Do not get laser hair removal here, it is both over priced and needlessly painful. Previously back home I was getting lasering on my face and neck for $40 per treatment. There was slight to no pain, it was over in 1-2 mins and any inflammation disappeared by the end of the day. It was gorgeous, clean, and knowledgeable while this looked like somewhere I'd get a regretful back tattoo. On the topic of tattoos, I have plenty, on my arms, back, collar bone, and not a single one of those compared to the pain I felt here. As a matter of fact even breaking my leg or toe and walking / running on them was more bearable than this. The only pain worse than this was when my appendix ruptured. Regardless I sucked it up, and dealt with the pain (and smell of my burned face which is a uniquely awful and disgusting smell btw). There was apparently no way to turn down the Candella settings or she simply didn't care. When I finished there was definitely a moment of shock on her face, perhaps at the fact that I looked like I'd had acid poured on my skin. She sprayed some sunscreen on (which burned and also not a single spray spf is FDA approved in the United States because they mostly don't offer full or completely needed spf coverage). I paid and was sent on my merry way. It cost $215.00 not including tip... $215.00 for the worst pain imaginable. The best part, is this is simply the precursor to the fact that now 5 days later my face is STILL erupting in red, swollen cystic acne and burns, with no signs of slowing down. I'm Asian, so I also know my skin if it does ever heal will be covered in dark marks / spots (post inflammatory hyper pigmentation) that I will then have to spend $100's-$1000's of dollars to get rid of either through more treatments OR topical products. Every other Derm and Esthi I have talked to / facetimed to show the now lunar landscape that is my face has an audible gasp and cringe. I used to have good skin, my job involves me being on camera, and now my face is so screwed up I have barely left my house in 5 days, and am embarrassed to be around any other human being. As someone who had previously gotten FIVE rounds of laser and never had a problem, this is a particularly awful experience, and now I am forced to deal with intense pain, and semi-permanent scarring. Do Not Get Laser here, I promise you the pain is not worth it, at all. PS: I'd just like to throw in stop trying to sell people the coffee scrub too, the claims made about it on the website aren't even scientifically or biologically possible... No activated charcoal does not "make your pores smaller" (that's actually physically impossible!) nor does it "suck out dirt or toxins" re: There is "little to no" evidence to substantiate the claims skincare companies are making, according to a July 2019 article by researchers at the University of Miami. Beyond that, they write, the use of activated charcoal in skincare products is unregulated. Because these products don't claim to treat or cure a diagnosable medical condition, the FDA isn't forced to regulate what goes in them or how else they advertise themselves. - https://www.sciencedirect.com/science/article/pii/S0738081X19301361 Further claiming it can help cellulite is also a BS claim, the only scientifically proven procedures involve lasers, liposuctions, or cryofreezing application. "No over-the-counter remedy has been shown to be effective in treating cellulite. That includes creams marketed to cure cellulite that have ingredients such as caffeine, antioxidants and herbal supplements," -- Dr. Dawn Davis, Dermatology, Mayo Clinic, Rochester, Minnesota Maybe I'm the idiot for not doing my due diligence, and reading reviews vs seeing a website chockfull of pseudo science, but either way I cannot express emphatically enough how horrible this experience has been. If you have scars (which if you go here you most likely will) a scrub wont fix your face, at least not the coffee scrub in a plastic bag. Alpha Hydroxy, Beta Hydroxy, or Poly Hydroxy acids, Vitamin C, or topical Retinoids are your best bet. read more

Absolutely Fantastic place! When you walk inside the cozy salon, you instantly feel like you are no longer in Ithaca but some swanky city. The decor is modern and adorable, the staff is super warm and friendly, and there are always some healthy snacks and tea/coffee. Rachel is the absolute best! She is friendly, does a great job, and makes you feel very comfortable. I have gone to other salons in other cities as well and Proper Puss is my favorite and a much needed addition in Ithaca. After reading the other reviews, I decided this was a place I could trust with my eyebrows. I have a hard time trusting anyone with my eyebrows. I tried to come in yesterday and relied on yelp's hours but when I got there they were closed. I called and left a message which was promptly returned this morning. I made an appointment and came in today. (Call to check hours and/or make appointment before going). The cushion on the bed was comfy memory foam material and made me feel relaxed. The procedure was different than I have ever experienced before. First my eyebrow hairs were trimmed. In the future I will ask for less trimming, I like a full figured eyebrow and don't want them to be too thinned out. Then came waxing. This was also done in a different way than I am used to, it wasn't bad, but it just wasn't expected this way. Some wax ended up on my upper cheek/corner of my eye far from my eyebrow and ended up being pulled up. Now I have a little red mark there (I usually get red after waxing, just not usually this far away from my eyebrow). This isn't a big deal, I just like to give full disclosure when yelping. Overall, I am satisfied with the outcome. It is a bit pricey $15 for eyebrows pre-tip. She does do some fun lotion application after which felt nice and relieving. I am a black woman and I scheduled an online appointment with Rachel for a Brazilian for today. However when I got there I believe I was treated in an extremely racist manner. When I first arrived, i was not sure who Rachel was as I met them outside with another lady while they were talking. I said hello, and they both looked at me but did not say A WORD back to me. I just stood there waiting as rachel cleaned her glass window outside and finished her conversation with the other lady. When she was done she didn't even greet me in any way and just stated while walking away from me and into the building " I cannot do anything for you now you're late". My appointment was for 9am but I got there at 9:07 because it is at Collegetown and I was trying to find parking. I walk in and the second thing she tells me is that she can no longer do the services I initially selected because I came in a couple minutes late which I understood and said okay she can just do what she can. At that point I was caught off-guard by her behavior so I just fell silent immediately. We walked into the room at the back and she asked Me to put my things down blah blah which I began doing. She then proceeded to ask me "are you okay?" in a very condescending tone. I was shocked so I said yes I am why are you asking me that? She then told me that she did not like my attitude because it is off and she feels as though I am being defensive. I told her that I'm just confused as to why she's asking me if I am okay. She then asked if she has ever worked with me before and I said no, to which she then proceeded to ask me to leave her shop because she did not like my attitude. I barely spoke 10 words to Rachel, a person that I am meeting for the first time ever. I also believe I did not act in anyway that seemed defensive or disrespectful towards them as a service vendor. as I got back to my car I sent them a message to let them know that what transpired between us was extremely hurtful and unacceptable, and that I felt racially profiled. She still has not responded to me. overall, I will not be going here again, because Rachel is a racist :), and her calling me defensive and saying I have an attitude as a black woman is also a micro aggression. read more

Heads up: This place offers customers a 15% discount on their next appointment if they write a glowing review for Proper Puss. When a business has to bribe its customers in order to get good reviews on Yelp, that says a lot. I have never encountered an esthetician who acted so rude during an appointment. "How are you?" Rachel asked during my appointment. When I started to answer "I'm good, thanks-" she snapped at me "I wasn't TALKING to you. I was talking to HIM," referring to a maintenance guy who was walking by. She didn't utter a word to me for the rest of my appointment. I don't understand why someone would be so rude to a customer, particularly a new one that, presumably, they would want to keep. When I looked at my eyebrows for a few seconds in the mirror after she was done, just to double check that they were even, she seemed very irritated and rushed me out. This place always has an appointment available on short notice, but they don't use hard wax and still use strips for Brazilians. They use hard wax for the inner area but not outer. Parking is kind of annoying since it's Collegetown but I usually just park in the 20 min loading zone since it's fast. read more

Love this place! I usually go for a brazilian and Rachel is strictly business. She's also occasionally chatty which is fun and a nice distraction during the painful parts (which is all of it). One thing I will say, is if you want someone to do the whole dance of covering up 90% of your lady bits with a towel while they wax each 10% area, this is not that place. If you've never had a wax before just be forewarned that there are times where you're just spread eagle and Rachel is just fine with that. She'll never make you feel uncomfortable and she's quick. I only write this because I recommended this place before to someone and it just surprised her. There are so many things to like about this place. 1) Great hygiene: This place always sticks to its no double dipping policy. They change the towels after each customer. When getting a Brazilian in Ithaca you basically have two choices: Rasa Spa and Proper Puss. My friend went to Rasa Spa earlier this week. Yeah, they had great robes and free tea, but the service was awful. It was rushed, they did not leave enough time for the appointment, and her Brazilian was not done well at all. Hearing this, I decided to go to Rachael at Proper Puss. This woman can do her job like no one else can. If you're about to throw down $50 for a service, go to someone who will spend the time to do it right. Rachael not only can do an amazing Brazilian but she's also a licensed Esthetician so she knows everything about how your skin works/how to keep it healthy. She also owns her business, so it's in her best interest to make sure she keeps her customers happy. Proper Puss is awesome. Hands down the best waxing service in Ithaca. TLDR; I had extremely high expectations for Proper Puss. After a couple of poor eyebrow threading experiences in Ithaca, and after reading and hearing such great reviews about Proper Puss, I decided to try out their services. However, after multiple phone calls and visiting the business twice - once for a scheduled appointment - with no one there, I am extremely disappointed with the service and professionalism. I reached out in advance of my event and was not responded to until 4 days later. I even went in for a scheduled appointment, and no one was there. Maybe someday in the future I will be back to try and actually get my eyebrows waxed, but I am very hesitant to recommend the business to anyone else. My review speaks only to the professionalism of the business, as I have not yet been able to purchase a service. I am very disappointed and frustrated with the professionalism of Proper Puss. I had a formal event on a Saturday for which I was hoping to get an eyebrow wax. I requested an appointment on Yelp on that Monday but was told that I would actually have to call in to book an appointment. If you are not going to allow for booking of appointments through Yelp, I do not think it is a feature that you should purport to offer. Anyway, I called, and there was no answer. I even went in on Monday afternoon to see if I might be able to get the wax done as a walk-in. I believe the employee was with a client, but I was not greeted at all in the 15 minutes that I waited there. I eventually just left because I wasn't able to wait any longer. I called again on Tuesday with no answer. I called again on Wednesday and decided to leave a voicemail requesting an appointment. Eventually, I received a call on Thursday and was able to set up an appointment for Friday at 11AM. On Thursday evening, I received a call providing that Proper Puss might not be open on Friday due to inclement weather but that an employee would be there Thursday until about 9PM. Knowing that Proper Puss isn't open on Saturday and not wanting to chance closure on Friday, I asked if I could come in that night around 8:15PM. The employee provided that that would be okay, although she might possibly be leaving early. I rushed to get ready and received a call about 10 minutes later saying that she was going to leave for the night around 7:40PM and that she would definitely be in for my scheduled appointment on Friday at 11AM. I knew that there was the possibility that she would be leaving early so that was fine. Knowing that there was an inclement weather forecast, I called an hour before my appointment on Friday to confirm that they were still open. There was no answer, but I just assumed she might be with a client and did not want to miss my appointment if that were the case. I went in for my appointment at 11AM, walking 10-15 minutes in inclement weather, to find out that Proper Puss was closed. I waited 5-10 minutes, and no one showed up. Although I am aware that inclement weather can throw a wrench into plans, I feel as though the business should not have told me to come in for my appointment the night before. If they felt that that morning it would be too difficult to come in, they should call their clients and cancel appointments so that they are not traveling 20-30 minutes walking in that weather. read more

Proper Puss Ithaca is a great waxing and laser salon. I've gone there for both services, and Drea always does a wonderful job. The front area is small, but really, they don't seem to need it; they get you in and going pretty quickly! The only time I've had to wait was when I was early and the customer ahead of me was still paying. Very clean and nicely decorated space, and the website really makes it easy to schedule an appointment. Also all the products they use (like makeup remover on face prior to laser) smells great and is nice and mild. Finally, I just can't say enough about Drea. There are salons that are very bare-bones and a bit sanitarium like in terms of decor when you come for a wax. Then there are salons that have great interiors and make you feel like you're in someone's house. Proper Puss falls into the latter, and I could not be any happier with the service I received. I made an appointment with Rachael and the wax she used was great-- no inflammations, nothing painful. This was the first time my underarms felt totally relaxed instead of that post-grinder feeling with some places when they just rip the wax with "gusto." The one tiny downside is that the price is a tad steep for me, but it's a great place if I feel like getting a diva treatment or just want to stay close to campus without having to head to the mall to get my waxing done. read more

I got my first Brazilian here and will not be returning especially after subsequent (and vastly superior) Brazilians at other locations. I'm reviewing Proper Puss two years after my appointment with them (I still live in the area). She was very nice and professional on the phone explaining how I should prepare for my appointment (I was very nervous). Unfortunately when my appointment began she started immediately telling me what a terrible candidate I was for the treatment. I am fair skinned and a red head so my skin is more sensitive and my hair is less receptive to treatment. Regardless, it was not a good start to the appointment. Throughout the session as I broke into a full on cold sweat she refused to pause and eventually she said "You think it's bad for you? Imagine what it's like for me." Two years later I am still shocked that she said that, maybe she was trying to crack a joke, but it fell very short. Afterwards I was satisfied with the results of my appointment, but her comment still rankled. Given the pricing and service I decided to that it would be in my best interest to shop around for my next Brazilian. I tipped, not because of the service, but because I didn't want her to go home complaining about another student who doesn't tip. read more

This was my first Brazilian, and after reading so many positive reviews of Rachel, I guess I went into the experience with my expectations way too high. For a service that is so personal and puts the customer in such a vulnerable position, you would think that she would make an extra effort to be personable and friendly but I found her to be rude. When I asked her a question during the process, she just shushed me and told me to breathe deep. And when I tried to make small talk, she was really cold and distant. And when she had finished, she just kinda walked off to take care of another customer, and I didn't know if she was done or not. As for the technical aspects, she was really fast and efficient. I've had brazilians by Rachel twice, and she is good at waxing, but trashy in customer service. She happened to recognize me from a wedding a few years back we'd both attended and proceeded to ask some really inappropriate questions about my ex boyfriend. She also reeked like Marijuana. Well to tell my story..... I made an appointment to have a brazilian and my back waxed on November 26 at noon. I arrived about a half hour early and waited but was becoming concerned when I was told that Rachel (the owner) wasn't there yet and that she hadn't returned any phone calls. I waited until 1:30 when she finally called to say that she wasn't coming in. The girl that was there (I can't remember her name) told me that she could do my back but not the brazilian. I decided to get my back done while I was there. Now she did a very nice job, I'm not going to knock that. My beef is that Rachel blew off the appointment and me. The girl said she would have her call me to reschedule on Monday afternoon since I needed a very early appointment on the following Saturday. No call on Monday and I called at 7:45 and left a message on her answering machine to call me Tuesday. I waited until 4:30pm Tuesday and called this time leaving a message with a human to have Rachel call me because she was with another client. I waited until 7:00pm and still no call. I tried calling one last time and was told that she had left for the night. I have been getting waxed for a long time and this is the first time that this has happened to me. Must be my money is less green and valuable than other peoples. I have since made an appointment somewhere else to get it done. I used to be a sales and marketing person and this type of treatment especially by a business owner is horrible. If she didn't want to do it, then she shouldn't advertize that she does. I have been searching for someplace new to have my waxing done at since the place I was having it done at raised their prices and doesn't do brazilian waxing. I thought this was the place, I guess that if Rachel would want any of my future business, then she would have to really convince me that this was an isolated incident and won't happen again. I went in for a brazilian and I must say that Rachel did an amazing job removing all of the hairs on the front side. I have never had a brazilian where I didn't have to go home and pluck a few strays afterward. However, there were a few patches of hair left behind in the back that I will have to take care of on my own. My biggest problem with my trip to this salon is that I asked very nicely for Rachel to not use any oils afterwards because I tend to break out. She told me that her products were top of the line and that nobody had ever had a problem with that before. She told me that unless I actually had an allergy she had to use her lotions and oils on me. I decided maybe she knew what she was talking about and let her use the stuff even though I really didn't want it because I know how my skin behaves. Sure enough, when I woke up the next day, I had tiny pimples all over the area. This really bothers me because even though I asked her not to use the products containing oil she told me that she had to (and talked down to me while saying it) and did it anyway. read more

Waxing is the only service that I'd rather get done in Ithaca than NYC because of this salon, which obviously says a lot. The interior is very cute and makes me feel really comfortable, unlike other salons that look like free clinics inside. Rachel is also a fantastic waxer who makes waxing as quick and painless as possible. My first time getting a brazilian wax was at Proper Puss, and she talked to me a lot to distract me from the sting. It worked. She already feels like your girl friend after one session! This was my first Brazilian, so I did tons of research beforehand to find the best Ithaca area salon for the job. Proper Puss seemed pretty pricey, but their yelp reviews were so unanimously stellar that I figured it must be worth the cost. Boy was I wrong. This was the most unpleasant salon experience I've ever had. 5 minutes before my appointment, I received a call from them saying that Rachael was running late and would be about 10 minutes behind. I waited in the front room for about 15 minutes before Rachael came in from her car. I received no apology for the wait, and she was impatient and annoyed as I settled into the room. This attitude continued during the wax, during which she would sigh and roll her eyes if I placed my leg improperly or didn't immediately understand what she asked. It was so tense and uncomfortable that I could not wait to get out of there. As I paid and left, I was told that if I left a review in yelp I would receive 15% off my next visit. Well, there will not be a next visit for me, but now I know why these other review are so positive.Save your money and get better service elsewhere. read more

Well, everyone else seems to love Proper Puss. I'll try to make this balanced, but I do have a gripe. Pros: it's clean, comfortable, and well-decorated. And the owner/operator is very nice and personable. However, I've been twice now, and it seems like she just can't get me out of there fast enough. I get a Brazilian, but I like to keep a fair amount of hair (maybe a big triangle?). She has never really asked me anything about how I like it to look - just started waxing like a madman! The first time, I got this tiny little strip - which may be all the rage for 18 year olds, but not for me. Ok, so I didn't specify... maybe my fault. Second time, I did say I wanted a triangle, and I got this tiny little triangle that looks kinda stupid. It sucks to go out and night and think 'man, I hope I don't meet some hot guy, because I'm embarrassed to take my pants off for the next month' - ahhhh... all that and $50?? Seriously, it's not cheap - and I think the difference between 15 minutes (how long it took today) and 17 minutes (the extra amount of time it would take her to ask me how I liked it groomed) really would make a big difference. At the end of the day, I'm not going to a waxing place for decor and tea. I'm going because I want my vajajay to look good! That said, I think it's probably the best place in Ithaca, so I don't want this to sound too negative... maybe just be really clear what you want ahead of time. read more

This was my first time visiting the salon and while making small talk I mentioned to the esthetician that I was from South America. She went on to describe a bad experience she had had with a client from Brazil. She got progressively more sullen as she shared the account and it felt like her waxing style got increasingly more aggressive as the story progressed. Never in my life have I experienced something like this. I told her that the wax was too hot and she just kept working and was very impatient. I had overheard her exchanges with the previous client and she was warm and friendly and I was so happy to have found what appeared to be a very nice place with a nice atmosphere. It was not a very good experience and given the content of what she was saying about this person from Brazil, and being that I am from South America, it seemed borderline racist, I would not recommend it. read more

A Brazilian wax from here is absolutely fine. I got my first Brazilian wax here. Pros -Rachel is really fast and fairly nice. The receptionist was also fairly nice. Cons -The space where you are actually waxed is open at the top (it's not actual closed off room). I didn't have a bad experience, my experience was completely OK. I loved proper puss. I enjoyed girl chatting with Rachel and she was so cool. Talking about boys and jealous girls was fun. I always tipped well ($20) per brazilian because I felt that a job so well done should be compensated. Unfortunately, today I decided I will never return to proper puss ever again. I made an appointment mistake and booked my appointment one week off. I came into the salon and had it changed for the right day, or so I thought. Rachel has new assistants and apparently they're totally clueless. So on a whim, the day of said appointment I called to confirm the appointment and was told that I had actually made it for March. WHY would i make a waxing appointment one month in advance, I have no clue what my hair growth will be then. Rachel goes on to say I can come in at 1:45, I say okay that works, and then she yells Hellooo I have someone on the other line... I AM SORRY YOUR ASSISTANT IS DUMB, if you have someone on the other line, just tell me to hold. I tell her that 1:45 is okay and she hangs up! I thought she was just busy, but so am I so just in case so I am not missing a class for no reason, I call back and ask if it is still okay to come in at 1:45. The confused and clueless receptionist hands the phone to rachel who asks me "ARE YOU ON DRUGS?". Dear Rachel, I am not on drugs but you certainly are if you think its ever okay to talk to a customer like that. no wax could ever be good to make me come back. that was so rude and shows how little you care about your customers.
