Please do not send your child to this school. The list of all that is wrong at this school is just…read moretoo long to write. Students and teachers leave mid-year just to get away. I heard the kindergarten class had three teachers this year alone, each one stating lack of support from the principal as their reason for leaving mid-year. The building is literally being held together with tape in some areas, where the building experienced pipes leaking. There is writing all over the bathroom walls and cracks all along the foundation, none of which seems to be fixed despite running fundraisers all year. The school's principal cannot even write an email to parents without it being riddled with grammatical errors. My children spent only one year at this school, and it was one year too many. I had heard this school was great about a decade ago, but has since gone to shambles, both literally and physically.

This school was amazing when Mr. Farrell was principal, and it was still amazing when Mrs. Cooke…read moretook over the reigns!! They were great with the kids BUT did not tolerate bullying and the children were reprimanded if needed. But as per usual the bored mothers of bayside alumni or busted up sex and the city crew did not like Mrs.Cooke because she kept it real and told the truth about their children and their behavior, whether they paid or not! The majority of parents that send their children here are under the notion that as long as they pay tuition their child can get away with murder and their children know this!!SAVE YOUR MONEY do NOT send your children here!!! If you become friends with the mothers your child will be spared from bullying if you're a working mother your child WILL be a target! When bullying occurred and I addressed it I HAD TO PROVE IT ! Which I did dates names of children and incidents Mrs. CONLAN made a "photocopy", MRS. CONLAN the "principal" victim blamed and protected the bullies by saying they were popular and well liked , did she reach out to the parents ? No .did she call the children to her office? No. Did she follow up with me with a letter or a phone call NO NO NO I transferred my child out of there the very next day after our "meeting"! They used to bring someone in to speak to the kids about bullying and it was not tolerated at ALL!! Now as long as you pay and wear your Ugg's in the am and roll up in your BMW and have coffee with the mothers at morning drop off your child will be okay!! A lot of children transferred out of this school for a reason. Staff turns a blind eye to the bullying they can't make waves might cost them their job. Mrs Kritikos is the only teacher worth mentioning she is an amazing teacher the ONLY one that truly cares, someone please give her a raise or at least let her run the school!!! The academics is a joke worksheets and homework answers are online, kindergarten level up to 8th grade! Sport teams can't be formed because no one wants to join the "well liked"kids that bullied them through the day after school, you guys are a joke! There used to be basketball, softball swimming when my older children attended NOW there is NOTHING!!! Hmmmm wonder why..... I can go on and on the point of this review is to save you some money and if you're a mother that cares I'm trying to save you some heartaches!!! I believe in karma and I feel sorry for all the pitiful kids and parents alike that participated in making my daughter a target and the topic of their am brew.... unfortunately had to give a star to this pathetic excuse of a school in order to post

My worst fears were realized when I picked up my child once 15 minutes late and find him alone in the dark alley since teacher had to leave promptly and locked him out. Classes are big and math teacher goes fast over the material, does not stop to explain. When asked to do so he bullied my child in front of the class telling him this is basic and he should know this already. My son is A student and score 4 on Common Core Math test. If you did not practice SHSAT before this is not a class for you as it is so much different that your regular math class, that was explanation given to me in Kappa when asked why my child doesn't get the answers to his questions. If you decide to try it like we did, don't complain because when you do they will tell you that your kid is wrong fit for this class and doesn't do his work. Once we both (Kappa and ourselves) realize this is not the right place for my child and he is doing great at another tutoring place they told us is their policy not to refund your money for the rest of the classes not taken. Kappa tracks your children progress each week, after 4 weeks my child did not show any progress. He was frustrated after each class because he couldn't keep up although as I mention his math grades are 90 and above in the regular school. These are some of the reasons why I was compelled to write the review and give minimum amount of stars to Kappa Academy.

Back in my day, our principal was a man named Mr. Phair and he most certainly was fair to all of us. He was the coolest principal in the city, the type you would only expect to see on TV. He was super chill, even when we got sent to him after a fight, and I only remember him truly losing his stuff only once, which was in the morning when he saw that a drink driver drove right into the school entrance. Anyway, school had it's ups and downs, but it was above standard for a NYC public school. Wish I can say the same for some others I'd go to, but that's a story for another day. Who knew I'd be back here in school to vote well over two decades later! I didn't even live in Auburndale then - I recall taking the "white bus" by Weeping Beech Park to school when I lived in downtown Flushing, back when free street parking still existed in ample amounts, but I digress. Oh yes, this school is fairly accessible by the way, and I recall them doing a pretty good job at accommodating special needs and such, despite being part of the NYC public education system. They had a pretty mean music program when I attended, a solid chess team, an amazing computer lab for it's time, and an awesome rooftop basketball court that opened up when I was in 3rd grade. Anyway, hope this school is still doing well!
