Hello, A few weeks ago, my friend and I came into the shop on Wickenden for matching tattoos. We got matching clementines while adamant that it "be as realistic as possible," of which or artist, Taylor, insisted to be larger than what we had wanted. When told it'd be "no problem," the $120 charged to us upfront seemed fair. However, once we got home and washed off the residual ink, we were disappointed in the outcome of little depth in color or detail. I can't imagine how he felt proud of this work to let us leave charging what he did. One tattoo is significantly better than the other, yet both have quite messy black line work. One, specifically, has almost no depth or color variation other than in the parts where there's more color because there's heavier shading. One of us has a $70 dollar tattoo with more quality, shading, value, and complicity than what he gave us. Based on his standard of previous work, these tattoos do not represent his best effort or ability. Taylor's portfolio was incredible, as we searched online and looked through his book of art. We felt that we could trust him with this small piece of artwork that would be on our bodies forever, but it seems he must have not been into it enough to give us something worth lasting on our bodies. And honestly, this was nothing close to what we asked for. We understood the decision for the size increase and detail changes, but we expected more out of his original drawing and something more inspired by our picture example. What he gave us was so incredibly different than what we asked. It was not what we ultimately came in for. We simply hoped for something just as good or better. As the colors settled and the tattoo healed, we realized how little he seemed to care about giving us a good tattoo, despite what he charged. Chances are, we're not going to come in to get this fixed to the point where it's actually worth all the money we paid for this small tattoo. I just hope in the future, he considers his own mindset when tattooing permanent artwork on someone's body, especially when making such drastic changes to someone's original idea only to not deliver on basic requests. I'm just disappointed that an artist as great as himself felt proud enough of this work to leave the shop, and he didn't feel for us, who will be living with a permanent piece that we are unhappy with. I do not recommend this artist, and this has left a bad taste in my mouth for Providence Tattoo. (First two pictures are our tattoos. The third one is what we asked for) read more

I had a great experience at Providence Tattoo, and I will definitely come here again for more work. I called in advance and spoke to a very informative, friendly woman who helped me figure out the perfect artist for me. Since I was going for something relatively simple and small, she assured me than any of the artists would be able to meet my needs, but recommended Mariah based on her feminine touch. I arrived a tad early for my appointment, but was taken right in and asked to fill out some forms while my tattoo was traced. I brought a buddy with me, but the wasn't allowed to come behind the counter with me to watch everything go down, which was a bit of a bummer but totally understandable. My teensy tatt was inked on me forever in less than 15 minutes, and I couldn't love it more. We even discussed doing corrective work on an older piece I have, and I will happily return to Mariah again when I am ready to have that done. Parking can be tricky, as it's just off Thayer Street, but the space is very nice, clean and comfortable. There's a minimum $60 charge per tattoo, no matter how small. It seems fair to me considering the level of professionalism and care. read more

One of the downsides to working with older teens is that I see a lot of really terrible tattoos everyday. Shaky, blurred, misspelled tattoos that make me question the sanity of the people who consented to getting them. However, what's the point of being young if you can't make a few mistakes that evolve into learning opportunities? If there was a socially acceptable way to sit my charges down and have some sort of "don't get ink in the back of some dude's van just because he'll only charge you a pack of cigarettes" intervention, my lecture would end with the following: if you get another tattoo, go find Dennis at Providence Tattoo and let him do his magic. So far I've sent two of my friends to PT to get ink from Dennis after he did some work for me in the winter of last year and they've been suitably wowed as well. My tattoo is beautifully colored, applied and looks almost nothing like the idea I originally brought to Dennis. After he explained to me that the illustration I brought in would look awkward as a tattoo he drew up a version of it that worked and I've never regretted going with his suggestions since getting it. Even my conservative Portuguese grandmother, who despises most body art, had to admit it was gorgeous when she saw it. I haven't gone to the other artists who work there, but after poking around on their website I can at least say their work looks pretty incredible too. PT has a nice facility, ridiculously clean work spaces and a decent central location in the college hill area, so it's easy to get to. As far as money goes, for the quality of work you'll get Dennis will charge you a fair price and while there might be *cheaper* tattoo artists around consider this: if you can reasonably expect that your tattoo is going to last you the rest of your life, do you really want to pay less for it than you would for a handbag or a pair of sneakers? A tattoo should be considered an investment and I can promise you that taking your business to Providence Tattoo would be a worthwhile one. read more

After my third tattoo, I swore I would never get another tattoo again. But I really didn't like my third tattoo and desperately wanted to cover part of it up, so one beautiful day, I walked into Providence Tattoo and met Mariah. We set up an appointment for a cover up, I emailed her some images of really bright flowers that I wanted to use, and within the next few weeks I was sitting down for my first appointment. I have since been there for my second sitting and will be returning in February for my final sitting. I will most likely making another appointment to get a new tattoo at that time. Here is what I love about the shop: - Clean. - Nice, clean bathroom. - Good music (Band of Horses! Johnny Cash!). - Friendly artists. - CLEARLY within all the proper health requirements. - Comfortable, which is to say you don't feel like you are under harsh lighting in a surgical chair. Here is what I love about Mariah, and why you should go see her: - Friendly. - Funny. - Meticulous. When I got home from both sittings, my husband commented twice that she is clearly a perfectionist who really wants you to go home with a tattoo you love. I was thinking the very same thing, but to have someone else say it before I do proves she is amazing at this. - Flexible. I had to cancel appointment and she set me up with another one with no problem. She also let me take a break and squirm around a little bit when I was feeling uncomfortable from tattooing the ankle bone. - Fantastic artist. - Honest. She'll answer any questions you have honestly and she will address any concerns you have. Or if you just feel like talking about life, you can do that, too. I cannot recommend this shop enough. It's far superior than where I got my other tattoos. Assuming I get another tattoo, I will absolutely make an appointment here and ask for Mariah, although I'm sure the other artists would be just as awesome and personable. I don't have loyalties to particular shops/artists, in fact, I like the idea of representing different people's works. -- Currently, I am getting work done with Dennis M DelPrete, for a quarter sleeve on my left arm. I've been in for 3 of 4 sessions, and every time I'm thoroughly pleased! What an amazing artist! If you're looking for custom and unique work, definitely go in for a consult. I've looked at work from the other artist's books in the shop and am please with what I see from them as well. They take walk-ins, and the shop is very clean and organized. It's a little bit on the pricier side of shops I've been to, but the quality of work will far surpass you expectations. A must go in and check out! Note: There is only street parking. Steve just did fantastic work on a tat that I've been waiting years to get. 3.5hrs solid work. They helped me design it and bring it to life. Family & friends can't watch (except from behind the counter) or come with you, so best to be dropped off or come alone. However, very clean, helpful with comfort, friendly and pros. I am a vet and have tats from all over, providence tattoo did the best work. Popped in here for a small back piece, and I was happy to find they had availability for a walk-in. The first thing I noticed was the great flash on the walls. I've been in several tattoo shops, but few of them had the great quality flash that I saw here. In fact, if I hadn't already come with an idea in mind, I just might've picked something off of the wall. Everyone was super professional and friendly, a big departure from some of the "too cool" attitudes I've run into in a lot of other shops. My quote was pretty reasonable given the work involved, so no real complaints there. Andy had me fill out the paperwork, but when I came back a few hours later, he was busy and told me Peter would be inking my tattoo (not a big deal as I'd seen Peter do some great work when I first walked in). Peter was really cool helping me get all set up (I have long hair so it was a bit of a trial tying it up away from my neck but he helped me figure it out), and took pride in his work. He replaced the stencil several times until he was sure the symbol was perfectly straight before beginning, which I appreciated. As for the actual tattoo process, he was chill whenever I had to readjust or lift my head up for a break. If I'm ever back in Providence, I'll definitely come here for another tattoo! read more

I got a tattoo here last year. It was $250 for two small butterfly tattoos (size of quarters each). I'm saddened by it and it's honestly embarrassing. Idk kinda hard to get the color wrong when the color I wanted was right by where my tattoo is. Im going to have to get it redone. Very helpful and came up with a great design based off of my ideas. We did the piece in one sitting, but he was courteous to intermittently ask if I needed breaks. When we took a break between line work and shading he even went out of his way to the store next door and bought me a water and protein bar. Overall the piece came out great. Andy is a very talented artist, especially at the traditional style/lady heads. If I decide on another I will definitely come back and ask for Andy. Price is reasonable especially for the outcome, and they are very straight forward with pricing so you're not surprised at the end. Providence Tattoo has a really beautiful, cool, clean space on Wickenden. The artists do great work but I have gone into Providence Tattoo on multiple occasions for myself and with others and have experienced nothing but rudeness. If they don't completely ignore you when you walk in, they make you feel like you're bothering them if you inquire about tattoos. Every time I've been there, they have made me or whoever was going to get the tattoo feel inferior and frankly, stupid for asking questions. Again, they do great work and some of the artists are very nice but every time I've gone in there, one of the artists or staff have been incredibly rude. There are other studios around who do great work and make you feel totally comfortable when you're getting a piece done. read more

Mariah's attention to detail and level of skill really set her apart in my search, which led to me scheduling my first visit a year ago. Yesterday I got my fourth tattoo there, and it was as always, a great experience. Mariah is superb at what she does in taking your ideas and turning them into little dreams come true. While ultimately it's about how happy I am with my tattoo, and the experience, I am always pleased with the compliments I get on the work I've gotten done at Providence Tattoo by Mariah. The shop is very nicely kept, extremely cleanly, and the other staff and artists there are very kind, professional, and talented at what they do. Always a comfortable, welcoming atmosphere there. Peter gave me a real sweet tattoo on Saturday. It is a pretty big piece, stretching across the top of my thigh to tender inner leg. It felt as terrible as it is supposed to and Peter was kind and muppety. The lines are very precise, the colors vibrant, and he worked quickly. They were playing The Smiths the whole time which I hate more than foam soap and mosquitoes combined - but My Gother Half was tattooed by Peter right after I was and he enjoyed all of that somber garbage while he got more creepy pagan doodles on his arm. While waiting, I was able to talk an 18 year old out of getting a neck tattoo so she can save her bad decisions for dating drummers or wearing shoes without arch support. My husband and I stopped in here for a quick finger tattoo. The artist that worked on my husband was sweet, and most importantly did a good job....however, there was another guy on staff that day that was overwhelmingly obnoxious, and irritatingly distracting. He made insulting comments about the customers that came and went, and expressed verbal negativity about other personal acquaintances, places, music...the list goes on. He wouldn't shut up or stop talking shit. I was cringing by the time we finished the transaction. If only I heard what he had to say about my husband and I once the door closed behind us.... It's sad to say this. The other artist seemed friendly so I hate to give such a low rating...but with that said it was the hostile atmosphere created by the other staff I remember most distinctively. Not professional, not enjoyable, not cool. I suggest check out another shop, unless you don't mind being judged and persecuted after you drop your cash and walk out the door. p.s. the rest of the staff need to oust this dude. read more

My tattoo artist was originally Dennis, but due to a few changes in the design, he referred me to another artist in the shop, Rick. I was a little nervous, having not met the artist before, but I couldn't have been more happy! Rick is an incredibly patient, talented artist. Great conversationalist and very approachable. My design ended up taking much longer than we had expected, and Rick stayed two additional hours after close to finish it. It was my first tattoo, a sort of large thigh piece laden with stippling(One dot at a time). Rick had a steady hand and was awful patient with my constant fidgeting. I would highly recommend him to anyone looking to get a piece done. Amy, their front desk manager, along with Peter(a fellow artist in the shop), were both incredibly kind, interesting, and engaging. It was slushy and snowy and just an overall disgusting Saturday afternoon when I popped in Providence Tattoo. I have around 10-12 tattoos and have never walked into a shop without an appointment; not being prepared stresses me out, but I just decided to take a chance and stop by. I was greeted by two lovely gentlemen, Peter and Ricky. There was availability for a walk in and I got set up with Peter as my artist. He traced, tweaked, helped me play with sizing/placement, and around 20 minutes after I entered the shop, I was on the table. Peter did a wonderful job not only with the tattoo itself (which came out great) but his temperament was very calm and refreshing (couldn't be sweeter, and very easy to work with). Being on the table for the better part of two hours naturally I overheard conversations, and it was just nice to hear all the artists getting along and treating each other like a family- that's the kind of shop I want to work with. I have collected pieces from many different artists around New England, but I will most definitely come back to Providence Tattoo. They are a group of talented people who are extremely pleasant to be around. Sidebar: I think this would be a good shop for someone getting their first tattoo or someone who's very nervous about a specific area. PT is definitely the most calming shop I've been to, I mean as calming as a tattoo shop can be. This shop is awesome. Peter Toatley is awesome. I'm meticulous about things when it comes to cleaning, so I was impressed by the organization and cleanliness of this place. I walked in for the first time where Peter immediately greeted me, even though he was in the middle of consulting another customer. He listened to my tattoo idea and set me up for an appointment the very next day. Peter was very professional; he shook hands with me each time I came in and I appreciated his overall mannerisms.
