You will find the monument on the grounds of the Monroe County Courthouse. It was commissioned by…read morethe Ladies Memorial Association and the United Daughters of The Confederacy, and is the work of Fredrick Cleveland Hibbard who sculpted the piece in 1908. It costed $3,000 to construct, which today would be about $95,000. The memorial consists primarily of a bronze statue that depicts a young Confederate foot soldier marching. The solider is holding the butt of his rifle in his right hand with the rifle barrel resting on his right shoulder. The statue sits on a granite base with the word "Confederate" on it in big letters and a metal plaque with a relief of the seal of the State of Georgia flanked by two flags. The plaque reads "Quitman Guards Co. K 1st. Reg. Confederate Volunteers Co. A 14th Reg. Monroe Crowders Co. D 31st Reg. Monroe Volunteers Co. H 32nd Reg. Rutland Volunteers Co. B 45th Reg. McCowen Guards Co. D 45th Reg. Quitman Guards Co. K 53rd Reg." I am not going to get into the polictics of this statue. I am just reviewing it for what it is. Confederate monuments and memorials are becoming a dying breed. This is one of the few left standing and has seemed to fly below the radar, so is not in any immediate danger of being removed. The memorial is in great shape considering that it is over 210 years old. There is free street parking within a reasonable walking distance of the memorial for you to park and take a closer look. Anyway, as with most memorials and monuments that I have visited and reviewed, this is not a long stop. I was there less than 5 minutes. So, you may want to consider planning out additional stops at many of the other attractions in the area, or making this stop part of a larger itinerary to maximize your time and trip.
