Peaceful trails on a…read more very quiet island Prudence Island is an island in the middle of Narragansett Bay that's about 7 miles long and only about a mile wide. No fancy restaurants, no B&B's, no places to buy crummy t-shirts and not even a public bathroom. It doesn't care about or even wants tourists and about two thirds of the island is conservation land. There are some houses on the island but not many people go to visit. That's part of what makes it so special. There is a ferry from the town of Bristol that goes out there or you can just kayak or sail a few miles across the bay. Lots of places to land and nobody really cares what you do on Prudence as long as you are quiet about it. It's a cool place to bike ride but it also has some nice hiking. Most of the trials are in the middle of the island and are extremely well taken care of by the people that live here. They trails are short but most of them connect so you can jump from one path to another and keep hiking for a while. The whole island has ticks and proper precautions are absolutely necessary because Lyme's Disease is a real danger here. Not vigorous or difficult hiking by any means but the scenery and isolation is stunning. Absolutely quiet except for the numerous birds. No car noise, cell phones or people talking. It's very unlikely you will ever see another person even during the "crowded" summer months. During the winter the trails are beautiful and hiking through the quiescent snow is a great and ethereal experience. The ocean is never far away and the smell and sound of the salt water is your constant companion. The trails have rather mundane names like The Army Road, School House Trail, Crow's Nest and Bob Clachrie Trail. Nothing really special about any particular trail except for the fact they are on a very peaceful and isolated island. With all the noise and chaos in the world that alone is very special. There are benches, many trees to enjoy the shade underneath, & criss-crossing pathways all across the park. Channing Memorial Church, another beautiful structure, faces the park on the south side. Touro Park is within easy walking distance of the main Newport drag. For those seeking a bit of respite from the madness, it's the perfect getaway.

The parking is expensive for a town beach and the lot is not too big, so with luck, you should be able to find a place to park. I could've paid $10 to park at a…read moreneighboring restaurant & walked over but I wasn't too keen on lugging all my beach gear as the walk from the town parking lot is already long enough so I paid the $20 & we walked over to this small but stunning paradise. The town beach has a nice bathroom/shower area that closes at 5- but it's really nice & they offer free sunscreen (was empty)! They have Del's (thankfully) posted up on the corner which is nice & you can also order from a few nearby restaurants however we brought a cooler so I just grabbed us 3 small watermelon dels when we needed to cool down. The water was beautiful I am talking turquoise in areas & so refreshing- NO RED TIDE (which has literally been at nearly every single beach I've gone to this summer) and the rocks weren't as bad as the other beaches- so that's a plus! They're a private town beach- think very similar to Narragansett Beach- but instead of a cove you get the real deal ocean! They're a also an amazingly easy way to get to this beach- if you're from Northern RI- like I am- BACK ROADS & the ride was pretty amazing although not from my 6 year old's standpoint! The surf was a little rough- hence the red flag- but the way this beach is set up- you can easily watch your kids while they dig in the sand or play in the water! The sand was soft and perfect for kids! My son had a blast! Overall I was amazed at the cleanliness and simplicity of this small town beach & it could be my new favorite - in terms of beaches I go to. We will be back on the 25th and 26th of August as we rented a Cabin At Burlinggame camp ground- as one last hoorah for my son! Can't wait to come back!

Otter Point Trails is a fine gravel/sand trail great for wheeled visitors as it is fairly level, no ruts or rocks to be able to utilize the full trail and farm pond viewing. Handicap parking right at trail head as well. Farm Field Loop and Osprey Point Trails have ruts and rocks, but very mild and easy for family walk for those with kids. Throughout the walk bird song is present, plenty of chipmunks, squirrels and even rabbits during a sunny afternoon walk today. Restroom by parking lot, but no running water just hand sanitizer for use. No pets, no bikes or jogging here. It is a peaceful walk outside of loud chatty people, so please be respectful as you enjoy the refuge! Great for short out and back if you have been missing hearing the birds!

Inscribed in the statue's granite base: "THE WIND ROARS BY I FEEL IT BLOW AND KNOW THAT I AM FREE TO GO CONSTANCE WITHERBY" Hundreds of people pass the statue every day. Very few know the deeply moving story of Constance Witherby, Lincoln School Class of 1930. Constance Witherby was born in Solvay, New York, on September 5, 1913 to Dorothy Hazard Witherby and Edwin Chaplin Witherby. The family lived at 233 Medway Street in an enormous mansion that is no longer standing. Their home, a short walk to Lincoln School, looked across Waterman Street to open fields and the Seekonk River beyond. At Lincoln, Constance distinguished herself as an outstanding student with particular interests in writing and drama. She began contributing to the "Lincoln Green" in June 1924, with a short prose sketch titled "The Old Curiosity Shop." Constance published poetry and short fictional sketches in every issue of the twice-yearly "Lincoln Green" through June 1929. She acted in theatrical productions beginning in seventh grade, including the "Shakespeare Play," an annual upper school event, in 1928 (The Taming of the Shrew) and 1929 (Twelfth Night). As a sophomore, she played on the class baseball and basketball teams. She was described as vivacious, thoughtful and outgoing. Constance was a normal, regular girl as well as a child of privilege. Letters to her parents demonstrate unusually strong writing talent, as well as her love for her family and especially for her mother. In June 1929, following her junior year, Constance traveled to Europe with Hazard family cousins. The main purpose of the trip was to climb in the Alps--not an unusual activity for girls of her age and class. By August, Con and her family members were in Saas Fee, a small village reachable only on foot and horseback. Her letters from Switzerland are precocious in their descriptions of the landscape, reflecting her joy and exuberance in the stunning, majestic natural setting of the Alps. She was inspired to write poems from, and about, Saas Fee. On August 27, after a hike no different than previous outings, Con felt tired in the evening. The next morning she awoke with a slight fever which was assessed as a cold; but over the next several days, her condition worsened. She was medically diagnosed with a failing heart, attributed to strain from hiking. Constance Witherby passed away on the afternoon of August 30, 1929. She was not yet sixteen. Following a service in a small "English church" in the village, Constance was buried in Saas Fee. To preserve and honor her memory, her parents acquired the plot of land between Waterman and Pitman Streets opposite their Medway Street home; it was landscaped and dedicated as Constance Witherby Park, and donated to the city of Providence. The park is listed on the National Register of Historic Places. Her parents also commissioned a bronze statue by Gail Sherman Corbett, a celebrated sculptor of the time. The statue, completed in 1933, was not intended to be a likeness of Constance, but rather to embody "The Spirit of Youth." Originally situated in Constance Witherby Park, the statue was moved in 1992 to its current location. It is listed in the Smithsonian's Inventory of American Sculpture. Anyone taking a short walk from Lincoln School up Blackstone Boulevard will find the statue, sheltered in a little grove of evergreens, where Clarendon Street joins the Boulevard. I have biked around this area many times and enjoyed seeing the nice statue and learning about the story behind it....it makes it so much more meaningful.

I loved this riverwalk…read more As you stroll down the river, there are a lot of things to see and a good amount of nature to take in. I loved the unique bridges, all of them a different style and built in a different time. I couldn't get over just how cute some of them were and took so many pictures. The riverside feels pretty safe and was very clean. I noticed there were a lot of WaterFire fire thingies (I don't know what they are called) in the water and didn't realize the show was so large and that you could view a lot of it outside of Waterplace Park. The walk itself is easy and meanders in a nice way. It feels like an oasis away from the city. There are a lot of places to stop and sit if you want to take a rest or people watch. We stopped and sat a bench to have a drink and a snack, while we watched ducks and geese look for food. We also watched people riding gondolas float by with their charcuterie and wine.

This was dope! If you come downtown you have to visit the Riverwalk. It's a good time!!read more

There were a few spots open there just not sure if there are any more. I'll update when I go back. Absolutely beautiful view at the top. Got my heart rate up and my legs are a little sore today. This will be a go to hike for me since I'm so close. Highly recommend especially for that view!
