The Clift Royal Sonesta San Francisco - Concierge area

The Clift Royal Sonesta San Francisco

The Clift was built in anticipation of the influx of visitors who would surely need someplace to stay. After more than a century, this grande dame is still welcoming guests with style and grace. Though the lobby is more contemporary, once you get upstairs, you can still feel what it must have been like once upon a time. You'll find the staff friendly and helpful, and you can't beat the location: in the same block as The Curran Theatre and ACT's Toni Rembe Theater (f.k.a. the Geary), and just a short walk from Union Square. If the play's the thing, the Clift is the hotel. If you're looking for up-to-the-minute everything, look elsewhere. You'll find electrical outlets and USB ports near the bedside, and the bathrooms are updated. I found the bedding comfortable. But the charm of the Clift is the way it transports you to an earlier time. Artwork in the halls and rooms recalls the 1915 World's Fair. The Redwood Room off the lobby (see my separate review) offers an Art Deco escape from 21st century madness. Federicks, their breakfast salon, is also pretty good (see my separate review). Caveat: Not all rooms have a desk space where you could sit and open a laptop to work. If you need this, be sure to say so when booking and at check-in. Room rates are dynamic, but when I've done a weekend staycation here, they are usually a bit less than what you might pay at another first-class hotel in the Union Square area. The Clift is part of The Hotel Collection by American Express, so if you book through the AmEx Travel Portal, there are some extra perks, especially if you are an AmEx Platinum cardmember. History, charm, a prime location, an attentive staff, one of the best spots for a cocktail (or a mocktail) ... what more do you want from a hotel?

Upon entering the lobby, I was AMAZED at what a great job they did! The Clift Royal Sonesta is now modern, clean and chic, with an open-lobby concept with lots of open, bright airy spaces. Their staff are so friendly, and everyone - yes everyone - greeted us with a smile upon entering. We were promptly checked in, and upon entering the room, we were really impressed by the comfortable bedding, the nice bathroom, and the newly designed room with clean lines, wooden floor, and chic decor. In the evening, we enjoyed some cocktail at their famous REDWOOD ROOM. The Redwood Room is absolutely stunning and a must visit spot in SF. Overall a WONDERFUL STAY at the beautiful Clift Hotel. We will be back very soon!!

Obviously others thought so since it had quite a few people lounging about. Guests were enjoying breakfast in the back area on the ground floor when I arrived. Plus the decor didn't stop at the lobby. It continued on in the hallways with pretty prints or photos transporting visitors to Japan. A small center open space had nice greenery/plants. A calm atmosphere in the middle of the City,if I can't make it to Japan for a vacation it might be nice to have a staycation at the Hotel Kabuki (a Hyatt property).

I stayed again once and noticed that the Japanese baths had been removed from the rooms, which was one of the unique things we loved...apparently the hotel had been renovated so it must have been 2015 or so. I always loved this hotel, it's location is unbeatable, and the Japanese bath, the decor and the staff were amazing. There was a koi garden and even a place to potty the dog! With fondness in my heart I booked a two night stay for my birthday this last weekend during the cherry blossom festival. I booked a king room with a balcony and view of the city. I brought my two small dogs. I was prepared to pay a pretty penny for this for sure however I was sure I was going to be blown away. The total bill for two nights, with parking and non refundable $100 fee for the dogs, was $1100.00 with seriously soaky fees and taxes it was insane. Okay fine, however now that I am home and wondering what happened to this special boutique hotel I will tell you. The Blackstone group acquired it in 2014 from JD Hyatt as an investment property and well....it shows. It feels like a worn out, sucked dry overpriced and outdated property run by too few employees that care about service. From the worn out rooms with chipped paint and old mattresses, to the cigarette burn marks on the ancient and disgusting fake grass on the balcony to the 5 minutes to route your call through two phone mazes only to end up with an AI assistant and no human to talk to at the desk. I had to ask for a better room once I saw it because they put me in a tiny 6th floor room that was so gross and when I asked for a room with a view as I had booked, it was accommodated so at least that was good. We got moved to the 12th floor. It was my birthday, I am not rich and this was a giant expense for me that I saved for. I wanted to be excited, I did. But it is just not worth that price point. I was in Las Vegas for a conference last May and stayed at the Hyatt resort just outside the city and it was outstandingly clean, modern and had really large, clean and well appointed rooms. I can only speculate as to why the Japan town property is so abysmal. I will stay at one of the many other nearby hotels in the future. And that feels sad. Kudos to the doorman, valet and cleaners we met who were truly kind, and did an excellent job with what they have to work with.

The entire staff from the doorman, the front desk, housekeeping, and anyone we encountered was polite, professional, and warm. The hotel is charming with lots of beautiful architecture. We learned it used to be a bank. The Omni was spotless and located in a safe area. The Omni is a short walk to Chinatown and a 15-20 minute walk to North Beach where you can dine on some excellent fine Italian food. If you want to get crazy, which we did, it was about a 25-30 minute walk to Fisherman's Wharf. Remember the hills! Our room was clean, well stocked by housekeeping, and everything worked to perfection. If you want a microwave or a refrigerator, that would be an extra charge. There is a cozy bar if you want to decompress after work or a long day of touring around. The Omni was not cheap but worth every penny of it. Again, the entire staff was absolutely fantastic, friendly, and happy. I would highly recommend a stay here.

Just before midnight we insisted on being moved to another room which resulted in a downgrade from the room we were in. This was a last-resort decision for us and of course, a major hassle. I asked for a courtesy discount and was told I'd be contacted by a manager. That didn't happen. This hotel is MUCH larger than how it's represented on their website. The rooms are nice, but not at the level of the (very high) room price ($685/nt). It's obviously located in a family-friendly tourist zone, so there is a lot of hustle and bustle in the public areas of the hotel, and unfortunately you can't count on peace and quiet on the guest floors. I can't understand why anyone would pay this price for such a "throw the dice" experience. Never again. We stayed here because we were heading up to Sonoma the following morning and wanted easy access to the GGB. And it felt novel to spend one night on the wharf. We were lucky to have flawless weather and Maritime Park (plus views) was spectacular the next morning. And a stroll around the neighborhood offered an entirely different perspective on the SF I know. Lots of cute little breakfast places nearby too. Most people know this, but in case you don't, Fisherman's Wharf has a Bourbon Street vibe, and that's great if that's your thing.
