At first, it seems fine...but when the leasing agent isn't returning calls, says she had personal things to take care of so she can't return texts or emails, there's a red flag. I'm in need of housing, so I stick with it, hoping it will be easier once they (the office) knows I'm a good tenant. It takes 8 days for my application to be processed. Then I am asked to sign the lease sooner than I wanted to because she could not hold the apartment with my security deposit. I pay for two places for a month.
She up-sells me a bigger, "better" unit in a "more desirable" section of town. It's also the only disabled friendly unit, which I really need. That's on me, I chose. But it WASN'T a better, more desirable section of town, and she knew it. She said she used to live here too, and she never had a problem. Ah, but she doesn't live here now...
My car has been broken into twice, keyed once, and criminals have used the unsecured outside power plugs to power up RVs, generators, etc and have stolen the mechanics of the A/C units which are also unsecured. The higher "utilities" bills are sent on to the residents of the building. Yes, PMP. I had the xcel bills sent to me so I could see the meter readings and compared them. Nevertheless, I pay the bills. I just want to get through the end of the lease. There's rarely parking, and the lot is in such a state I've had to have tires plugged because of the rough conditions.
Immediately, they "lost" my move in sheet. I have photos, on a disc that I provided with it. They also don't have that. But the check that was attached to the move in sheet? That was cashed. They claim I didn't turn it in. I show the cashed check, finally they say they mean the check in sheet wasn't received. I can send them a copy, I made one when I moved in! Nope, that's not acceptable. I report all this to the Housing Authority.
There were repairs I asked for. They weren't done.
The a/c stops working. The water heater is leaking gas. The bottom shelf of the fridge is broken. The washer leaks. The showers aren't sealed. The door locks are constantly coming apart. The kitchen faucet leaks.
On 4th of July, I call the emergency line for the gas leak. PMP tried to tell me it's my fault. Unfortunately, I also took video where the repairmen clearly state the original heater was improperly installed. The repair guys do the job of replacing the water heater but they stain the carpet and gouge the wood in the water heater closet. I'm sure I will get a bill.
I go all summer with no A/C. I get fans. I seal the showers myself. I repair the kitchen faucet. I glue the fridge shelf until it will no longer handle the weight of the glue and completely shatters. Eventually, they respond to the Housing Authority. They order the wrong part and have to come out twice. The A/C unit still doesn't work, nor does the heater. I get a portable heater for my child's room and one for mine. I'm cold and we are sick all winter. We are cooking all the time to heat the common areas. Then, tragedy. The oven heating element burns out. It takes a week for a repair, and I'm given no warning prior to the repairmen coming in. Ironically, my kid's penny bank is empty after the oven gets repaired. But finally, it's warming up, so I should be ok, right?!?
I give notice (60 days?!?). I've signed a lease elsewhere. I filled out the application before I toured--I was notified of approval during the tour! I'm packing, there are boxes everywhere. The therapy animals are a bit out of sorts, as is my neurodisabled child.
PMP suddenly wants to show the unit with less than 24 hours notice. They send a TEXT to tell me, with less than 20 hours notice and less than 10 minutes to office closing time. When I call to explain that we have a therapy session and can not reschedule for less than one day's notice, I am yelled at by the same leasing agent who treated me dismissively 14 months ago. They tell me they don't have to give me notice at all. I tell them if they come during therapy I will report them. The leasing agent laughs at me. I ask to speak to her supervisor. Im on hold until 4:59. They're still coming at 2pm, I'm sure of it.
My advice? Don't rent from PMP. The people at the office will bully you. The receptionist will "lose" things. If you do, be wary. Get everything in writing. Always get a receipt for anything. Never use the drop box. Make copies of everything. Get renters insurance, you're going to need it. Use every resource you have with every public official you know. You're still going to lose your security deposit.
