and over that they didin't want to check us out, and act as if they have been gravely inconvenienced. Wrong. This is the customer service desk. The employees here should be EXTRA polite and awesome, not the rudest in the store. Can someone please train Ashley and Octavia regarding how to treat valued publix customers? They make me want to drive over the bay to shop at another Publix, a REAL Publix, where employees are helpful and understand what it is to work for and represent Publix. read more
