There was no queue for the lift, and it was ready and waiting for us upon arrival one weekend afternoon. The ride was steady and smooth, giving us a gracefully view of the mountains and the valley below. It was fun watching the folks skiing become tiny as we traveled higher up the mountain. There were about 10 passengers in the cable car. We all rode comfortably together. There were seats, but most of us opted to stand to take in the view. Be sure to take out your camera, you'll get some great pictures! Ride time: 5 - 10 minutes.

However, I rated the room 2 stars because the church bells rang all night. I couldn't sleep. The rooms were so hot without fans or A/C so you needed to open the windows to let the cool air in. But when you open the windows the church bells were so loud you couldn't sleep. Oh and I almost forgot, no coffee in the rooms.

The staff are friendly and the location is in the center of town. The room night included their breakfast buffet which had a large selection of items to choose from and definitely kept us full well through lunch. It was more like a brunch. I was surprised by the quality of the breakfast buffet as the hotel has no restaurant. The owners of this hotel also own another hotel in town, ROMANTIK HOTEL SÄNTIS. A surprise bonus is that for each night you stay at Hotel Hecht Appenzell you get a free drink coupon to use in the bar at the Romantik Hotel Santis. Very cool.

This place is a hidden gem…read more Pros: - Great location if you like hiking around in mountains - Excellent breakfast - Nice lounge area with complimentary good coffee and tea and for purchase other snacks - Clean rooms and comfortable beds - If you want to eat nearby, they have a sister restaurant 100 ft away from the hotel, and they have delicious food. Cons: - If you are traveling without a car (ex. using public transportation alone), it is difficult to get here. - Once again with transportation, if you don't have a car, dinner/lunch options are essentially just the restaurant next door or the restaurants at adjacent hotels. The last item falls in the middle. Depending on what side of the hotel your room is, you will either have an excellent view of the local mountain (photo included) or a view of the parking lot and surrounding hotels, so I would check that out when booking. Overall, super nice place to stay when in the Unterwasser area!
